CNNH Parent Champion Advocates for Chemical Safety...for Neurological Health
Law Passes to Ensure
Scrutiny
of Chemicals Used in Household Products
On June 22nd, President Barack Obama signed into law The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act!! This law calls for the review of chemicals currently found in household products and for increased scrutiny over new chemicals before entering the marketplace, in addition to protecting vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women. Senator Frank Lautenberg initiated the legislation - which replaces the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 - prior to his death in 2013.

The staff at CNNH are particularly excited and proud of this law because it was championed, in part, by a CNNH parent, Lisa Huguenin, Ph.D.
Dr. Huguenin holds a doctorate in Environmental Science and Human Exposure Assessment, but she advocated for this law on behalf of her son, Harrison.

The CNNH Patient Experience Just Got Better
Patient Care Services Representative Now Available
CNNH is committed to providing outstanding customer care and satisfaction as part of the overall patient experience. To ensure that each patient has access to a representative for administrative questions and concerns, a Patient Care Services representative has been appointed. Kathleen Nace, who some may know as the Director of Creative Arts Services and a Neurologic Music Therapist, will now also support patients in administrative matters.

CNNH Parent/Patient Advisory Committee
Group Comes Together to Understand Patients' Needs and Concerns
A group of parents/patients gathered for the first CNNH Parent/Patient Advisory Committee meeting this past August. The group, currently composed of parents of older and younger patients with a variety of diagnoses, gathered to discuss ways that patients and their families might support one another and strengthen the CNNH patient community.
A survey will be sent to all CNNH patients to gauge their interest in some of the ideas discussed. If you are a patient, please keep a look out for the communication and share your thoughts with the committee.

The Clinical Research Center

Autism Study
CRCNJ is now enrolling patients in
blüm, a Phase III clinical trial for CM-AT, a potential first-in-class treatment for autism. CM-AT is developed by Curemark
, LLC, a drug research and development company focused on the treatment of neurological diseases.
CM-AT is based on Curemark's recent research that showed enzyme deficiencies in some autistic children result in an inability to digest protein. The inability to digest protein affects the availability of amino acids, the building blocks of chemicals essential for brain function.
CRCNJ is one of over 20 sites across the country conducting the blüm
Phase III clinical trial of CM-AT in autism.

CNNH had two abstract
submissions accepted for presentation at the 14th International Child Neurology Congress, held in May in Amsterdam. The first was based on data from the Governor's Council for Medical Research and Treatment of Autism research study:
"Buccal swab analysis reveals a high prevalence of mitochondrial respiratory chain defects in children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders"
Authors are Mark Mintz, Laura Szklarski, and Pnina Mintz of CNNH, and Michael J. Goldenthal, Agustin Legido, and Shirish Damle of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, Philadelphia, PA.
The second was based on data we have collected in describing clinical manifestations and potential treatments of molecular defects in calcium transport into and out of cells, entitled:
"Calcium Channelopathies: Genotype-Phenotype Correlations to Neuropsychiatric Disorders"
Authors are Mark Mintz of CNNH, Julia Fruh, University of Basel, Switzerland, and Richard Boles and Christine Stanley of Courtagen Life Sciences, Woburn, MA.
