On Mon, Nov 27 at 6:30pm, The Lemonade Stand Gallery and Letty Nowak host an Artist Talk with a selection of artists from the "SMALL WORKS"
currently on view. Lauren McAloon, AD Tinkham, Cheryl Wilson-Smith and Elizabeth Chamberlain join Nowak in a panel discussion about their Small Works entries, and will be available to answer questions from the audience after the talk.
The Small Works Exhibit remains on view through November 30th in the Sanger Gallery. Stop in during the Artist Talk, or during The Studios' normal gallery hours, Tues-Sat, 10am-4pm, to enjoy the 186 pieces that were juried in, and to view the Judges' Choice Award Winners.

Specific Key West/South Florida sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt - the 54 ½ -ton, handmade tapestry that stands as a memorial to more than 96,000 individuals lost to AIDS -- will be presented for display on World AIDS Day, December 1st, in a cooperative between AIDS Help, The Custom House and the Key West AIDS Memorial.
The date coincides with the annual candlelight procession and reading of names at the Key West AIDS Memorial, located at 1100 White Street (the Edward B. Knight Pier), and all participants are encouraged to continue their remembrance at The Custom House, 281 Front Street, which will host the Quilt panels through December 4th.
"I can't think of a better way to continue the remembrance than on our own 20th anniversary and the Quilt's 30th anniversary," says Jeffrey Smead, Treasurer for the Key West AIDS Memorial. "The Memorial was and is the only official municipal AIDS Memorial in the world, built with private funds and donated to the city in 1997 (and included 730 names). The NAMES Project Foundation -- the caretaker of The Quilt -- has offered a portable contact since 1987 that a fixed marker cannot. th, the community will gather back at Bayview Park for the Lighting of the Menorah at 5:30. Rabbi Shimon Dudai from Congregation B'Nai Zion and Rabbi Jacob Zucker from Chabad of the Florida Keys will say the blessings.

Then there is new work from your favorites such as David Scott Meier, Deborah Moore, Deb Kik and Susann D'Antonio, new jewelry from Lois Songer and Lainie Davia and plenty of fun ceramics from Sandy Sun.
Finally, have a sneak peek at Fran Decker's new series of broken shell paintings, "This Once Was Home." This series was inspired by Hurricane Katrina and was ironically completed just days before Irma came and destroyed so many homes here in Monroe County.

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN
Who can be a mentor? "Mentors are not tutors or counselors. Mentors are caring, compassionate adults who volunteer their time to guide, support, and encourage our Take Stock scholars. It only takes 45 minutes a week during the school year," Chuck Licis explained. "Our mentors are screened and trained before being paired with a student, and we have college success coaches in each area to assist and support our mentors and students."
Take Stock students are given the 'chance of a lifetime' with mentoring in middle and high school followed by the scholarship that pays for four years college tuition and fees. A student is waiting for his or her chance of a lifetime, a college scholarship, but we need your help to make the dream a reality! The much-anticipated Key West Artisan Market kicked off a new season a few weeks ago; and will take place every three weeks through season at the Restaurant Store.
The event gives residents and visitors alike a chance to shop fresh and local. The parking lot at 1111 Eaton is transformed into a showcase of art, photography, jewelry and unique local handicrafts made exclusively in the Keys. There is eclectic entertainment, local author book signings, demonstrations and sampling. This year we will feature produce from Grimal Grove
.
Guests can taste and buy local specialties including fresh Cole's Peace bakery items, key west pink shrimp, smoked meats, cheeses, wine, honey, salt and spices, pasta, pickles, bacon jam and other culinary delights. Concessions, wine and a broad craft beer selection are onsite. This week's celebrity bartender is Angie Romo.
The Key West Artisan Market is a proud supporter of the City of Key West's Preserve Island Life Campaign. This initiative is about promoting the little things we can do to increase our community sustainability and resilience. The Market works in partnership with the Green Coordinators to offer fun, weekly themes that reinforce these efforts by offering resources and education to our guests.
Guests are encouraged to ride bikes or the bus which conveniently stops in front of the Restaurant Store. Strunk Ace Hardware will be open for business and parking restricted to customers and disable tagged vehicles. Parking is available in the Old Town Parking Garage at 300 Grinnell Street. CFFK awarded
nearly half a million dollars to continue to assist with relief efforts following Hurricane Irma. To date, almost
$620,000 from the
Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund and the
Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund for the Upper Keys has been distributed to support much-needed relief for individuals from Key West to Key Largo.

