As November winds down and Thanksgiving approaches, the city's Community Services Department is putting the finishing touches on the holiday season.
The festivities kick off with the tree lighting ceremony in Bayview Park on Monday, November 27
th at 6 p.m. This family favorite this year features the Horace O'Bryant Middle School band. The city's elves have been busy creating a little North Pole magic right here in Key West and by sprucing up Bayview Park after Hurricane Irma tore it up. The Community Services department is staging Santa's workshop and sleigh to surround the 25-foot high tree.
On Saturday, December 2
nd, the other family favorite -- the Holiday Parade -- gets underway starting at 7 p.m. Floats and participants will line up on Virginia Street and White. The parade will follow its usual route down Truman Avenue to Duval Street where the judges will view each entry.
On Thursday, December 14
th, the community will gather back at Bayview Park for the Lighting of the Menorah at 5:30. Rabbi Shimon Dudai from Congregation B'Nai Zion and Rabbi Jacob Zucker from Chabad of the Florida Keys will say the blessings.
The City of Key West offices will be closed Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Normal business hours will resume on Monday, November 27
There will be no bus service on Thursday, November 23
rd. This long-standing tradition allows our drivers to spend Thanksgiving with their families. Normal bus service will resume on Friday, November 24
th.

Celebrate the oncoming holidays while supporting island artisans and
free public Montessori education in Key West
during the May Sands Montessori's Holiday Bazaar on Friday, December 1 from 4:00pm to 9:00pm at First Flight Restaurant & Brewery, located at 301 Whitehead St. The free event will feature Key West's finest artisans, festive music, and delectable desserts and drinks to help invoke the spirit of the season.
The First Flight garden will be transformed into a winter wonderland with "snow" and the festive sounds of DJ Chaka, where children and adults can delight in a hot chocolate bar (spiked if desired for adults) and baked goods with all proceeds to benefit May Sands Montessori. Santa and his elves will be on hand for holiday requests and $5 digital photos. Artisans and vendors include chef and health coach Layla Barr and her delectable baked goods, musician and author Bucky Montgomory with his books and CDs, Costume-designer and May Sands Montessori educator Chrissy Clapp and her hand-made mermaid stockings, and a wide array of other creatives with their specialty gift items and offerings.

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN
Chuck Licis sends regards : Are you ready to make a difference? Take Stock in Children, the flagship college scholarship program of the Monroe County Education Foundation, is ready to welcome a
record.

"We have a fantastic group of 77 qualified candidates who are ready to join Take Stock in Children and work towards achieving their goal of a college education. However, if we do not have a volunteer mentor to match with the student, we cannot accept the student into our program," said MCEF president Bryan Green.
Take Stock needs a minimum of 50 new mentors in the Lower Keys, 15 in Marathon, and 15 in the Upper Keys to pair with incoming Take Stock scholars.
"While our mission is to accept all students who meet the academic and economic eligibility requirements, and who have the desire, motivation, and potential to go to college," program coordinator Chuck Licis explained, "we can't bring them into the program without a mentor match."
Who can be a mentor? "Mentors are not tutors or counselors. Mentors are caring, compassionate adults who volunteer their time to guide, support, and encourage our Take Stock scholars. It only takes 45 minutes a week during the school year," Licis explained. "Our mentors are screened and trained before being paired with a student, and we have college success coaches in each area to assist and support our mentors and students."
Take Stock students are given the 'chance of a lifetime' with mentoring in middle and high school followed by the scholarship that pays for four years college tuition and fees. A student is waiting for his or her chance of a lifetime, a college scholarship, but we need your help to make the dream a reality! The much-anticipated Key West Artisan Market kicked off a new season a few weeks ago; and will take place every three weeks through season at the Restaurant Store.
The event gives residents and visitors alike a chance to shop fresh and local. The parking lot at 1111 Eaton is transformed into a showcase of art, photography, jewelry and unique local handicrafts made exclusively in the Keys. There is eclectic entertainment, local author book signings, demonstrations and sampling. This year we will feature produce from Grimal Grove

