February 9 - February 18, 2024 | |
Dear People of Saint Paul's,
On Wednesday it will be my privilege to invite you, in the name of the Church, to a holy Lent in preparation for the Paschal Feast at Easter. Those Ash Wednesday liturgies at noon and 7:00 PM are the center of a remarkable week at the church. This Sunday at 11:00 we'll celebrate the sacrament of Holy Baptism and will enjoy a chili fundraiser immediately after the service. The final session this year of "Women of the Bible" will meet in the Berlin Room at 9:30. Then on Monday night at 7:00 Saint Paul's is hosting the inaugural convocational Absalom Jones service. Absalom Jones was the first African American ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church (ordained a priest in Philadelphia in 1804). Join us for this service that will include leadership from churches across the Convocation. On Tuesday night we'll eat pancakes and burn palms for Shrove Tuesday. And then on Sunday, Bishop Logue will be with us at 8:00 and 11:00, confirming and receiving folks at 11:00. It's not too late to talk with me about Confirmation or Reception, but if we aren't already talking about it, it is definitely time for us to be in conversation.
When you add in our regular shift at the soup kitchen on Feb. 17 and all of our regular programming during the week, that's a lot of activity for eight days, perhaps more than some people can do. That's okay. The idea is not to run anyone ragged with daily events at the church, but together as the Body of Christ to offer opportunities to each other and to our community to gather in worship, fellowship, learning, and service. Thanks be to God for good work to do and good siblings in Christ with whom to do it.

On-line Formation Offering
The Good Life
Tuesdays; February 20 - March 19
7:30–8:30 PM
This Lent, the people of the Diocese of Georgia will consider what makes a life fulfilling and meaningful through the lens of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. We begin the 1Book1Diocese Selection: The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness by Robert Waldinger, MD and Marc Schulz, PhD Tuesday February 20.
The Good Life is not an intentionally theological text, but the book does open up topics that a church group can discuss with easy connections between this study and our faith in Jesus.
As the authors write, "The good life is joyful ... and challenging. Full of love, but also pain." And for those of us who follow Jesus, the good life is one in which loving God and loving your neighbor as yourself is central. We will see how these two greatest commandments connect to the key insights of the study that is the heart of this book.
Books are available in the Narthex on Sunday and in the parish office during the week.
