Trot for the Turkeys
by Elaine French and Jerry Smith
“There is no habit you will value so much as that of walking far without fatigue.”
Thomas Jefferson

In 2022, we signed up for the Tofurky Trot. The course was an easy 5K (3.1 miles) with both runners and walkers. It was a lovely day, and we enjoyed talking with other plant-eaters as we strolled from Oaks Park through the beautiful neighborhoods near Sellwood Park. All ages were represented, including couples with baby strollers, and there were even some participants wearing costumes. It was such a festive atmosphere! Food was available for finishers. Afterward, Seth Tibbott, the founder of Tofurky, gave us these nice “Chase Compassion” shirts; maybe for being the oldest walkers at the event at the ages of 76 and 79?
This year we are two years older and look forward to walking across the Sellwood Bridge, which is new for us. The Tofurky Trot puts us in a good frame of mind before we spend the day with our meat-eating family; of course we bring our own meals.
We still feel quite fit, and we only get stiff when we sit for too long. We hope to be walking for years to come!

Chase Compassion Together, 2024

Join the Movement: Support Farm Sanctuaries and Change the World!
| |
Since we began, Northwest VEG has championed farm animal sanctuaries as havens embodying our vegan values. These sanctuaries not only rescue animals from factory farms, but also ignite compassion by revealing their residents’ unique personalities and intelligence. More than just shelters, our local sanctuaries are living classrooms, educating the public about the harsh realities of industrial animal agriculture and its impact on animals, the environment, and our health. They empower us to make conscientious choices and build a more compassionate world. By fostering community and providing opportunities to connect with animals, sanctuaries inspire a ripple effect of awareness, leading to a just and sustainable future for all.
In 2013, Tofurky and NW VEG cosponsored our first Tofurky Trot, an alternative Thanksgiving fundraiser event to channel public support for the increasing number of farm animal sanctuaries around us. Together we partner to demonstrate our shared advocacy for farm animals, diet change, and cultural change to stop the animal agriculture industry. We hope that you will join with us in celebrating this evolving movement to show Oregon farm sanctuaries our sincere support.

Compassionate Living Festival Success
Thanks to all who attended, volunteered and supported

Hundreds of people filled Norse Hall on September 28 for the Compassionate Living Festival—our first (mini) VegFest in five years. With more than 50 vendors, celebrated speakers, cooking demonstrations, vegan food, and kids’ activities with the Vegan Scouts, the event had all the features of past VegFests. Many of the food and beverage vendors had delicious samples for guests to try, and both savory and sweet dishes were available for purchase. With so many speakers, vendors, and other activities to choose from, some people had challenges deciding which talk or activity they wanted to attend. Plus, with dozens of volunteers helping out, the event went a long way to rebuilding our volunteer network and membership, hard hit during the COVID pandemic.
For those who missed a talk or could not attend, we will be posting videos of many of the talks in the coming months as our volunteers finish editing them. They will be posted on both our YouTube channel and our Video Presentations webpage where you can also find videos of our many presentations from past VegFests, Health Conferences, and other speaker events and activities.
Many thanks to Alexandra Huff and Lauren Hill for leading the planning for the event, to Chelsea Davis/Veggies Do It Better Events for partnering with us to put this on, to our main sponsors Dill Ward Real Estate Group (platinum sponsor), Prime Roots and Hairodactyl (gold sponsors), and The Better Bar, Savvy Frugal Vegan, and Camellia Pistrina (silver sponsors) for their support. Special thanks too to the dozens of volunteers who helped plan, set up, and staff this event under the welcomed guidance of Deanna Cintas. It was a huge effort that has really helped Northwest VEG rebuild an active place in our community.
