As a result of the abrupt departure of Antonio Brown, the Oakland Raiders have signed Keelan Doss to the team. Doss was on the practice squad for the Jacksonville Jaguars but he is now coming home to be part of his favorite team.
A native of Alameda and a standout during preseason, Doss put up significant numbers before being waived by the Raiders on August 31.

San Francisco Giants at a Glance
San Francisco Giants center fielder Kevin Pillar (1) slides safely into home as Oakland Athletics catcher Chris Herrmann can't apply the tag during the second inning at RingCentral Coliseum on August 25. The Giants would sweep the last two games of the Bay Bridge Series with a 5-4 win.
* * *
Rivalry aside, last week the Giants faced a flat-out frightening week on the road as they squared off with two first-place squads, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
For a Giants squad that was 5-8 against their division rivals heading into the weekend, there was actually a glimmer of hope considering they hadn't faced The Blue since heating up for an MLB-best record in July -- and of course, there is always hope in a rivalry series. However, given a sub-par August which relegated San Francisco to below .500, combined with a current four-game win streak for Los Angeles, it was tough to envision a dominant performance by the Giants.
This is especially true given San Francisco's inconsistent offensive production last week, in which the Giants put up just sixteen runs over seven games (fourteen of those came during just two games), including suffering three shut outs. The biggest moment at the dish for the Giants came on Wednesday, as San Francisco put up nine runs in a one-run victory. However, even this performance came with its own issues, as the Giants blew first a four-run lead, then a three-run lead before Kevin Pillar roped a two-run homer in the eighth to all but secure the 9-8 triumph. But with this bout aside, the other matchups from St. Louis were forgettable, as the Giants were dominated in 3-1, 1-0, and 10-0 defeats. This, however, was just the warm-up for the rivalry series over the weekend, which carried extra importance for Giants fans who understood that a postseason run is now virtually impossible.
As it turned out, San Francisco showed up strong despite the heavy mismatch reflected in the records. The 92-win Dodgers, just shy of clinching the NL West title, fought late in a tight 5-4 San Francisco victory on Friday. Ultimately, though, the Giants received hefty support from rookies Mauricio Dubon and Mike Yastrzemski, who spearheaded a four-run fifth inning with a two-run home run and a two-RBI double, respectively. This inning was not only enough to secure game one of the series but it also inspired hope across the fan base for the new generation of Giants who will expand their contributions in the 2020 season.
If scoring has been inconsistent for San Francisco this season, then turning in solid starts on the mound has been equally so. Starter Tyler Beede, who nursed a 3-9 record heading into Saturday's matchup, has been part of that inconsistency. On Saturday, fortunately, the positive side reared its head and Beede logged a four-hit shutout appearance over five innings. Giants relievers did not allow a single hit for the rest of the bout and San Francisco emerged victorious, 1-0, to clinch the rivalry series in Los Angeles. Because of this feat, the Giants' 5-0 loss on Sunday didn't feel quite so bad. After all, it was the third time San Francisco was shut out during week.
San Francisco is now 69-74 on the season, 7.5 games back from the second NL Wild Card position with 19 to play. The Giants return to Oracle Park for a seven-game homestand this week, involving the Pittsburgh Pirates for four games midweek and the Miami Marlins for
a three-game weekend set.

