Dear Alumni,
There are lots of big changes at the School this year: no Middle School, three teaching sections instead of two, a seven-day teaching cycle, and a sparkling renovated and expanded schoolhouse with its own new geography. In some ways, we are also new to each other, all together in person, every day. All this while completing the search for a new Head of School.
What hasn’t changed is that we are still trying to maintain our distance, wash our hands and remain masked. (The mask protocol has been lightened somewhat by the fact that our new seven-day cycle is in sync with the seven colors of the visible spectrum. Upper School Division Head, Steve Cohen, creatively provided faculty with packs: Day One, red mask, Day Two, orange mask, and so forth. Now, if only I could remember what day it is.)
Change comes slowly in schools, but with some tweaking, the faculty seems to be adjusting to the new schedule and the restructured divisions - and my colleagues are now delighting in smaller teaching sections. As the School begins redecorating the interior walls, I look forward to seeing alumni pictures hung again, lots of them, I hope. I particularly like the large photo collage near the elevator of boys in knickerbockers or boys in orchestra under Mr. Gauger’s baton. Unrecognizable boys turned maidens or wrestlers grappling with our rivals—we all have our favorites—these reminders that school life has been going on for a long time and its joys as registered in the faces of boys at school don’t change, perhaps even grow louder.
All best,
D. Kersey
