The Joshi Family will be providing a Holiday & Thank You lunch on December 13, 2021 at 11:00 AM in honor of our community and care for Pheroze. We will be ordering box lunches for you all to pick-up, post-Seminar Series.

The conference room, collaboration room, and oval office will be available as eating spaces. Please maintain 6' apart while consuming your meal. We look forward to seeing you all there!

NIH UNITE Listening Sessions

Beginning on December 1, the NIH UNITE Committee kicked off a listening sessions tour with external stakeholders who work and serve in diverse settings. During these sessions, participants will discuss equity, inclusion, and structural racism within the biomedical enterprise.

Sessions available for the following groups:

Foundations and Professional Societies
Tribal Communities and Organizations
Faith-Based Organizations and Houses of Worship

Rainin Onsite Service - 12/21/21

Please note, the annual onsite PM service of TC Labs pipets has been scheduled for Tuesday, 12/21. Most of the pipets will be removed from the TC Labs on Monday, 12/20 to prepare them for the PM service. There will be a limited number of pipets left in the TC labs.

Campus Safety and Holiday Security

Over the past 2-months, there have been several reports of on-campus auto burglaries; vandalized vehicles; attempted bike thefts, and a car-fire that resulted from the vehicle being driven into the staircase of one of the campus buildings.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, and Sheriff's Deputies were able to capture the individuals involved in these incidents.

Increased campus patrols will be conducted to deter loitering and suspicious activity, and personal safety escorts are provided 24/7, by calling 415-206-8062 (x68063). Please provide a 20-minute lead time for escort appointments.

Traditionally, during the standard time-change and the holiday season, crime increases. Thieves prey on pedestrians walking alone, and vehicles left unattended with packages or personal belongings visibly inside. Most of these crimes are crimes of opportunity, which in many cases can be avoided.

Facing racism depletes young adults' mental health

Making the transition to adulthood can be full of challenges. A new study finds that the effects of discrimination can cause severe mental health damage to the already-struggling young adult age group.

The study from researchers at UCLA found that young adults who endure frequent interpersonal discrimination based on race, sex or physical appearance are at greater risk of mental health issues than those who don't. The authors analyzed data from a 10-year survey and found that people ages 18 to 28 who experienced consistent short- or long-term discrimination are 25 percent more likely to experience psychological distress, to be diagnosed with a mental illness or to report excessive drug use."

Award to honor Pheroze Joshi

DEM and the Joshi family would like to establish an award in honor of Pheroze. Additional details are being worked out with the family.

RAB Document Management

January-March 2022 will be the document management planning period for the move to the RAB. The admin team can assist labs in coordinating, shredding, scanning, and recycling documents. Labs need to prepare a report for the number of documents they need scanned, shredded, recycled, or moved.

Sample Management

We will not be proceeding with ModuleBio. Alternatives are being researched.

Digital Lab Notebooks

The majority of our labs that use online lab notebooks are using Benchling. The admin team will reach out to IT and Benchling to make an inquiry on the Division's behalf.
