The Port of Brownsville Leads the Rio Grande Valley’s Economy

The Port of Brownsville is a diverse economic engine serving industries on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border thanks to its strategic location and efficient logistical network.

The future of the Rio Grande Valley’s economy is anchored at the Port of Brownsville. As the only deepwater seaport located on the U.S.-Mexico border, the port’s influence extends beyond Texas.


The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Annual Report features the port’s ascension to 50th position among 150 U.S. maritime ports for waterborne cargo. In 2022, the port handled 9.1 million tons of cargo, up from 8.9 million tons in 2021, moving from 55th to 50th place.

The port’s comprehensive logistical network comprised of rail, trucking lines, vessel and barge services and pipeline connectivity are key to the successful transportation of goods as the port accommodates a variety of industries.


In 2023, total cargo tonnage at the port increased 17 percent to 17.8 million tons, with 12.3 million tons of waterborne and 5.5 million tons of non-waterborne cargo. The increased cargo activity has resulted in increased operating revenues as well. For the fourth consecutive year, the operating revenues at the port surpassed the $30 million mark, exceeding $41 million in 2023.

48,000 Tons Strong

Recently, Schaefer Stevedoring raised the bar, efficiently unloading 48,000 metric tons of pig iron from the M/V SSI Majesty at the Port of Brownsville.


This essential cargo fuels the steel industry, supporting production for a variety of industries.

Community Spotlight

Students from the Brownsville Independent School District's Career & Technical Education (CTE) program visited the Port of Brownsville on Oct. 31, to learn about career pathways that drive growth in the region.



The visit included a tour of SA Recycling's facility and presentations from the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation and Port of Brownsville Director of Cargo Services & Foreign Trade Zone Tony Rodriguez.


These future leaders explored how CTE’s commitment to workforce readiness aligns with the port's mission of creating good-paying jobs for the Rio Grande Valley.

Annual Dock Dash Draws Crowds

The Port of Brownsville held its annual 5K1M Dock Dash walk/run event on Oct. 12, attracting hundreds of participants from throughout the Rio Grande Valley and Northern Mexico.


Free and open to the public, the event promotes healthy living through fun and fitness.

Participants earned custom Dock Dash medals and commemorative t-shirts.


Brownsville & Rio Grande International Railway/OmniTRAX was the gold sponsor of the event and Gulf Stream Marine, Rio Grande LNG, Bechtel Corporation, Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority, and T-Mobile Port Isabel served as hydration sponsors.

Glenfarne Energy Appoints Kiewit as EPC Contractor for Texas LNG Project

Texas LNG Brownsville LLC , a four million tonnes per annum liquefied natural gas (LNG) proposed export terminal to be constructed in the Port of Brownsville, a subsidiary of Glenfarne Energy Transition, LLC , has selected Kiewit, through its subsidiaries Kiewit Engineering Group Inc. and Kiewit Energy Group Inc., to lead the engineering, procurement, and construction of Texas LNG under a lump-sum turnkey structure.
