Trustee Position Open

JOB TITLE: Library Trustee

ACCOUNTABLE TO: The taxpayers and the people served by the library


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Establishes policies and long-term goals for the library; oversees the general operation of the library; initiates and oversees the budget process; promotes and advocates for the library in the community; and, if applicable, hires the library director and fiscal officer


Attends all board meetings and participates appropriately:

-prepares for board meetings by reading board minutes and other materials sent out before the board meeting

-serves on committees as required

-lends expertise and leadership to the board for the good of the library


Establishes and abides by clear by-laws which outline operating procedures

Establishes library policies and reviews them on a regular basis, updating as needed

Strives for adequate funding levels for library operations and maintains a clear picture of the library's financial situation


-assists in budget preparation

-represents the library at local budget hearings

-requests funding from outside sources when necessary

-regularly reviews financial reports of current income and expenses


Becomes informed about the services offered by the library and promotes services in the community


Encourages strategic planning



Regularly evaluates the performance of the library director and fiscal officer, taking action as appropriate

Adheres to the Ohio Public Meetings Laws and any other responsibilities pursuant to Ohio Revised Code Supports basic library tenets such as: Intellectual Freedom, Freedom to Read, Confidentiality of Patron Records, Library Bill of Rights, and the Public's Right to Information


Becomes aware of local, state and federal library laws and issues, taking action when appropriate such as contacting local and state elected officials as needed

Abides by majority decisions reached by the Board and publicly supports these decisions

Follows the established chain of command for effecting change, working through the library director

Keeps up with current library trends and practices through:


-reading literature

-attending professional meetings

-visiting other libraries

-talking to trustees from other libraries Regularly evaluates the board's actions as appropriate.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Commitment to provide the best possible library service for the community

An abiding interest in the library and the community

Knowledge of the political climate of the community

Support for local, state, and national library organizations, joining those deemed most appropriate Readiness to devote time and effort to the duties of trusteeship (The term of the library trustee is 7 years)

Ability to work with people, lead meetings, and communicate effectively

October Family Night - Learn Magic

October 11

6:30 - 7:30 p.m.


Tuesday, October 11 from 6:30-7:30 PM is our next Family Night. Come spend an evening with Happy the Ranger and explore the magical world of laughter. See magic tricks and learn how to do magic from Happy!   No registration is required, however, children should be accompanied by an adult.  This program is appropriate for children 5 years and up.

Annual Family Halloween Party

October 25

6:30-8:00 p.m. 


On Tuesday, October 25 from 6:30-8:00 PM bring the family to our GROSS OUT NIGHT! Wear a costume and play our squishy, mushy, yucky, smelly games. There’ll be a few tricks and lots of treats! Come to the basement anytime between 6:30-8:00 p.m. with a parent to enjoy the fun! Thank you to Regal Rexnord of Tipp City for sponsoring this event!

October Art Spark

October 13

4:00 - 5:00 p.m.


Join Miss Julie in the Meeting Room on Thursday, October 13 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. to explore different styles of art and different artists using a variety of art materials. For 3rd-8th graders.  

This month we'll be making "Scream" paintings based on the book "Monster Mama" by Liz Rosenberg. Using crayons, liquid watercolors, and straws we'll create truly HAIR-RAISING pictures.  

Registration is required by Wednesday, Oct. 12, and can be done by calling the Main Desk at 937-667-3826 or going to the Children’s Program tab on our website. Registration begins October 3. 


Upcoming Programs for 6th-12th Grade Youth

Teen Tinker Lab Crafting 


Stop by the Teen Den between Oct. 3- Oct. 22 to paint and decorate a wooden pumpkin.  Your creation will be entered in the Pumpkin Decorating Contest that will be voted on by the families that come to our Halloween Gross Out Party on Oct. 27.


Will your pumpkin be the most creative, the best use of color, the scariest?  There will be lots of awards handed out and some fun prizes like gift cards, Halloween Treats, and more to be awarded on October 31.  Thanks to Regal Rexnord for sponsoring this project for our teens!

October Teen Contest

Guess how many pumpkin seeds you think are in the display pumpkin on the teen desk between Oct. 1-27. On October 27 we’ll cut it open and see who had the closest guess, without going over. There’s a Nightmare Before Christmas Clue Game for the winner!

YASLA Teen Top Ten Voting - Choose Your Favorite Book

The Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Associations (YALSA).  Then teens across the country vote can on their favorite titles each year from the nomination list. 

 

Readers ages twelve to eighteen vote online between August 15 - October 15 to narrow down the list of 25 nominees to this year’s Teens' Top Ten. The Tipp City Library provides a link on our Teen Programs webpage for you to vote for your favorites.  There is also a book display in the Teen Den highlighting some of these books so you can find your next great read!  MAKE YOUR CHOICE KNOW-VOTE!  YALSA will announce the voting results later in October and we’ll post those results.

Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia

Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease gives you a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future. This interactive workshop features video clips of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Dayton Literary Peace Prize Author Visit with Andrew Krivak and Ben Fountain

Join us in the Tippecanoe High School’s Center for Performing Arts for a presentation by award winning authors Andrew Krivak and Ben Fountain. The authors will discuss their books The Sojourn and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.  


The Sojourn was selected as the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Fiction Winner in 2012, National Book Award Finalist, The Chautauqua Prize, and other awards. 


Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk was selected as the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Runner Up for Fiction in 2013, National Book Award finalist, National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, and the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize. A film adaptation of the novel was released in 2016.


Members of the community and guests are invited to submit questions for the author as part of our program.
