THE BEGINNINGS

You have to start somewhere.

For Gervasio, it was hunting rats with a BB gun in his native Mexico. Then it was spearfishing for many years (“hunting underwater”). Then several bow hunting trips. Finally, when he realized that what he really enjoyed was the adventure, he also became an expert with rifle and embraced all forms of hunting with gusto.

For Eduardo, it was doves and ducks with a shotgun to start. Then, in 2001, the brothers went on a big game hunt together. It was to Africa. They enjoyed hunting together so much, that they kept at it for yeas and on countless adventures. Eventually they achieved their North American Grand Slams with consecutive numbers 1331 and 1332 and finished their Ovis and Capra World Slams the same year.

Forest Sitatunga - Gabon

FAVORITE HUNTS

Mountain hunting quickly became Gervasio’s passion. He says: “It starts with preparation for physical and mental hardships. Proficiency as a marksman and familiarization with your weapon is a must. The adventure is non-stop and the feeling of accomplishment is without equal.”

For Eduardo: “My favorite hunts are for Buffalo, the Spiral Horns of Africa, Mule and Coues Deer in Sonora, and any mountain species.” In fact, he has collected all 26 of the huntable African Spiral Horn species plus the 9 categories of Spiral Horns 3 times.

Laristan Sheep - Iran

Tiang & Northern Grant's - Ethiopia

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF 2001/2002 TO THE NEGRETES

As noted, 2001 was the year the brothers hunted together for the first time as well as Africa for the first time. Numerous hunts quickly followed. And then the mountain hunting started. Eduardo remembers taking his first Ovis species (a Dall sheep) in August 2002 and his first  Capra species (a Gredos Ibex) in November 2002. Almost all of their early big game hunts were together. Eduardo says: “Now my hunting partner is my son, Eduardo. He is a great hunter and I enjoy more watching him hunt, than hunting myself.

WHEN HUNTING TOGETHER …

When hunting together, how do you avoid shooting priority conflicts? You could change the rules daily or by alternating opportunities or by flipping a coin. Eduardo and Gervasio have been happy through the years with one never-changing rule: If only one trophy presents itself, Eduardo gets the shot. If more than one, then Gervasio gets to choose and shoot first.

NEXT QUARTER, ANOTHER ELITE HUNTER WILL BE PROFILED. WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT OUR SELECTION COMMITTEE IS COMPOSED OF RENOWNED HUNTERS: ED YATES, REX BAKER, and RENEE SNIDER.
