Beanstack Winter Challenge Is Almost Here!
For the fourth year in a row, Beanstack presents the annual Winter Reading Challenge at the Tipp City Library. Simon & Schuster’s "Books Like Us" program sponsors this challenge, which supports public libraries and school systems throughout the United States. Simon & Schuster will award book collections and virtual author visits to the winning libraries and schools of the Winter Reading Challenge.

Our library will be participating again this year from January 2-31. The top ten winning schools and libraries will each get a collection of 50 books from Simon & Schuster’s “Books Like Us” initiative. Additionally, our local readers are eligible for twenty raffle prizes like gift bags and gift cards from local businesses. We will reveal all of the prizes in our next newsletter!

To participate in the Winter Reading Challenge, log-in to your Beanstack account from last year’s Winter Reading Challenge or from the 2020 Summer Reading Program. If you are new to Beanstack, go to our library's webpage beginning Monday, December 28 to open a Beanstack account by clicking on the banner that looks like the image below. An adult should open an account for the family, then register each family member so that they can track their reading and win raffle tickets for our grand prizes. You also earn a virtual badge for each book read.

For the Winter Reading Challenge, all ages will record the number of books they read from
January 1-31 in their Beanstack account. This year, we will use Beanstack’s virtual raffle format, so you do not have to come into the library to fill out your raffle tickets. When you have read enough books to earn raffle tickets, your Beanstack account will automatically contact you and ask you which prize you would like your raffle tickets to be entered for. Participants will receive one raffle ticket for each book read, up to twelve books. The number of raffle tickets you receive per book will increase once you have read five books and increases again for reading ten to twelve books.

Use the hashtag #WinterRead2021 on your social media accounts to tell us your reading progress or what you are reading. Beanstack awards us extra points when our patrons use this hashtag. Our goal this year is to read 1,800 books as a community during the month of January. What better way to spend this winter than cozying up with a good book!

Virtual Book Club
Catch up with our library's Virtual Book Club this week on our Facebook page. This week, we focus on P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han.

P.S. I Still Love You continues the story of Lara Jean, a girl we met in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by the same author. Lara Jean is a girl who is always in love, but when she falls out of love, she writes a letter. When her letters are discovered, she faces the consequences and learns who she is and what she wants from her life. In P.S. I Still Love You, Lara Jean is happy with her life, until she begins to write more letters, and a series of events unfolds that makes her contemplate the choices she has made in her life.

You can find P.S. I Still Love You for download on one of our free online streaming services like Hoopla or Libby.

I-SPY Contest in the Display Case NOW!
Miss Julie has created a Holiday I-Spy in our display case by the back entrance of our library for everyone to enjoy. Even though our building is currently closed to the public, children can still come to the back entrance and try to find all of the items on the list posted inside the display case. See what treasures you can find in our Holiday I-Spy Contest.
Check Our Pinterest Board for At-Home Activities
The Youth Services department is taking a break from making Children’s and Teen’s Take-Home Activity Bags for the next four weeks. We plan to make another announcement in late January about when these activity bags will resume.

In the meantime, please check out the Tipp City Public Library Pinterest boards. We continue to add new craft ideas, exceptional websites for children, and parenting resources to our Pinterest boards. There are also posts related to past summer reading programs, children’s music, and craft projects used at our storytimes and programs, as well as STEM activities to try at home, and craft ideas for teens.
Keep Those Letters to Santa Coming!
There is still a little more time this holiday season to get your letters mailed to Santa at our library. We have been passing them on to the North Pole so Santa and his elves can get your wishes ready for his Christmas Eve delivery. Just stop by the rear entrance at our library during our hours of operation and drop your letters in the library’s special mailbox. We will make sure each and every letter makes its way to Santa in time for the elves to deliver the gifts!
Highlights @ Home
Many of us grew up with Highlights magazine or read them while waiting at the doctor’s office. Founded in 1946 in Pennsylvania, Highlights for Children, Inc. is dedicated to the belief that children are the world’s most important people. The company has expanded over the years to include activity books, textbooks, and educational seminars for educators.

On the INFOhio databases linked from our Children’s webpage, you can find the Highlight’s Library in the “Ages 3-5” and “Grades K-5” resource pages. Highlights Library features fiction and nonfiction e-books children can read on-screen or listen to. The books are also leveled according to Lexile and DRA Level rankings.

Another fun resource from Highlights for Children, Inc. is the Highlights @ Home website. On this website, find free puzzle games, stories, crafts, and printable activities for kids ages 4–12. Our Children's Librarian's favorite is the “Get Cozy” theme.
Upcoming Programs for 6th-12th Grade Youth
Helping Teens Choose a College During the Pandemic
High School juniors and seniors currently have limited opportunities to visit college campuses, but there are still opportunities for students to learn more about college prospects. Most colleges and universities have turned to virtual open houses and interactive walking tours on campus.  Click here to take a virtual tour at Miami University. Click here to take an interactive walking tour of Edison State Community College.

Parents and students looking for help on narrowing down their college list or deciding what factors to consider when choosing a college will find this article helpful. The article, “How to Help Teens Choose the Right College Amid the Pandemic,” is from the Penguin Random House online resource Read Brightly.

Our library has several books to help you with your decision making, and study guides for the ACT and SAT tests, as well as study guides for some of the AP exams.

In past years, our library has invited presenters to talk to students and parents about the college application process and how to find scholarships. Email our library's Youth Services Department at hthiele@tippcitylibrary.org if interested in a Zoom chat or Facebook Live presentation in January or February to discuss these opportunities.