Guests can taste and buy local specialties including fresh Cole's Peace bakery items, key west pink shrimp, smoked meats, cheeses, wine, honey, salt and spices, pasta, pickles, bacon jam and other culinary delights. Concessions, wine and a broad craft beer selection are onsite. This week's celebrity bartender is Angie Romo.
The Key West Artisan Market is a proud supporter of the City of Key West's Preserve Island Life Campaign. This initiative is about promoting the little things we can do to increase our community sustainability and resilience. The Market works in partnership with the Green Coordinators to offer fun, weekly themes that reinforce these efforts by offering resources and education to our guests.
Guests are encouraged to ride bikes or the bus which conveniently stops in front of the Restaurant Store. Strunk Ace Hardware will be open for business and parking restricted to customers and disable tagged vehicles. Parking is available in the Old Town Parking Garage at 300 Grinnell Street. 2018 McKEE FINE ART AUCTION ANNOUNCED - Save the Date

The auction will again take place at The Studios of Key West. nearly half a million dollars to continue to assist with relief efforts following Hurricane Irma. To date, almost
$620,000 from the
Florida Keys Emergency Relief Fund and the
Landau Family Hurricane Relief Fund for the Upper Keys has been distributed to support much-needed relief for individuals from Key West to Key Largo.

The grants provide temporary housing, rent, mortgage and utilities assistance, food, clothing, medical care, counseling and more. Grants are being presented in Key West, Marathon and Islamorada.

Key West Art & Historical Society and Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit keep the legacy alive
After a year of meetings between their respective boards, the Tennessee Williams Key West Exhibit, its board, and membership will merge with Key West Art & Historical Society, making the Exhibit The Society's fourth museum, and uniting the two organizations and their growing memberships of passionate Key West arts and history supporters.
"Since working with The Society in 2011 to launch the first Tennessee Williams birthday celebration and with the continued growth and expansion of the Exhibit, our board of directors thought that a merger with a larger, established non-profit was the next logical step," says Tennessee Williams Exhibit founder and curator Dennis Beaver.
Beaver moved to Key West in 1979, when Tennessee Williams was a prominent figure not only on the island, but all over the world. After Williams' death in 1983, Beaver decided to help bring more recognition to the iconic writer who had lived on the island for thirty-four years. With the help of The Society in 2011, Beaver organized a successful 100
th anniversary birthday celebration.
"This success gave me the initiative to start collecting Williams memorabilia and to start showing them in a small space on Truman Avenue," says Beaver.
The exhibit has grown to become a destination for Tennessee Williams enthusiasts and scholars as well as an incorporated organization with many supporting members, offering a full roster of writing and painting contests, film forums and the annual Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration. The preserved and showcased collection of historic, archival materials helps keep alive the importance of Williams' literary legacy and offers the largest collection of Tennessee Williams memorabilia and literary artifacts available to the public. Displays include artist Jane Rohrschneider's recently completed model of the playwright's former home at 1431 Duncan Street where he lived from 1949 until his death in 1983, first edition plays and books, images from the late local photographer Don Pinder, and original steps from the film adaptation of Williams' play "The Rose Tattoo" which was filmed entirely in Key West.
"We are fortunate that Dennis has already done such a wonderful job in telling this important history," says Key West Art & Historical Society Executive Director Michael Gieda. "As an organization whose mission is to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the Florida Keys, The Society is honored to continue Dennis' work in promoting Williams' legacy."
The Society currently complements the Tennessee Williams Exhibit with a display of Williams' paintings at the Custom House Museum. The Truman Avenue exhibit - which will soon be called The Tennessee Williams Museum - will continue to offer visitors entertaining and informative self-guided tours as well as pre-arranged curator-led tours portraying the history of one of America's greatest 20
th Century playwrights, who won multiple awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
"There has been collaboration on projects through the years and there is a history of cooperation and support that the merger will build on," says Beaver, who will continue to consult and guest curate the museum.

