Welcome (Back) Phil Bossert!
 
We are pleased to announce that Phil Bossert has been appointed as the Acting Executive Director for HAIS. Phil has served HAIS in many different capacities over the past decade, including having been an integral part of the Schools of the Future initiative since 2008. Phil is a respected and accomplished leader within Hawaii's education, technology, and governmental communities. As the former Executive Director & CEO of the High Technology Development Corporation, and the former President of Hawaii Loa College, Phil understands the interplay between Hawaii's educational community, technology, and international relations.  We are incredibly grateful to Phil for his guidance during this transition. 

Robert Landau has begun a new journey as an educational consultant and has launched Two Roads Education. Although it is difficult to lose Robert, we understand his desire to pursue his passion and we wish him well in his future endeavors. Robert can be reached at tworoadsed@gmail.com.

The Yale RULER Program is Coming to Hawai'i! 
In partnership with the Hawai'i Community Foundation, we are pleased to announce that RULER training will be offered in Hawai'i! Marc Brackett, 2016 Schools of the Future Keynote Speaker, will be leading the training along with his team from the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence.  Scholarship Funding is available to HAIS Full Member Schools, as well as to Hawai'i-based public and charter schools, and will be considered on a needs-based, first-come basis. Schools may also apply for travel scholarships, made availble by HCF. (Information will be posted soon on the Funding Application Process).

If you are considering the RULER Program for your school, we recommend attending this free information session to learn more. Hear from St. Andrew's administration and faculty about their experrience with the program and implementation. Hawaii Community Foundation and HAIS staff will also be on hand to answer questions about scholarship opportunities, the application process and the overall timeline.

About RULER
The RULER approach is an outgrowth of decades of research on emotional intelligence conducted by Yale University's Centre for Emotional Intelligence, demonstrating that emotional skills are integral to learning, making sound judgements, maintaining physical and mental health, and achieving success in school and beyond. RULER's sustainable evidence-based approach helps schools to develop emotional literacy in students and all of the stakeholders involved in their education, including school leaders, teachers, support staff, and family members.

Master's Degree in Private School Leadership: Application Period Open
Applications are now available for the Master's Degree Program in Private School Leadership. HAIS and the Educational Foundations Department of the College of Education, of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, jointly offer a master's degree program that focuses on educational leadership in the unique setting of the private school. The program is designed to meet the needs of leaders and aspiring leaders in independent schools. The program's curriculum blends research-based knowledge with the wisdom of experienced private school leaders. 

Cohort VII will commence summer 2018. Students in the PSL-MEd (Private School Leadership - Masters in Education) will complete work in residence for two consecutive summer terms, each five weeks, and engage in field work during the two intervening semesters at their homes schools. The deadline to apply is November 17, 2017.

7th Annual Enrollment Management Event: Sept. 26
The Enrollment Management Association is hosting their annual event at Kamehameha Schools this year, providing professional development opportunities for their members and colleagues in Hawaii.  There will be presentations by  Alisa Evans, Director, Business Development, SSS;  Chad Tew, Founding Principal, Tew & Associates; and  Aimee Gruber, Senior Director of Outreach, EMA.  Attendees are welcome to come to all, or part of, the day. This meeting is especially helpful for  Admission directors and staff;  Financial aid professionals; Heads of school; Business managers/CFOs; Marketing/Communications; and/or Advancement.

Hawai'i Schools Digital Media Grants: Aug. 31
The deadline for applications for 2017/18 Hawai'i Schools Digital Media (HSDM) grants is August 31. Schools may apply for HSDM grants of between $1,000 and $3,000 to support student production of digital video either as part of a classroom curriculum or co-curricular digital media and video clubs. Applications may be submitted online at http://www.hawaii.edu/henc/grant-application-form/Awards will be announced in late September with funding provided in early October. Ho'ala School Announces Phyllis Norton as New Head

T he Ho'ala School Board of Directors has 
announced Phyllis Norton as the new Head of School, effective August 1. She replaces Linda Perry, who retired at the close of the 2016 - 2017 school year after serving as Head since 2009, before which she was an elementary teacher, and the Director of Education.

