Family Promise at Grace: May 5-11
When we hosted Family Promise at Grace in March, our week coincided with a BBQ fundraiser for Mercy House. Thursday evening, Walker Stockley had his full smoker setup in our parking lot, prepping food for this cause. This work caught the eye of one of our younger guests, C. C works in the fast food industry and offered to help Frances and Walker get things set up. The Stockleys then invited C to join them in the food prep, where they introduced C to the process of "pumping butts" - injecting the pork with apple cider and Walker's special blend of ingredients before the smoking begins.
The next evening, C came up to the kitchen and volunteered to help pull the pork that had smoked all day. And then, Saturday, C came by and helped with the fundraiser, spending his whole day with the Stockleys as they supported Mercy House.
Frances and Walker had a great time getting to know C and sharing their expertise with him. As they talked, they learned that C hopes to work in a more upscale restaurant, and his ultimate goal is to one day own his own restaurant. They were both so impressed with C's work ethic, commitment, and plans for the future, and were glad to spend those many hours with him in a shared love of good food.

Frances and Walker are two of our dedicated Family Promise volunteers, and this is just one of their stories of how Family Promise has been meaningful in their lives. You, too, can be part of these stories and connections with Family Promise! Our next hosting week is May 5-11, and we have opportunities to share meals, spend evening time together, and to stay the night.