As the Florida Keys continue to recover from the impact of Hurricane Irma, Key West's 126-year-old Custom House hosts their annual "Back In Time" fundraiser on Wednesday, November 29 from 5:00pm - 10:00pm, an event that will support the building's ongoing preservation needs and address current disrepair, raise funds to help support Habitat for Humanity's hurricane-recovery efforts, and toast Scotti Merrill Preservation Award recipient Tom Hambright, one of the best historians and collection-keepers of Key West history.
The second annual "Back In Time" fundraiser is an opportunity for The Society to raise much-needed capital to support their preservation mission. When The Society became stewards of the county-owned building in 1991, it was in near-derelict condition, boarded up and left to sit untouched in the salt air and sun for over two decades. Original leadership spearheaded an ambitious 9-year, 9 million-dollar renovation with the generous support of the community and the late Scotti Merrill. The current Society team continues with the steady efforts and dedication necessary to maintain and preserve the building many consider "Key West's architectural crown jewel."
Last year's inaugural event raised $120,000, monies that will help overhaul the building's failing climate control system, "essential to preserving both the building and the collection," says Executive Director Michael Gieda. They hope this year's event will help raise a portion of the remaining $300,000 needed to complete the repairs. Mayor Craig Cates has proclaimed November as Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month.
"The health of our community's people is the foundation for a caring and productive society," reads the proclamation, "and our future rests with our ability to adequately treat, and ultimately find cures for individuals who are affected with a variety of illnesses including pulmonary hypertension."
Kathleen Ford, a group leader for the Pulmonary Artery Hypertension Key West Support Group, accept the proclamation.
PH is a chronic, life-threatening lung disease marked by elevated blood pressure in the lungs. The insidious affliction, said Ford, is difficult to diagnose early. By the time it is, she said, victims likely only have less than three years to live. It can take three years to diagnose, which makes the treatments that are available less effective.
"This delay in diagnosis has not changed in the past twenty years," reads the proclamation. "Patients who are diagnosed earlier have a longer life-expectancy, and education can help with early diagnosis. Funding for research can also help find a cure."

On the last official days of the 2017 hurricane season (November 30 and December 1) the crew at COAST - the Stock Island based artist and craftsman collective - has organized a two-day benefit concert festival, aptly named "Coast Is Clear", with the goal of raising money and spirits for the Florida Keys community in the wake of hurricane Irma.
To date, the lineup includes national touring artists G. Love, Langhorne Slim, Rayland Baxter and Rorey Carroll - all of whom play to large crowds from coast to coast and at huge festivals like Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza and Monterrey Pop. In addition, local favorites Patrick and The Swayzees and The Skank - among others - will add local flavor to the stages over the two-day event.
The current schedule calls for the Thursday (11/30) performances to take place in the Bahama Village neighborhood with events shifting between Blue Heaven, Green Parrot and The COAST Outpost (803 Whitehead Street). While Friday (12/1) shows will take place on Stock Island at Hogfish and COAST - both located on Front Street.
Says COAST founder Billy Kearins, "We were amazed at how well the community came together after the storm hit and it inspired us to try to create something positive and uplifting in the wake of such devastation. Our concerts have always been a great way for locals to come together for a night, so we figured, let's do that again, while at the same time using the event as a way to raise money for those hit hardest by the storm."
He then added, "So, I got in touch with some friends who play music for a living and was pretty amazed that they all said, 'yeah, we'd love to come down.'"

Sheriff buys equipment for crime fighting partners.
Sheriff Rick Ramsay presented three GPS / Radar units to Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Captain Dave Dipre on Friday. The equipment, purchased with fine and forfeiture funds and not tax dollars - will help boost the crime fighting abilities of FWC officers as they patrol the waters surrounding the Florida Keys.
"I believe in teamwork and partnerships," said Sheriff Ramsay. "We all work together here in the Florida Keys and helping FWC do a better job by providing them with this much needed equipment will help us all do a better job of fighting crime in our county. We all have the same mission: keeping our citizens safe."

Three deputies received Sheriff's Medals for lifesaving at an employee awards ceremony
Deputies Jean Gonzalez, Ignacio Molina and Dave Campbell received the awards; Deputy Gonzalez was actually honored twice for saving two lives in recent months. Deputy Campbell could not be present at the ceremony to accept, but all of the award recipients will receive a letter of commendation and a ribbon to wear on their uniforms.
Deputies Jean Gonzalez and Ignacia Molina were honored for their swift and crucial actions when responding to a deadly incident which took place underground in a Key Largo neighborhood in January of this year. While three people died in the incident, a fourth person - Key Largo Firefighter Leonardo Moreno - survived due in part to the quick actions of the two responding deputies, who performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived.
Deputies Jean Gonzalez and Dave Campbell were honored for their life saving efforts at Calusa Campground in June of this year. The two deputies responded to the area for a possible medical emergency. They found a man not breathing. The two performed lifesaving CPR on the man until paramedics arrived. The man was airlifted to a Miami hospital where he made a complete recovery.
"We are proud of these deputies for their quick actions in performing lifesaving CPR and saving these people's lives," said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. "Their actions are to be commended and we honor them today for their service to the community and to the Sheriff's Office."