Oakland A's at a Glance
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman (26) reaches out for a pop fly during the first inning against the Detroit Tigers at RingCentral Coliseum.
* * *
In this last stretch of the regular season, baseball fans across the country now have a full sense of their team's dynamics as play unfolded throughout 2019. Patterns of success have emerged but so have deficiencies. This is true everywhere and not just for teams like Oakland, where playoff hopes are strong and the race is wild. Eliminating deficiencies for MLB teams is the vision for the future and the A's need to lock down their shortcomings in the coming weeks to ensure
October baseball.
Matt Chapman, locked into an 0-12 streak at the dish heading into the eighth inning of Saturday night's matchup, juiced a solo shot to left field to snap that line. On that homer, Chappy also tied for the title of most home runs by an A's third baseman in a single season, at 32 with Eric Chavez. This came during a notable night for Oakland's offense, as Matt Olson recorded a 4-for-4, 3 RBI outing at the dish and Jurickson Profar became the sixth A's batter to log 20 home runs on the season. Oakland dominated on the mound as well behind starter Chris Bassitt. A's pitchers combined for 19 punch-outs, eleven from Bassitt and a season high for an Oakland pitcher. Oakland swamped the Tigers, 10-2, and it is evident this outing was a part of a larger offensive dominance built throughout the season, a pattern which fans and players alike will seek to maintain throughout the coming weeks.
On Friday the Athletics took a trip through space and time to finish out a ballgame suspended in the seventh inning back on May 19 at Comerica Park in Detroit. Yes, that meant the Tigers completed the last few innings as the technical home team at RingCentral Coliseum on Friday afternoon, part of a one-and-a-quarter header for the A's, who emerged victorious,7-3.
It was an unique situation for Oakland, one that required they stretch their relievers for six innings, rather than the usual two or three. This led to a situation far less unique in the second matchup, in which A's relievers gave up a four-run lead late for a loss. Entering the seventh and ahead 4-0, starter Homer Bailey gave up two runs before exiting. Jake Diekman relieved in the eighth and turned in yet another poor appearance, allowing two runs which would send the game to extras and an A's loss in the eleventh, 5-4. This felt eerily similar to last Sunday's 5-4 meltdown in New York, in which the same lead was blown over a similar time line.
These are not unique occurrences either, as relievers are now responsible for 26 losses.
Regardless of this nagging inconsistency, this was Oakland's only loss last week, leaving them 1.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Indians and secure -- at the moment -- in the second AL Wild Card spot. This week the A's face a tough road opponent in the Houston Astros before keeping that Texas feeling in Arlington for the weekend. Although the 'Stros series is intimidating, given their dominance all season, Oakland will receive support from Jesus Luzardo, one of their top pitching prospects, who was called up on Sunday. Starting pitcher Sean Manaea, just returning from the injured list, will also help as he tossed a ten-strikeout gem on Sunday and is slated to remain in the rotation. Reliever Yusmeiro Petit returned to the A's locker room after two days in grief in the wake of his father's passing. He stepped back on the mound on Sunday and dealt two strikeouts over a single inning, in what Oakland teammate Mark Canha called a "gutsy" performance in a public show of support following the 3-1 victory.
The Oakland Athletics are now 84-59, in sole possession of the second AL Wild Card
position
by 1.5 games.

Dribbling Around the World

In June I wrote a piece entitled NBA World Ball. A few signature events have occurred since then that showcase the NBA's global footprint getting larger by the day.
Joe Tsai, the Chinese co-founder of global e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba, recently paid $3.4 billion dollars for the Brooklyn Nets and their arena, Barclays Center, to Russian Oligarch Mikhail Prokhorov.
Prokhorov was the NBA's first non-North American owner in 2010 and the architect of moving the team from New Jersey to Brooklyn in 2012. Let's give props to former Cal Bear basketballer,now Nets GM, Sean Marks from Auckland, not Oakland. Marks was the first Kiwi to play in the NBA. He recently acquired two guys named Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

Oakland Roots turned back
|
The Oakland Roots opened up their second game of the season against FC Juarez to a sold out crowd Sunday evening at Laney College. FC Juarez, currently 16th in Liga MX (Mexico's first division), came out with all guns blazing and Diego Roland scored their first goal within three minutes. Roland then added another goal five minutes later. The Roots could not figure out how to stop the Bravos de Juarez, who added a third goal courtesy of Dario Lezcano at minute 12. The stunned crowd still found it in them to chant "Go Roots." The Roots seemed to find their game and started playing, which was rewarded at minute 28 with a goal from Benji Joya, giving the home crowd hope. The game was fairly even until just before half time when FC Juarez struck again on a beautiful goal from Roland to complete his hat trick before half time. FC Juarez 4 Roots 1.
To start the second half FC manager Gabriel Caballero subbed out six players. The subs did not drop the high level of play, however the Roots raised theirs by scoring a nice goal in the 49th minute by Andres Jimenez. Roots manager Paul Bravo brought on six subs, including crowd favorite Julio Cervantes and youth national team player Quinn Rodgers. The Roots continued to attack away but could not find another goal and ended up losing, 4-2.
In the end, this was a case of two teams at different stages. FC Juarez is eight games into their season in arguably the best league in the Americas and Roots is in their second game, period. The scoring line reflected the disparity. The Roots will get better on the field but nothing can be better than the crowd support and the atmosphere at the game.

Sports Prep Star -- Nate Sanchez
Serra-San Mateo - Football - Senior
With his team playing a much-hyped early season game under the lights of Levi's Stadium, Nate Sanchez, the three-year varsity starter and captain, delivered a performance worthy of the glitzy NFL setting. Sanchez scored all five of the Padres touchdowns in a 38-13 non-league win over Menlo-Atherton-Atherton. He caught three passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing six times for 32 yards and three more scores. He also completed a 29-yard pass during Serra's first offensive series of the game. The Padres (2-0) entered the game ranked No. 5 in SportStars' NorCal rankings and Menlo-Atherton (1-1) was No. 4.