$480,650 in new grants supports 35 nonprof
its from throughout the Keys
providing direct assistance to foster children, families, students and teachers, police officers, commercial fishers, tourism industry employees and other individuals.
The grants provide temporary housing, rent, mortgage and utilities assistance, food, clothing, medical care, counseling and more. Grants are being presented in Key West, Marathon and Islamorada.

Back in Time Fundraiser November 29
As the Florida Keys continue to recover from the impact of Hurricane Irma, Key West's 126-year-old Custom House hosts their annual "Back In Time" fundraiser on Wednesday, November 29 from 5:00pm - 10:00pm, an event that will support the building's ongoing preservation needs and address current disrepair, raise funds to help support Habitat for Humanity's hurricane-recovery efforts, and toast Scotti Merrill Preservation Award recipient Tom Hambright, one of the best historians and collection-keepers of Key West history.
The second annual "Back In Time" fundraiser is an opportunity for The Society to raise much-needed capital to support their preservation mission. When The Society became stewards of the county-owned building in 1991, it was in near-derelict condition, boarded up and left to sit untouched in the salt air and sun for over two decades. Original leadership spearheaded an ambitious 9-year, 9 million-dollar renovation with the generous support of the community and the late Scotti Merrill. The current Society team continues with the steady efforts and dedication necessary to maintain and preserve the building many consider "Key West's architectural crown jewel."
Last year's inaugural event raised $120,000, monies that will help overhaul the building's failing climate control system, "essential to preserving both the building and the collection," says Executive Director Michael Gieda. They hope this year's event will help raise a portion of the remaining $300,000 needed to complete the repairs. It's time to deck the halls, but it's also a season where fire can be a threat Key West Fire Chief Michael Davila wants to remind the community to be alert for possible fire hazards that can sneak into our homes over the holidays. Space heaters, candles and dry Christmas trees are just some of the potentially dangerous additions to our homes this time of year.
Each year, lives are lost and homes destroyed because of unsafe use of heaters. The following are some tips to ensure you don't become a statistic:
- Never use ovens, ranges or grills as heating devices
- Install carbon monoxide detectors
- Keep all heating devices at least 36 inches away from other objects, including walls and furniture
- Never use an extension cord with a space heater, and never leave it unattended
- Keep candles at least one foot away from anything flammable and never leave one unattended
- Be sure your smoke alarm is tested monthly
- Use an artificial tree, or be sure your real one is fresh and keep it watered
- Use safe lights, check cords for wear, and don't use more than three strands on one extension cord
- Keep candles a long, safe distance from the tree
- Do not allow children to handle the lights
- Never use indoor extension cords out of doors
- Unplug the lights before changing bulbs
Finally, even cooking can be hazardous if we don't follow a few simple steps:
- Do not leave a stove unattended
- Keep saucepan handles turned away from the front of the stove so that children cannot pull them down
- If you deep fry a turkey, be extra careful; do not use the deep fryer under a deck and be sure to keep children away from that vat of hot oil. This is a potential dangerous means of cooking, so be fully aware of the hazards before you start.

On the last official days of the 2017 hurricane season (November 30 and December 1) the crew at COAST - the Stock Island based artist and craftsman collective - has organized a two-day benefit concert festival, aptly named "Coast Is Clear", with the goal of raising money and spirits for the Florida Keys community in the wake of hurricane Irma.
To date, the lineup includes national touring artists G. Love, Langhorne Slim, Rayland Baxter and Rorey Carroll - all of whom play to large crowds from coast to coast and at huge festivals like Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza and Monterrey Pop. In addition, local favorites Patrick and The Swayzees and The Skank - among others - will add local flavor to the stages over the two-day event.
The current schedule calls for the Thursday (11/30) performances to take place in the Bahama Village neighborhood with events shifting between Blue Heaven, Green Parrot and The COAST Outpost (803 Whitehead Street). While Friday (12/1) shows will take place on Stock Island at Hogfish and COAST - both located on Front Street.
Says COAST founder Billy Kearins, "We were amazed at how well the community came together after the storm hit and it inspired us to try to create something positive and uplifting in the wake of such devastation. Our concerts have always been a great way for locals to come together for a night, so we figured, let's do that again, while at the same time using the event as a way to raise money for those hit hardest by the storm."
He then added, "So, I got in touch with some friends who play music for a living and was pretty amazed that they all said, 'yeah, we'd love to come down.'"