Phyllis has a Masters of Education, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Phyllis taught at Ho'ala School during the school years 2004 - 2007 and again in 2009 - 2011. 

Most Likely to Succeed's Innovation Week: Sept. 5 - 12
This fall, Most  Likely  to Succeed (MLTS) is hosting MLTS Innovation Week, a celebration of the exciting changes happening in your school communities and the launch of new ways to share and engage.

From September 5 - 12, MLTS will screen worldwide. Audiences can watch via free online broadcast; schools and community hosts can screen the film at no charge; and anyone can pre-order a copy of MLTS for their class, library, school system, or community. MLTS will host virtual panels and Q&As with experts from the movie and other thought leaders in 21st century education. Throughout the week, stories will be featured of the film's impact in classrooms across the country. More details will be announced as September approaches.

2018 Leading Schools of the Future Conference: April 4-6

The 2018 Leading Schools of the Future Conference will take place on April 5 & 6, with a Pre-Conference on the 4th. To be held at the Ala Moana Hotel.

Kids for Wish Kids
This program engages kids of all ages from schools, youth groups, clubs, and organizations to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish® mission. 
Kids and teens create ideas for fundraisers, and then organize and manage their fundraisers from start to finish. In doing so, those heading their projects experience leadership, initiative, and social responsibility, because k ids are responsible for the program; from brainstorming fundraising ideas, to developing a plan of action and then seeing their ideas come to life. Teachers and parents often serve as advisors, but ownership of the project belongs solely to the kids involved.
Make-A-Wish kids are between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 years old. This program provides an avenue for local keiki to support their friends, peers, and relatives who are battling a life-threatening medical condition.

Hawai'i LifeSmarts Statewide Registration Open: Aug. 1
LifeSmarts is a free, national educational program that teaches students critical life skills in five key areas: Personal Finance, Consumer Rights & Responsibilities, Health & Safety, the Environment, and Technology, through online quizzes and in-person competitions.  Teams must consist of 1 adult coach/teacher and at least 4 students, and t he online portion of the competition opens Monday, October 23, 2017. Registration is now open.

PAAC Workshop & Leadership Program: Aug. 24 & Sept. 10
Registration Open for the Club Officer Workshop
This is an opportunity for club officers from different schools to meet each other, exchange best practices, collaborate, and get ready for the new semester with PAAC. Teachers are welcome but attendance is not required.  Students who are not officers are also welcome, but they must please email Jason Shon first. Applications Open for Global Leadership Program
20 high school students (grades 10-12) will be selected to participate in this extended 8-month program, which includes a 4-day leadership camp, two Global Vision Summits, three full-day workshops, and a final reception.  Students selected to be in the cohort are also eligible for scholarships to participate in PAAC study tours. This is an opportunity for students to learn about global issues, explore the impact of those issues on Hawai'i, and contribute to solutions.  Additionally, up to 5 neighbor island students will be selected as McInerny Scholars and receive scholarships that cover airfare to Oahu for all GLP events.

Creative Challenge Art Contest: Aug. 31
Young artists, grades 6 - 8, have the opportunity to have their work published and to receive media attention by competing in this year's  Creative Challenge Art Contest. Participating schools will get the chance to receive giveaways, win prizes, and hear from Legacy of Life Hawai'i - the contest sponsor - about the importance of health, fitness, advocacy,and how organ donation saves lives. At this presentation, artistic expression is encouraged and students are empowered to make a positive difference in the world around them.

Humane Society Offers S ervice Learning Class: Sept. 16

The Hawaiian Humane Society offers the Animal Hero Training Class for Oahu students in grades 6-12 who want to help animals in their community, and need community service hours as part of a school or community-based project. 24th Annual Children and Youth Summit: Oct. 13
The Hawai'i State Legislature's Keiki Caucus will hold the 24th Annual Children and Youth Summit on Friday, October 13, 2017. In addition to an array of breakout sessions, community leaders, business professionals, children and youth will provide a rich and diverse panel discussion.
The participants assist the Legislature in identifying key children and youth issues that need to be addressed in future Legislative Sessions. The Summit Planning Team   would like to hear from children and youth on what kind of discussion topics they would like to be included in this year's summit.

