Become a Permanent Part of the Wall Art
Do you want to have your name painted as a permanent piece of the mural on the exterior wall of the library? There's still time! Muralist, Atalie Gagnet, and her team, have finalized the artwork on the exterior wall of the library and our goal is to continue to accept donations for this project until November 1; however maintenance will continue on the wall art where donations will still be accepted through 2021.

If you take a pic of the mural and post it on social media, please be sure to tag our library and the muralist, Atalie Gagnet, in your social media posts (for Instagram: @tippcitylibrary and @nocatsinamerica; for Facebook: Tipp City Public Library and Atalie Gagnet).

This large art installation is partially community funded--THANK YOU to our supporters and individual donors who have funded this project--this project would not be possible without the support of the Tipp City Foundation, Tipp City Area Arts Council and the Tipp City Chamber of Commerce Teen Leadership Academy and more. If interested in learning more about supporting this project, contact our Library Director, Lisa Santucci, at (937) 667-3826 or director@tippcitylibrary.org.
Final Words Chosen for Wall Art
Thank you to everyone who contributed their words to be considered as part of the large wall art installation on permanent display on our exterior wall that faces the alley. Over 70 words were received, and our library was able to select 10 words to be painted on the wall. The following words were submitted by each of the individuals listed and these words were chosen to be painted on the mural:
We would like to thank everyone who submitted their words for consideration. Many of the words chosen were submitted anonymously. Congratulations to the above listed people for submitting one of the above 10 chosen words.

A celebration will be announced soon that will formally unveil the artwork. Stay connected with our library through our newsletter, website and Facebook page for the latest information.

Virtual Book Club
Catch up with our library's Virtual Book Club this week on our Facebook page. This week, we focus on Dear Martin by Nic Stone.

According to socialjusticebooks.org, Dear Martin is, "Raw, captivating, and undeniably real.” Dear Martin follows the story of Justyce McCallister, an honor roll student who is planning to go to an Ivy League college. None of these facts matter, however, when Justyce is stopped by police and put in handcuffs. After this day, Justyce begins seeking wisdom from Martin Luther King Jr. by writing letters to him. One day, Justyce and his friend are stopped by a white off-duty cop. Words and shots fly, and Justyce and his friend are caught in the crosshairs. In the media fallout, it’s Justyce who is under attack.

You can find Dear Martin for download on one of our free online streaming services like Hoopla or Libby.
Events Planned for the Whole Family
Halloween Fun for the Family
Making Halloween-themed plans this month? Don’t forget to visit our library and try the Spooky Silhouette’s Scavenger Hunt in the Children's Department and the Spot the Difference in the display case by the back entrance. Children get to earn prizes for participating!

The Children's Department has also added a new at-home activity to the Children’s Program webpage. The Halloween Scavenger Hunt is a fun car activity as you drive home or a great game to play as you walk through your neighborhood and find the Halloween-themed items on the list. Download the Halloween Scavenger Hunt from the Children’s Program webpage or pickup a copy in the Children’s Department of our library.
Take Home Activity Packs Return in the Children's Department
Back by popular demand, the Children’s Department will be making new activity packets available starting the last week of October and through the end of the year. We know our youngest patrons miss the Creative Corner and special programming at the library, so we’re bringing the fun to you at-home through our Take-Home Activity Packs.

These activities will be on the table in the Children’s area near the back entrance. Each week, families are welcome to grab one for each child. The packs range from craft projects with all of the materials included, to games to make and play at home, to activity sheets to keep your childrens' brains active. These activities are designed to give your child STEM learning, fine motor skills practice, and a chance to use their creativity.

NEW this week for pickup is a Halloween take-home craft bag available at our library in the Children's area near the back entrance. Inside the bag, you will find a scratch-art mask to decorate for Halloween, then use the remaining craft items in the bag to create a monster sack-puppet.
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Each year, October is recognized worldwide as Dyslexia Awareness Month: a time to come together to raise awareness, share resources, and tell stories about dyslexia successes. Dyslexia is a spectrum learning disability, meaning, not all people experience dyslexia in the same way. According to the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), up to 15-20% of the population as a whole may have symptoms of dyslexia, including slow or inaccurate reading, weak spelling, and poor writing.

Libraries are often asked, “What types of books should I look for to help a child with dyslexia?” Audiobooks are an important option for children with dyslexia and other struggling readers. While listening to an audiobook, children can follow the words in the book while listening to someone reading the text, which helps children to understand and learn how to read. Our library provides books on CD for children and teens as well as Playaways, which are portable media players that are pre-loaded with book titles. All the titles in the audio collection are also available in book format. You can also download audiobooks from Hoopla and Libby, if the title you are seeking is not available in our collection.

Another great option for dyslexic readers is graphic novels. Graphic novels offer dyslexic readers several different cues to the story. If a reader gets snagged on the vocabulary or storyline of a graphic novel, illustrated pages offer contextual cues to help decipher the meaning. Our library has graphic novels in both the Children’s and Teen collections.

Large print books are another option for dyslexic readers. The larger font can help readers distinguish letters, and large print books tend to have more white space on the page. While most of our large print collection is for adults, downloading a book on Libby or Hoopla gives the reader the choice to change the font size on their device. Libby also allows the reader to change the font type to OpenDyslexic which is a font type that is easier to read for people with dyslexia. You can also change the background color, which helps cut down on the glare from the screen.

For more information on helping a child with dyslexia, visit the IDA website and check out their Fact Sheets.