Don't know if you are aware, but our Post sustained major damage from IRMA and will be closed for the foreseeable future. We are currently doing the "insurance and contractor dance" and have begun soliciting support to help offset the expenses of both repairs and paying all our reoccurring monthly expenses without the benefit of income.

Since we had a lot of blue on the building to begin with, the tarps on there now kind of blend in and haven't been noticed by many in the community. I have attached a couple pictures to illustrate the damage. We were hoping that some of your many followers might be inclined to help us out.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is remembering this week Two Officers who died in the line of duty.
(L) Sheriff's Deputy Nick Pham was killed in the line of duty in a traffic accident. Deputy Pham was working traffic patrol for the Sheriff's Traffic Enforcement Unit when his patrol car collided with a semi-tractor trailer truck at the 62 mile marker of highway U.S. One at 12:20 p.m.
(R) Remembering fallen officer: David Cormier - killed November 19
th, 1989
David J. Cormier, 31 years old, was a reserve deputy for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office when he died November 19, 1989, from injuries he received when the patrol car he was riding in collided with a pick-up truck.
The collision occurred about 10:55 p.m., on U.S. Highway 1 on Plantation Key at Mile Marker 87.5. Deputy Joseph Ferraro and Reserve Deputy Cormier were responding to a back-up call from another deputy. Patrick Walter from Davie, Florida, had just left the parking lot of the Islamorada Inn in his 1973 Chevrolet pick-up truck when, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, he "failed to yield the right of way" to the patrol car, which had blue and red lights flashing.
Deputy Ferraro swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid the accident, but collided with the left side of the pick-up truck. Deputy Ferraro sustained head and neck injuries and was transported to Baptist Hospital and made a full recovery. Patrick Walter died at the scene of the accident and Reserve Deputy Cormier was stabilized at Mariners Hospital before being airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where he died during surgery at 2:30 a.m. the following morning.
Reserve Deputy Cormier was the third deputy to be killed in the line of duty in Monroe County. Cormier was an official with TIB Bank of the Keys, participated in civic projects and volunteered at many community events. He was an active member of the Upper Keys Jaycees. He also volunteered to set up a computer system for the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce. Reserve Deputy David Cormier graduated from the Reserve Deputy Academy in June, 1989, and is survived by his parents, Curtis and Lilian; and his sister, Andrea.

Sponsoring The Quilt's appearance, explained Scott Pridgen, Executive Director of AIDS Help, was the idea of the Agency's Consumer Advisory Committee (comprised of clients and non-clients), always innovating methods to reinforce the Mission, and historical significance, of the Agency.
"The idea arose months ago from several members and since, Michael Seth Young and Chuck Brown have been busily assembling volunteers and docents to explain and answer questions about the Quilt, which began in San Francisco with a single 3 x 6 foot panel. It now includes more than 49,000 panels from every state in the nation," recounted Pridgen, "hand-crafted by friends, lovers and family members."
Sections are continuously on display across the country in schools, places of worship, community centers, businesses, corporations and a variety of other institutional settings all in the hope of making the realities of HIV and AIDS real, human and immediate. To date, more than18 million people have seen The AIDS Memorial Quilt at tens of thousands of display throughout the world.
"It's still a disease that has no cure," commented Pridgen. "The Quilt humanizes the statistics. It defines compassion...triumph over taboo...shedding of stigma...and inspiration for individuals to take responsibility for their own wellness. By incorporating Key West's permanent tribute with the Quilt panels at the beautiful Custom House, under the watchful eye of Key West Art & Historical Society Curator Cori Convertito, we offer an emotional 2017 outreach to our community on December 1st."
The evening's 'umbrella' thematic, the Tree of Hope, from 7-9 p.m., will offer appetizers and live entertainment, and notepaper will be provided for attendees to personally inscribe a memory or wish for their chosen placement on a Christmas tree, this year donated by MARC House.
The tree is subsequently relocated for lobby display through the New Year to the main offices of AIDS Help, 1434 Kennedy Drive.
AIDS Help has allocated the suggested entry donation of $25, which includes a first drink and a keepsake ornament, to the Friends of the AIDS Memorial, Inc. for its annual upkeep and refurbishment.