UH Manoa SOEST Open House: Oct. 20 - 21
The UHM School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) Open House will be coming up this fall! Learn about volcanoes, tsunamis, El Niño, planetary exploration, hurricanes, coastal erosion, marine ecosystems, and more. There will be hands-on activities and demonstrations for kids of all ages to enjoy. Meet the scientists who are making the discoveries and tour their state-of-the-art facilities.

This essay, photo, ad video contest is sponsored by the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation. It's open to students K-12 who are current residents of the state of Hawai'i (students may only enter one division).
An entry must identify an existing problem in Hawai'i and offer a thoughtful solution to the problem. Hawai'i STEM Education Survey
 
The  Blue Planet Foundation has created a survey to gather data from Hawai'i schools on the level to which STEM education is occurring in the state. The information you provide will help them to better understand not only this, but also where additional support can be offered, and where efforts need to be focused. Ralph Fletcher & The Joy of Writing Workshop: Sept. 1

Ka Hui Heluhelu, The International Literacy Association State Council, presents this workshop hosted by Ralph Fletcher, and explores the contents of his new book, Joy Write. Fletcher is a reader, writer, learner, and teacher; he has authored children's books in different genres, as well as books for writing teachers. His new book discusses how to bring the love and joy of writing back into the classroom. The landscape for writing instruction has changed in recent years, and many students are struggling in this new world. Our rush to embrace the standards has resulted in less choice and more academic writing. This workshop will look at how to create a more joyful writing classroom, and bring back essential conditions where young writers can thrive and develop a self-image: I am a writer.

Ecology Project International Teacher Fellowships: Sept. 1
Ecology Project International (EPI), an international education and conservation nonprofit, has just opened the application period for their 2018 Teacher Fellowships,  which will take place in  Costa   Rica Baja  California Sur, and Yellowstone National Park. These are 8-day professional development opportunities geared toward high school and college-level educators interested in experiential education and conservation. All costs are covered by EPI save a $350 program fee and the participant's airfare to the program site.
Educators can review the programs' focus areas, watch a promo video, and submit an application via their website The application will close on September 1st.

UH Manoa High School  Counselor's  Workshop: Sept. 8

Each fall, the UH Mānoa Office of Admissions hosts the annual High School Counselors Workshop for Hawaiʻi high school counselors who work with juniors and seniors. This  free  event includes a resource fair, tours, important information, and sessions showcasing various opportunities at UH Mānoa. The goal of this workshop is to update local counselors about the latest at Mānoa so their students can make informed decisions when choosing colleges.

Annual Non Profit Organizations One-Day Seminar: Sept. 22
Chaminade University of Honolulu is hosting its 14th Annual Nonprofit Organizations One-Day Seminar on September 22, 2017 at the Pagoda Hotel in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
The seminar will provide information on current issues and changing requirements that affect nonprofits, and provide insights that could help organizations deal with the unique challenges facing them today. Nonprofits can get caught up on new rules; experts will guide attendees through tax-exempt compliance, and review the categories and governing instruments for tax-exempt organizations. They will also update attendees on new laws, which protect a nonprofit organization's status, the audit accounting standard, use of tax-exempt entities, and strategies for maintaining a tax-exempt status.
Registration fee is $199 per person if registering by August 31, 2017; thereafter is $249.00 per person.  HAIS is being offered a discount rate; please contact Megan Polak for the promo code.

Ceeds of Peace Workshop Series: Sept. 30, Dec. 9, Feb. 10
Online registration for the Ceeds of Peace 2017-18 Workshop Series, to be held on Oahu over three consecutive dates, is now open.  There are 3 separate, in-person events that include two learning Workshops and one celebratory Share-Out. Attendees will hear from Ceeds of Peace Co-Founders  Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng and Dr. Kerrie Urosevich , as well as a variety of adult and youth presenters. This Workshop Series is designed for all adults who interact with children and youth; parents, caregivers, teachers, counselors, coaches, therapists, community youth workers. There will be a trained Ceeds of Peace Facilitator that will guide attendees during their participation and help craft a Peace Action Plan.  Ceeds of Peace is also offered as a for-credit PD course for select Hawai'i DOE teachers and counselors, whose attendance at all 3 events is required (please call or email for information).
