Events Planned for the Whole Family
Children's Area Spruced Up
Now that the library is open to the public again, please come in and see the updates we’ve made to the Children’s Area. Although we cannot yet put out our toys and puzzles, you’ll be able to sit down and browse the books in front of the window.  A study area for tutors and students can be found near the new family bathroom by the round tables. This area also features the New Books Display for the new Juvenile Chapter Books and Easy Readers. We’ve also moved a set of encyclopedias, dictionaries, and reference books to this area with some school supplies children can use when they are studying in the library.
The Creative Corner has moved opposite the study area and, although not fully opened yet, children can currently use some art supplies set out in this area. Hand sanitizer is available and patrons are encouraged to clean their hands before and after using the supplies. Some new signage will help you locate the nonfiction books and your favorite authors.

The Juvenile chapter book section has shifted slightly and signage on the shelves will direct you to the new location for the Graphic Novels section and the American Girl series. New Juvenile Nonfiction is now on display by the Juvenile Biographies.

Who Loves Llamas? We Do!
Stop in the Children’s Area and pick up our next Take-Home Craft Bag- it’s a tribute to lovely llamas! The craft bag contains two llama crafts and some activity sheets for you to try at home.
Assemble and decorate a paper plate llama and learn to weave on the second llama. No registration required, but supplies are limited and the bags are only available through Saturday, March 6.

St. Patrick's Day Children's Contest
Can you find the lucky Leprechauns hiding out in the Library? Grab a contest paper from the table by the Children’s Librarians and search all the Children’s Department for leprechauns holding flowers. Write down the letters on the flowers to reveal a secret message!

At Home Activity to Welcome Back Spring
If you can’t make it into the library just yet, try our Spring Fever Word Search at home. Go to the Children’s Programs tab on our website and look for the “At-Home Activities” section. Click on the link to download and print the word search at home.

Adolescents and Screen Time-Should You Be Worried?
Over the past decade the use of digital media, including interactive and social media, has grown dramatically among young people and there is evidence that suggests the use of digital media can offer both benefits and risks.  During the pandemic parents may have become even more aware of the amount of time adolescents are spending in front of a screen as they do schoolwork on a computer and keep in contact with their friends through their phones.  On-line gaming has become a distraction for many young people since participation in clubs and sports is no longer filling their time.

These benefits were found in the November 2016 issue of Pediatrics:
-exposure to new ideas and knowledge
-increased opportunities for social contact and support
-new opportunities to access health promotion messages and information
The risks included:
-negative health effects on sleep, attention and learning
-a higher incidence of obesity and depression
-exposure to inaccurate, in appropriate, or unsafe content and contacts
-compromised privacy and confidentiality

To read the full report, follow the link below to the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics and get more insight on how to help your adolescents make good decisions on digital media use.

Interested in setting up a Family Media Agreement with your family?  A family media plan helps parents ensure that your kids know how to safely use digital media and can help parents feel less intimidated and afraid of what their children are doing online.  Here are two articles that will give you an idea of what a Family Media Agreement entails.

Virtual Book Club
Catch up with our library's Virtual Book Club this week on our Facebook page. This week, we focus on Anxious People by Frederik Backman

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life or death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include an eclectic bunch of people from a retired couple obsessed with hunting down fixer-uppers to avoid the truth, to a young couple about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree to anything to a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom. Each person carries grievances, secrets and passions ready to boil over, and none of them is who they appear to be, including the failed bank robber. As the authorities and media surround the premises, these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion an unexpected chain of events.
