As I See It
Dear Alumni,
Late February during Intercession the Upper Division took a division-wide look at food insecurity. The Seventh Grade was particularly interested in the All Souls Church food kitchen with which Allen-Stevenson has had a long association. Covid has put an end to boys serving the lunches; and yet the School maintained making and delivering Sun Butter sandwiches to the soup kitchen. The seventh graders wondered if they could do more and met with the administrative team at the soup kitchen, where they learned a good deal about their needs. The class turned community service into a contest: teams competed in devising “best ways” to help the soup kitchen in these difficult days. Mr. Trower, the Head of School, chose the winning proposal, which involved Allen-Stevenson boys performing for the soup-kitchen guests as they lined up on Lexington Avenue between 79th and 80th Streets. What a terrific idea!
The first performances took place this month when cellists seventh-grader Alexander and eighth-grader Emile played classical pieces—Bach, Vivaldi, the haunting Faure elegy---with one modern piece, a little variation, called “Sailing Down the River,” to the amusement of those in line—and those passing by. “If music be the food of love, play on . . .” right on Lexington Avenue.
All best,
D. Kersey
