Trustee Position Open

JOB TITLE: Library Trustee

ACCOUNTABLE TO: The taxpayers and the people served by the library


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Establishes policies and long-term goals for the library; oversees the general operation of the library; initiates and oversees the budget process; promotes and advocates for the library in the community; and, if applicable, hires the library director and fiscal officer


Attends all board meetings and participates appropriately:

-prepares for board meetings by reading board minutes and other materials sent out before the board meeting

-serves on committees as required

-lends expertise and leadership to the board for the good of the library


Establishes and abides by clear by-laws which outline operating procedures

Establishes library policies and reviews them on a regular basis, updating as needed

Strives for adequate funding levels for library operations and maintains a clear picture of the library's financial situation


-assists in budget preparation

-represents the library at local budget hearings

-requests funding from outside sources when necessary

-regularly reviews financial reports of current income and expenses


Becomes informed about the services offered by the library and promotes services in the community


Encourages strategic planning



Regularly evaluates the performance of the library director and fiscal officer, taking action as appropriate

Adheres to the Ohio Public Meetings Laws and any other responsibilities pursuant to Ohio Revised Code Supports basic library tenets such as: Intellectual Freedom, Freedom to Read, Confidentiality of Patron Records, Library Bill of Rights, and the Public's Right to Information


Becomes aware of local, state and federal library laws and issues, taking action when appropriate such as contacting local and state elected officials as needed

Abides by majority decisions reached by the Board and publicly supports these decisions

Follows the established chain of command for effecting change, working through the library director

Keeps up with current library trends and practices through:


-reading literature

-attending professional meetings

-visiting other libraries

-talking to trustees from other libraries Regularly evaluates the board's actions as appropriate.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Commitment to provide the best possible library service for the community

An abiding interest in the library and the community

Knowledge of the political climate of the community

Support for local, state, and national library organizations, joining those deemed most appropriate Readiness to devote time and effort to the duties of trusteeship (The term of the library trustee is 7 years)

Ability to work with people, lead meetings, and communicate effectively

Events Planned for the Whole Family

September Family Night- Storybook Walk & Fall Fun

Tuesday, September 27 from 6:30-7:30 PM is our next Family Night. No registration is required, however children ages 2-11 years should be accompanied by an adult.



We’re celebrating the start of Fall with crafts and games in the Children’s area and the Miami County Park District will be here doing a Storybook Walk outside in front of the library.  Each child will earn a special rock for reading the story, then come inside to do our games and crafts.  Come anytime between 6:30-7:30 p.m. to participate.

Art Spark Returns September 22nd 

Join Miss Julie in the Meeting Room on Thursday, September 22 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. to explore different styles of art and different artists using a variety of art materials.  For 3rd-8th graders. 

 

This month’s project will focus on the art of Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese contemporary artist who is often called the “princess of polka dots.”


Registration is required and can be done by calling the Main Desk at 937-667-3826 or going to the Children’s Program tab on our website.  Registration begins Sept. 6.

YALSA Teen Top Ten Voting- Choose Your Favorite Books 

The Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Associations (YALSA). Then teens across the country vote on their favorite titles each year from the nomination list. 

 

Readers ages twelve to eighteen vote online between August 15 - October 15 to narrow down the list of 25 nominees to this year’s Teens' Top Ten. The Tipp City Library provides a link on our Teen Programs webpage for you to vote for your favorites. There is also a book display in the Teen Den highlighting some of these books so you can find your next great read!  MAKE YOUR CHOICE KNOWN-VOTE!  YALSA will announce the voting results later in October and we’ll post those results.

Teen Tinker Lab Crafting

We’re bringing out the Perler Beads so you can have some fun after school making earrings and keychains and backpack tags in the Teen Den from Sept. 12-30.  We’ll supply the materials, you supply the creativity.

Dayton Literary Peace Prize Community Conversation 

September 21

Join us as we compare and contrast Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain and The Sojourn by Andrew Krivak. Topics discussed during this program will be included in the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Student Author Series presentation on October 14, 2022. 

Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia

Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease gives you a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future. This interactive workshop features video clips of people with Alzheimer’s disease.
