Labor Heritage Power Hour radio show

“TRIANGLE: Scenes from a Prosecution”

“This is not the first time when girls have been burned alive in this city. Every week, I learn of the untimely death of one of my sister workers. Every year, thousands of us are maimed. The lives of men and women are cheap, while property is sacred.”

This week’s Labor Heritage Power Hour radio show begins with these angry and frustrated words spoken by labor organizer and feminist Rose Schneiderman, from the new play “TRIANGLE: Scenes from a Prosecution”. Show co-hosts Chris Garlock and Elise Bryant talk with the writer, producer and director of the play, which opened last weekend and continues this weekend and next (click here for details). They also talk about the long-awaited Triangle Fire Memorial to the victims and legacy of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, which was unveiled and dedicated last week at the site of the historic fire in New York City. Plus, music and poetry by Bev Grant, Joe Glazer and John O’Connor. Listen and share!

Garlock Thames Path walk raises nearly $3K for LHF

“We made it!” So says jubilant – and footsore – Labor Heritage Foundation Co-Executive Director Chris Garlock after completing the Thames Path, a 216-mile trek “from source to sea” with his wife, Lisa. “Thanks to everyone who contributed so generously to my LHF fundraiser, which surpassed my original goal and has -- so far -- raised $2,760 to support LHF programs. “The walk was tougher than we anticipated, but the experience and opportunity to see the English country and people literally at the grassroots level surpassed all expectations. It was especially inspiring to see so much amazing street art, both in London and along the Path; that’s the true people’s art!” Now that he’s accomplished his Walk goal Garlock is looking forward to carrying forward outgoing LHF Executive Director Elise Bryant’s work, and notes that “for those who haven’t yet had a chance to contribute, the LHF Thames Path fundraiser is still live!”

LABOR HISTORY TODAY

Check out this week's Labor History Today podcast, Weapons of the Boss. In 1953 the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) established a set of ten guiding principles at its’ tenth biennial convention in San Francisco. This manifesto represents a fascinating historical document, a snapshot in time but also a roadmap, a statement of aspiration calling upon union members to look beyond internal conflicts derived from factionalism, prejudice, even tradition.
