Microsoft Supports Students
With a mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, Microsoft has reached out to Southside Virginia in a big way. There are 14 current recipients of the Microsoft Datacenter Scholarship. The scholarship makes it possible for the students to take classes in Information Technology.
The recipients of these awards were recognized with a ceremony and dinner held at the Estes Community Center on June 11, 2018. The students take classes through Southside Virginia Community College's Center for Information Technology Excellence (CITE) at the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill and the IT Academy (ITA) of the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston.

Carter Machinery Donates Excavator to Diesel Tech Program
Carter Machinery recently donated and delivered a Caterpillar 214B Rubber Tire Excavator to SVCC's Diesel Technician program.
In addition to the donated excavator, Carter Machinery supports the program through a generous scholarship fund.

Lealon M. Vassar Scholarship Established
 Family and friends have established the Lealon M. Vassar Scholarship at Southside Virginia Community College in his memory and to recognize his contributions to the community, service to others, leadership skills, work ethic, and honesty.
Shannon Vassar Feinman, his daughter, notes, "He was an extraordinary person in too many ways to count. He has been quietly helping people through education and training for years and believed strongly that it changes lives. We honor him now by formalizing that characteristic through this scholarship."

2018 Fred "Freddie" Reekes Annual Memorial Golf Classic Sets Record
Over $17,000 was raised to support student scholarships at the SVCC Foundation's recent Fred "Freddie" Reekes Annual Memorial Golf Classic.
This year marked the 11th annual golf classic. Since inception, the tournaments have raised over $130,000 to benefit students, thanks to teams and sponsors.

Southside Virginia Community College Celebrates GED Recipients
This fiscal year beginning on July 1, 2017, a total of 435 individuals enrolled in Southside Virginia Community College's Adult Education program. These students are from the ten counties served which include Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward. Classes and study materials are free and there are day/night classes in every county.
In 2017-18, a total of 52 individuals enrolled in the program earned their GED certificates. 34 students and over 375 people attended the ceremony held in Alberta on the Christanna Campus of Southside Virginia Community College including faculty, staff, friends, and family members.
