rd floor XOJ Gallery, visitors can tap into "Street Level," a more candid, photojournalistic view of the Fest, as documented by photographers Lynne Bentley-Kemp, Mark Hedden, Martha Hubbard and Carol Tedesco.
"Every year since 1993 I have been a participant and documenter of Fantasy Fest," said Cudjoe Key-based photographer Bentley-Kemp. "This ritual is a true collaboration of the wonderful, creative people who have no qualms about expressing their indulgence in anarchy and liminality. I am a big fan of the transgressive and the salacious and I've never been disappointed. This is the only time that I intentionally photograph people - it is where I begin to see the total joy of individual expression. The result is a collection of images that reflects a bawdy and raucous celebration of community. It is a profound statement about the condition of being human." TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN
Chuck Licis sends regards : Are you ready to make a difference? Take Stock in Children, the flagship college scholarship program of the Monroe County Education Foundation, is ready to welcome a
record.

"We have a fantastic group of 77 qualified candidates who are ready to join Take Stock in Children and work towards achieving their goal of a college education. However, if we do not have a volunteer mentor to match with the student, we cannot accept the student into our program," said MCEF president Bryan Green.
Take Stock needs a minimum of 50 new mentors in the Lower Keys, 15 in Marathon, and 15 in the Upper Keys to pair with incoming Take Stock scholars.
"While our mission is to accept all students who meet the academic and economic eligibility requirements, and who have the desire, motivation, and potential to go to college," program coordinator Chuck Licis explained, "we can't bring them into the program without a mentor match."
Who can be a mentor? "Mentors are not tutors or counselors. Mentors are caring, compassionate adults who volunteer their time to guide, support, and encourage our Take Stock scholars. It only takes 45 minutes a week during the school year," Licis explained. "Our mentors are screened and trained before being paired with a student, and we have college success coaches in each area to assist and support our mentors and students."
Take Stock students are given the 'chance of a lifetime' with mentoring in middle and high school followed by the scholarship that pays for four years college tuition and fees. A student is waiting for his or her chance of a lifetime, a college scholarship, but we need your help to make the dream a reality! All money received will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for their work on suicide awareness and prevention.
After just coming through hurricane Irma, many in our community are facing challenges that will affect their mental health. AFSP is providing support for meetings throughout the keys and is working with other local non-profits to provide valuable information on how to deal with the stresses after a major disaster.
And soon to follow will be our 3rd Annual Out of the Darkness Walk on Sunday, December 3rd at the Sheriff's Office on Stock Island.

NOV 10 KEY WEST HIGH SCHOOL "High School Variety Show" at KWT
On November 10th at the Key West theater, members of the student-run Drama Club from Key West High School will perform a variety show for all ages, packed with musical numbers, original songs and scenes, and even stand-up comedy. The
High School Variety Show is a fundraiser for the high school musical, which will also be performed at Key West Theater this spring.
"There are some really talented students in the Drama Club," says Key West Theater Artistic Director Juliet Gray, "and I can't wait to see them perform on our stage." "I'm especially looking forward to a piece from a musical we are developing that two students are writing together. And an original adaptation of Aesop's Fables turned into Key West-centric tales that we are calling 'Bubba's Fables.' It will be a fun, original, fast-paced evening. The fund raised from this Variety Show will go directly towards production needs. My goal is to have student involvement in all areas so they can learn how to be theatrically self-sufficient and eventually put on their own shows with supervision from our team at the Key West Theater."
The High School Variety Show takes place at the Key West Theater at 7pm on November 10th. Doors open at 6pm. Tickets are available at thekeywesttheater.com or by calling (305) 985-0433.

