Merry Christmas and happy New Year greeting card with copy-space.Many snowmen standing in winter Christmas landscape.Winter background
Greetings Eagle Chapter Members and Friends!

And a belated - Merry Christmas! The new year is almost here and we have been planning two special events to kick off our 2018 calendar.  As many of you know, 2018 commemorates the 50th anniversary of Captain Reginald V. Maisey's death during the Tet Offensive while  under enemy fire at Bien Hoa Air Base then in the Republic of Vietnam. The Maisey Building at Joint Base Anacostia Bolling Washington DC is named in his honor. 50th anniversary events are being held by the Security Forces of Joint Base San Antonio TX on Jan 30th and 31st to commemorate the Security Forces defense of Air Force Air Bases during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam. We are extending the activities of that 50th anniversary and commemoration with two events planned here for Feb 1.  Please see the details below.
As a reminder, next month (January) is the final month of our annual donation drive.  For those of you who make charitable deductions on your tax returns, there are just a few more days left to make your tax deductible donations to Eagle Chapter. We hope you will consider our chapter. We are a 501(c)(19) IRS-approved Veterans Services Non-profit Organization. So your donations are tax deductible.
Our November donations were a sight greater than the $25.00 that was donated in October, the first month of our drive. Six donors pitched in to give us a combined donation for the month of November of $650 which is good and we appreciate every cent; but, this was not as good as we did in 2016 in the month of November.  So, again, if you like the work that we do and you want the chapter to continue to thrive, please consider donating. I will not bother you for the rest of the  year once this campaign period is over.
Thank-you for your continuing support.  I look forward to seeing you at a chapter event in 2018.

Very respectfully,

Lee

Christmas Wreaths Placed at Arlington  - Our Final Project for 2017 - A Tribute to the Families of the Fallen
SFKIA-A1CLeeBernardChavisXmas2017

Our final project of the year, placing wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, provides an additional observance for the 17 internments that we visited for 2017. Our visit occurs the day after Wreaths Across America (WAA) lays wreaths at the 300,000 gravesites in Arlington. On Saturday, December 16 WAA along with 75,000 volunteers (a record) placed a wreath on every single gravesite.  Unlike earlier years when not all graves were covered, recent visits by Wreaths Across America have been very well funded to make sure that all graves at Arlington have a wreath.

So our visit is both an annual visit to every grave on behalf of the family members. We know you can't be here. So, we hope that our visit provides some comfort.  We add an extra wreath to the headstone if the grave has multiple resting places as in the case of the group burial of Security Forces Killed in Action (SFKIA) members, Tech Sergeant Jason Norton and Staff Sergeant Brian McElroy or multiple family members, such as Lt General Howard W. Leaf and his son, Patrick. At the SFKIA group burial grave, we place an additional wreath on the front and for family members, we place a wreath on the rear of the grave beneath the family member's name where it appears on the tombstone.

A few years ago while attending an AF Security Forces Association annual meeting in Oklahoma, Captain (Retired) Cutis Wallace (who lives in FL) asked that we include his wife, Linda, in our visits to Arlington. When I saw that she was interred in the columbarium and not a grave, we needed a different strategy.  Instead of a wreath, we place a Christmas tree ornament to place on her spot.  See our special ornament above.

We have more photos on our Events page on our website.  I'll be adding more as time permits. Click here to go to that page.

50th Anniversary Tet Offensive and Commemoration Events in Honor of Captain Reginald V. Maisey, JR. and SF Defense During of Vietnam - Jan 30 - Feb 1
Tet Offensive Battles 1968
Outnumbered 5 to 1 USAF Defends - Philadelphia Inquirer
January 31, 2018, marks the 50th anniversary of the Tet Offensive where 50 years earlier, in 1968 Air Force Defenders repelled an overwhelming force of North Vietnam Regular Army and Viet Cong that attempted to over-run air bases in the South of Vietnam.  To commemorate this anniversary, Eagle Chapter will join SF defenders at Joint Base San Antonio Texas in recognizing this important observance. The SF at Joint Base San Antonio TX have events on January 30 and 31.  Eagle Chapter has delayed our usual Jan 31 wreath laying event to February 1 and added a powerful luncheon at the Pentagon to extend the recognition of our USAF Security Police, now Security Forces, in these great battles. Please RSVP below:

