New monument honors union victims of Centralia tragedy
This Saturday, November 11th, the Industrial Workers of the World will host a dedication ceremony for the Centralia IWW Monument in Centralia, WA. The dedication will be at 1pm in Washington Park, followed by events at the restored Railroad Depot. From 3-6 pm there will be discussions, tours, and Union displays. At 7 pm there will be a free public concert featuring Linda Allen, Mark Ross and other union friends. Both Linda and Mark sang at the 2019 events in Centralia, when the IWW. marked the anniversary of the events of 1919. “For almost 100 years the Legion Statue, the Sentinel, has told one side of the story,” says the IWW. “It states that the four Legion members depicted were ‘slain while on peaceful parade’. The IWW memorial will counter that narrative with the statement that the IWW victims were ‘Defending Their Union Hall’”. Read more here.

CORRECTIONS & APOLOGIES
In last week’s story about LHF Executive Director Elise Bryant’s retirements I made several major errors and omissions: first of all, I misspelled the names of LHF founders Joe Glazer and Saul Schniderman (so sorry, guys!); Rocky Delaplaine wrote in to gently remind me that she served as LHF’s Executive Director in 1991 while Laurel Blaydes was on maternity leave and then Blaydes and Delaplaine co-shared the role from 1991 until 1997. “We got along so well Pete Seeger said he was amazed and doubted any two men could have shared one job so seamlessly,” Rocky wrote.
Also, I forgot to include Elise’s email address for those who wish to congratulate her and stay in touch: elise123107@verizon.net.
My sincere and abject apologies for these errors and omissions; I’ll work hard to eliminate them in the future but please don’t hesitate to let me know -- execdir@laborheritage.org -- any time you spot something that needs correcting or updating.

Check out this week's Labor History Today podcast, How matchgirls sparked the British labour movement. LHT’s Chris Garlock tours the East London site of the 1888 Matchgirls Strike with Union Dues podcast host Simon Sapper.
Sit-down strike begins at Austin, Minn. Hormel plant with the help of a Wobbly organizer, leading to the creation of the Independent Union of All Workers. Labor historians believe this may have been the first sit-down strike of the 1930s. Workers held the plant for three days, demanding a wage increase. The governor mediated a settlement.
