As I See It
Dear Alumni,
Last week I wandered into the School’s Assembly Hall to find the maintenance staff hanging the backdrop for Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore. The scenery is set as the Pinafore’s quarterdeck with side panels of the Houses of Parliament; at the sight of it, I threw back my shoulders and stood straight: we’re all about to be impressed into the Royal Navy.
In the hallways, tuneful phrases--and so are his sisters and his cousins and his aunts— further convinced me that spring was really not so far away. Remember Ralph Rackstraw, Dick Deadeye, Josephine? Sorry her lot who loves too well. I remembered and was feeling sentimental when a member of the class of ’88 emailed to remind me how embarrassed he was when, in the middle of a G&S dress rehearsal, a fire drill forced him and his fellows onto 78th Street in full maiden gear.
Maiden gear, emphasis on gear—girls’ hose!--the mysteries of lipstick and rouge, skirt twirling in the basement of St. Jean’s Church, the Assembly Hall, the tiny old gym or the Barbizon-Plaza Hotel—where did you rehearse?
As I said, I’m hearing it in the schoolhouse—sisters, cousins and aunts “Gaily tripping, Lightly skipping” and sailors bursting into “We sail the ocean blue, And our saucy ship's a beauty; We're sober men and true, And attentive to our duty.” And now I invite you to a live stream of this year’s performance on March 9 at 7PM. What fun!
All best,
D. Kersey