-  0800 - Wreath Laying - Maisey Building JBAB Washington DC. Starting at 8AM/0800 at the Maisey Building, an as yet to be named AFDW command staff representative, Mr. Tim Gerald, the AFDW Director of Security Forces, and Mr. Jim Saulnier, Vice President AFSFA, will lay a wreath in honor of Captain Reginald V. Maisey JR. Major General Jacobson, AFDW Commander, has an unavoidable conflict and could not attend. The event will include remarks. We have an additional position for Col (Ret) Strones/or a Maisey family member to participate in the wreath laying. Colonel Strones was Captain Maisey's best friend. He also participated in defending Bien Hoa Air Base as an SF Captain. Click here to see the article - Philadelphia Inquirer "From the top of a water tower to the middle of the battlefield, Bob Connor and Martin Strones had front-row seats at Bien Hoa Air Base to one of the major turning points of the Vietnam War." Col Strones was awarded the Silver Star.  We are honored to have him (tentatively) here and at the luncheon below (confirmed).  We have extended a BOLO through the Vietnam Security Police Association to aid in contacting Reginald V. Maisey, III, Captain Maisey's son, and other Maisey family members to participate in the wreath laying. Eagle Chapter will provide the wreath and refreshments.    If you have a way to contact them, please contact our chairman by clicking here

Please RSVP here if planning to attend the Bolling Wreath Laying
Please RSVP here if you plan to attend the Maisey Building (110 Luke Street SW) Wreath Laying at Joint Base Anacostia Bolling.

-  1300 - Eagle Chapter will host a luncheon at the Pentagon Conference Center Room B10 where Colonel (Retired) Marty Strones will present a two-part  presentation - one showing the NVA/Viet Cong plans to capture Bien Hoa Air Base. Earlier this year when he helped the government of Vietnam locate the spot where the mass grave was located, their military were so appreciative that they shared their plans to capture Bien Hoa.  He will present his ordeal that aided in the recovery of their casualties.  Colonel Strones presented a similar presentation on behalf of Brigadier General Tullos, Air Force Top Cop, at the USAF SF Symposium. Since then he's updated his presentation to provide even more details to our luncheon attendees.  We would also host members of the Maisey family - if we can find them.  Please click below if you will attend the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Luncheon at the Pentagon.

Note: Colonel Strones' presentation is a technical, combat discussion that provides an unvarnished presentation about a combat environment.  It may not be suitable for all attendees.

Please RSVP here if planning to attend the Pentagon Luncheon

Defenders of Tet - Security Forces of Joint Base San Antonio Texas are holding several events on January 30 and 31 to honor Security Police Vietnam Veterans. Please see their invitation below and click here to contact them directly for any questions.

Eagle Chapter 20th Anniversary US Air Force Security Forces Artifacts Offered to Be On Loan Security Forces Museum
President Trump (and Melania) Congratulates USAF SF For those of you who did not see the Commander In Chief's Congratulatory Letter in our last issue, today, I received verbal approval from the White House Communications Staff to print (nicely) the President's letter of congratulations as an artifact with the intent to provide it for display at the Air Force Security Forces Museum, should the museum decide to accept it.   In the meantime, the board will determine which of the artifacts that we'll send to accompany the letter.  I have stacks of raffle tickets that I don't need.  :-) My idea is they would like to have representative examples  showing how the chapters and other units celebrated the 20th anniversary of our Air Force Security Forces in 2017.   We have some other pretty cool stuff that we can provide.
The President's letter can be read by clicking here.

Michael Crayton - Eagle Chapter, Vice Chairman Public Information (VCPI)

First a shameless plug - as some of you know, I'm a real estate agent/investor.  Last year, when I helped Mike and Karen into their new home in Woodbridge VA, I promised Karen that I wouldn't bother him about the association for a  year.  They had just moved from FL and I knew that his focus must be on his new job - plus making sure that Karen is acclimated to VA.

That year is now up and wow - Michael has come on board like gangbusters!  His singular role right now on our board is to create and submit articles to the AF Security Forces Magazine (old Tiger Flight) so that the rest of the word will know that there is an Eagle Chapter.  He already has submitted his first article and it has been accepted for the March-April edition of the Air Force Security Forces Association Magazine.  Plus, he just submitted his second article to me today! Again - Wow!  Thank-you Mike (and Karen).

If Mike looks familiar, you'll see his image on a photo that we took last year when he and his wife attended an Eagle Chapter luncheon where we bid farewell to Brig General Jamerson. Thanks to Karl Blinkinsop, Vice Chair Eagle's AFDW Wing,  for introducing Mike to Eagle Chapter.

We still are in dire need for a leader at Langley and Dover. Just point anyone to read our chapter articles from 2017 on our Resources page.  They can give me a holler if there is interest and they are ready to serve (work).
Be On The Look-Out - Reginald V. Maisey, III

In the photo above, we hosted the Maisey family to a dinner the night that we co-hosted the rededication of the Maisey Building at Bolling Air Force Base in 2008.  This photo shows Reginald V. Maisey, III, - Captain Maisey's son, (second from left), his wife and two children (Reggie's grandkids).  We would like to contact Reg III and his family to invite them  to participate in the activities that we are holding on Feb 1 in honor of his dad and showing them that our Air Force still has them in our thoughts.

