Triangle Fire Dedication Ceremony streams live today

The long-awaited Triangle Fire Memorial to the victims and legacy of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire will be dedicated today, Wednesday, October 11, at 11:30a at the site of the historic fire in New York City. The outdoor dedication ceremony (rain or shine) is open to the public, features U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and will also be livestreamed here.

Rising nine stories high, the Memorial is being installed on the very building that housed the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, at the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place in Greenwich Village. The Triangle Fire Memorial tells the story of the fire in the languages spoken by the victims: English, Yiddish and Italian. It will also be one of the only memorials in America dedicated to workers. Learn more about the Memorial’s design and construction here.

HISTORY: Rare Opportunity to See Sewing Machine That Survived the 1911 Triangle Fire

The “Collective Ribbon” exhibition tells the story of a unique participatory process in the design of the Triangle Fire Memorial. “Our community of people from all walks of life came together and sewed a long ribbon made of hundreds of pieces of fabric. Gathered across long rows of sewing tables, the participants created a tapestry of personal fragments, stories and memories of the Triangle Fire. The texture of this collective ribbon is now etched into the steel of the permanent memorial for the Triangle Fire, making a lasting reminder of the many individual voices and stories that were, and still are, interwoven with the story and the legacy of the Triangle Fire. The exhibition offers a glimpse into some of the stories and exchanges that unfolded during the making of the ribbon, and the role of the ribbon as a communal act of commemoration, linking the present to the 1911 Triangle Fire.”

Special Note: Exhibition includes a sewing machine that survived the 1911 Triangle Fire