Florida Keys Community College invites aspiring novelists in the community to participate in
"NaNoWriMo," short for National Novel Writing Month this November. The College's Library is an officially designated "Come Write In Spot" for the nationwide event. One part writing boot camp, one part party, NaNoWriMo participants commit to writing 50,000 words in the 30 days of November. Throughout the month, they'll be guided by this year's theme: "Superpowered Noveling."
NaNoWriMo is celebrating its 19th year of encouraging creativity, education, and the power of the imagination through the largest writing event in the world. This year, NaNoWriMo expects over 400,000 people to start a 50,000-word novel during November.
FKCC's NaNoWriMo novelists will meet on Mondays in November from 12 noon to 4 p.m. in the College's Writing Center. Participants should sign up atwww.nanowrimo.org and join the Key West region. "Museums & Me" children's program at the Lighthouse to resume this Saturday; Key West Art & Historical Society waives fee to support families impacted by hurricane Irma
Starting this Saturday, November 4, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, Key West Art & Historical Society reinstates their monthly "Museums & Me" program for children aged 0-6 at the Key West Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters, 938 Whitehead Street, and in order to provide support for families following hurricane Irma, is offering the program for free until January.
This fun, interactive monthly outdoor preschool program presented by early childhood educator Natalie Robinson is offered in partnership with the Healthy Start Coalition and includes movement, story time, and bubble play.
"While we all struggle to return to life before hurricane Irma, families with young children in particular are looking for a sense of normalcy and structure," says Society Director of Education Adele Williams. "So, while the Society has had to cut back on some of our programing due to the fiscal impacts of Irma, providing a free and entertaining outlet for learning and engagement with local cultural institutions is our way of supporting that need."

As the Florida Keys continue to recover from the impact of Hurricane Irma, Key West's 126-year-old Custom House hosts their annual "Back In Time" fundraiser on Wednesday, November 29 from 5:00pm - 10:00pm, an event that will support the building's ongoing preservation needs and address current disrepair, raise funds to help support Habitat for Humanity's hurricane-recovery efforts, and toast Scotti Merrill Preservation Award recipient Tom Hambright, one of the best historians and collection-keepers of Key West history.
The second annual "Back In Time" fundraiser is an opportunity for The Society to raise much-needed capital to support their preservation mission. When The Society became stewards of the county-owned building in 1991, it was in near-derelict condition, boarded up and left to sit untouched in the salt air and sun for over two decades. Original leadership spearheaded an ambitious 9-year, 9 million-dollar renovation with the generous support of the community and the late Scotti Merrill. The current Society team continues with the steady efforts and dedication necessary to maintain and preserve the building many consider "Key West's architectural crown jewel."
Last year's inaugural event raised $120,000, monies that will help overhaul the building's failing climate control system, "essential to preserving both the building and the collection," says Executive Director Michael Gieda. They hope this year's event will help raise a portion of the remaining $300,000 needed to complete the repairs. Parade season has officially begun! First Fantasy Fest, and the Veteran's Day Parade, then it's time to plan your float for the upcoming Key West Holiday Parade!
Floats can be of any length, but must be maneuverable and no more than 15 feet wide and 12 feet high. Each entry requires monitors. A monitor's meeting will be held in late November.
Entry forms must be received by Monday, November 20
th. The parade takes place on Saturday, December 2nd, beginning at 7 p.m. at the corner of White Street and Truman Avenue. Nancy D'Amato emcees the event from the judges viewing platform.

The support the FKSPCA received pre- and post-Irma has been amazing and heartwarming. Thanks to the support of this community we were able to foster 197 animals to safety prior to the storm. This enabled the staff of the FKSPCA to breathe easy knowing the animals were out of harm's way and, more importantly, these foster families saved lives.
After the storm the FKSPCA began to receive offers of help from individuals, foundations, corporations and animal welfare partners. This support enabled the FKSPCA to provide food, vet care and temporary housing for animals belonging to displaced community residents and for animals in the community that were left during the storm. The outpouring of concern and support will never be forgotten.
As we move forward the FKSPCA is working to implement programs to help the pet owners of our community who have suffered as a result of Irma. The FKSPCA will be holding free clinics to provide routine wellness and medical care for the pets of those residents who have been displaced and are trying to get back on their feet. We will also continue to provide free shelter through our FAITH program for residents needing someplace for their pet to go while they find shelter themselves. If you are a resident needing assistance please call the shelter in Key West at 305-294-4857 or in Marathon at 305-743-4800.