Please contact me or Karl if you know anyone that might know where they may be.  We would like to extend them an invitation.

January 9 - Law Enforcement Appreciation Day
January 9, 2018 is the day that we set aside, nationally,  to show our support to our Law Enforcement Officers. Eagle Chapter is developing our response to show our support to SF and other police units to let them know that we appreciate them!

Each day, our police serve to protect citizens and Jan 9 is a special da for us to say THANK YOU!

We join Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) and hope that many of you will follow suit. COPS has outlined several ways whereby we can demonstrate our support:
  • Fly a blue ribbon on your car antenna, mailbox, motorcycle, or anywhere it can be attached
  • Shine blue lights from your home
  • Wear blue all day
  • Send a card or have local schools make cards for the local department
  • Host or attend a local rally in support of law enforcement
  • Share your support on social media and change your profile picture to this image (see above)
  • Most importantly, if you see a Police Officer, THANK a Police Officer

The 2018 COPS flyer is available by clicking here.

Colonel (Retired) Samuel E. Stocks - Final Guardmount - Internment @ ANC Feb 28 at 1500
I regret to inform you of the passing of Colonel (Retired) Samuel E. Stocks.  Sam's end of watch was November 23, 2017 in New Braunfels, TX.

Sam was a charter member of the AF Security Police Association and was one of the founding members of Eagle Chapter when we formed up in 2003. At the time, he worked for a defense contractor and lived in Alexandria VA.

I first knew of Sam when he was dual-hatted as the top cop at HQ Air Mobility Command and HQ TRANSCOM in 1988. I was then a Captain working only a few blocks away at HQ Air Force Communications Command.

Col Stocks will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on February 28, 2018 at 1500 hours. I will see you there.

Thanks to Phil Henning, Chair Gateway Chapter (Scott AFB IL area), AF Security Forces Association for sharing Sam's obituary. Click here to read.

Legendary Pilot Who Flew Final Combat Mission Of WWII Dies At 93 - His Last Message

World War II Figher Pilot, Captain Jerry Yellin, recently died at the age of 93 from lung cancer.  Jerry Yellin was the national spokesman for "Keep The Spirit of '45 Alive". He would dress in period uniform and was very active in helping a much younger generation understand the lessons of World War II. Prior to his death, he wrote an article that the organization calls his Last Message.

You can find Capt Yellin's "Last Message" - his message to America by clicking here.

On Memorial Day 2013, I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry at the Air Force Memorial.  He was on hand with the Keep the Spirit of 45 Alive crew. I presented him with an Eagle Chapter Coin.  You can see more photos of our 2013 Memorial Day observance at our chapter website.

Thanks to Eagle Member Alan Minear for passing on this information about Jerry - one of the last of the greatest generation.

A Belated Merry Christmas From the Chambers Family
A Belated Merry Christmas from the Chambers Family

In August, I did something that I've not done since the '80s - take a full two week vacation - no phone calls, no emails, no conference calls - two full weeks off. Above, I'm sharing some of the mementoes of those two weeks. The first week - the theme parks in FL. The second week, Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas 7 day cruise.  After a week of Disney and other theme parks, I need a week vacation. So the cruise was just the ticket. Though our first time on a Segway (they made us watch a safety film and we had to negotiate an obstacle course before riding on the streets of Cozumel), the dolphin swim was the best ride.  The best unnatural and most thrilling adventure - riding the Banshee at Walt Disney's Avatar Adventure in the Animal Kingdom.  Great - but not worth waiting through a three hour line the second time.  The awesome Internet - I had my security cameras set up and every time the grass cutters cut the grass, I'd get an alert and video -  even while in the ocean aboard ship.  I have so much going on that it'll probably be another few years before another two-week vacation - but not 30! :-)

My health - A biopsy in December 2014, revealed that  I had an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Since completing my radiation therapy in May 2015, I've been seeing my oncologist every six months.  Great news - there have been no signs of cancer. PSA readings are undetectable.  At my visit last month, he told me to come back in a year instead of six months later.  I feel so blessed!  When I told my 98 year old Aunt Geneva about my cancer, she says - everyone has something.  :-)  She should know.

In closing, again please consider donating to our favorite cause - Eagle Chapter AF Security Forces Association! Every little bit helps us.

Have a Happy New Year and I hope to see you at an Eagle Chapter event in 2018!
