National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month! With our partner Autism Alliance of Canada, we are proud to support inclusive employment through our Ready, Willing and Able (RWA) employment initiative. Since its inception in 2014, RWA has helped over 4,500 people with an intellectual disability and/or on the autism spectrum find and obtain gainful employment in the labour market.

On October 24th, RWA hosted a webinar, "Achieving Success through Inclusive and Competitive Employment." You can access the recording of the event below. Our work is not finished until people with intellectual disabilities have the same rate of employment as everyone else in Canada.

Inclusive Education Canada Urges Immediate Action Following Quebec Report on Seclusion and Isolation Rooms in Schools

A Quebec report was recently released, titled "Control Measures in Quebec Schools, Les Mesures de Contrôle dans Les Écoles du Québec," which brings to light alarming revelations about the use of isolation and seclusion rooms for students with disabilities in the province. We applaud the efforts of our Quebec federation member, Société québécoise de la déficience intellectuelle (SQDI).

It is deeply concerning that Ministries of Education in provinces and territories do not hold schools and local education authorities accountable for these practices. Inclusion Canada and Inclusive Education Canada stand firmly alongside the agencies responsible for producing this critical report and call for immediate, decisive action to address this issue.

Inclusion Canada demands maximum sentencing in prolonged group home sexual abuse case

Inclusion Canada responded to the sentencing hearing in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, of a former care home worker who pled guilty to sexually abusing vulnerable residents over 17 years.

The justice system must take all necessary steps to ensure justice is not only done, but seen to be done. We believe that the sentence must reflect the egregious nature of the crimes and the number of victims repeatedly harmed over such an extensive period of time.

The abuse endured by the individuals living in Shepherd’s Villa must be seen as indicative of a more widespread problem affecting vulnerable adults required to live in segregated and congregated facilities across the country.

October is RDSP Awareness Month!

We want to help raise awareness about the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). The RDSP is the first savings plan designed specifically for people with disabilities.

By opening an RDSP, you can get free money from the government. This money can be a big help for you or your family member to save for the future.

We encourage all to learn more about the RDSP and take advantage of it. Read our plain language blog post!
