Events Planned for the Whole Family
NEW Take Home Activity Packs in the Children's Department
Back by popular demand, the Children’s Department has new activity packs available while supplies last. We know our youngest patrons miss the Creative Corner and special programming at the library, so we are bringing the fun to you at home through our Take-Home Activity Packs. These activities are located on the table in the Children’s area near the back entrance of our library. The packs range from craft projects with all of the materials included, to games to make and play at home, to activity sheets to keep children learning and creating. These activities are designed to give your child STEM learning, fine motor skills practice, and a chance to use their creativity.

NEW this week for pickup is a Keepsake Box to decorate at home. Inside the bag, you will find everything you need to make your Keepsake Box unique. You may choose to take home a small container of paint and a paintbrush to add color to your Keepsake Box or skip the painting and add the embellishments in your take-home bag to spruce up your box. Participants will need to provide their own glue.
Celebrate Children's Book Week Next Week
Celebrate National Children’s Book Week with our library November 9-15. This annual event is the longest-running literacy initiative in the U.S. Children’s Book Week is a vehicle to connect kids and adults with books, authors, and illustrators to foster a love of reading. Now more than ever, let's connect with our families and communities through books and reading.

The theme for this year is “Read. Dream. Share.” Our take-home activity pack for next will coincide with Children’s Book Week and we will also have two Live Storytimes on our Facebook page on Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with Miss Julie and Miss Heidi. You do not have to have a Facebook account to view any of our library's virtual programs.

Be thinking of your favorite children’s storybook to READ with a youngster next week, and then help them DREAM up their own story and SHARE it with you through a drawing or acting it out with their toys.

Post a picture of you and your child reading together on social media and use #BookWeek2020atHome. A great way to celebrate Children's Book Week next week and connect with others is to host a video chat with relatives you haven’t seen in a while and have them share a bedtime story with your children.
Upcoming Programs for 6th-12th Grade Youth
Why Middle School and Teen Readers Need the Freedom to Choose the Books They Read
There is a place for the classics and “quality” novels that youth are assigned to read in school or by a well-meaning adult who recommends one of their favorites, but there’s also a place for modern, fun works that young people choose to read on their own. A 2015 study published in The Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults found that self-selection had a statistical impact on adolescents self-perceived reading pleasure.

Society doesn't tell adults to choose more quality books when they grab a romance novel or the next Jack Reacher book, so why do we try to steer young readers away from graphic novels, Star Wars, or zombie apocalypse fiction? Just like adults, tweens and teens enjoy reading romance, adventure, thrillers, and book series with familiar characters.

A “quality” book should be one that they want to read! When youth have access to libraries and the freedom to self-select books, they develop their tastes as a reader. It is a part of their education to decide if they like realistic fiction, historical fiction, or science fiction. They need to learn how to choose a book or author, and trial and error is the best way to learn to find a book they can really connect with. Without that freedom, many will choose not to read at all.

So help your children find time for “fun” reading, beyond what they are assigned for school work, or outside of their Accelerated Reading level or Lexile level. Don’t stop suggesting books you enjoyed in your childhood, but don’t be offended if they choose a different book to read--leave it up to them.
