Greetings, Community Partners –

I hope this newsletter find each of you enjoying the month of February.

For this month, we have several updates to share relating to internal and external events, new initiatives, and adjustments we are making to our offerings based upon student data and community feedback.

Black History Month Activities

Lone Star College-Houston North’s Student Life held a series of programming this month to celebrate Black History. The two culminating events were held through a partnership with the Dr. L.C. Carter Foundation. The first was a drive-in movie at LSC-Houston North Fallbrook featuring the movie Red Tails. The second was a panel discussion with African American aviators. At LSC-Houston North, we believe our diversity is our strength. Therefore, we appreciate partnerships that provide our students with connections to diverse professionals.

Lone Star College Redistricting Process

Every ten years, when the U.S. Census data is published, institutions are required to re-divide single member districts “if the census data indicates that the population of the most populous district exceeds the population of the least populous district by more than 10 percent.” While the Lone Star College service area has increased by over 467,000 people since 2010, the distribution of the population have not been the same for each of our nine districts. Therefore, the Lone Star College Board of Trustees are currently leading the system through a redistricting process. As part of this effort, there will be a series of public forums that will provide the community with an opportunity to give feedback. For those individuals living in District 3 (Acres Homes, Carverdale, Fairbanks), the forum will be held at our LSC-Houston North Victory location on February 23 at 6 p.m.

Lone Star College-Houston North Business and ESOL Programs

While next month’s newsletter will include a series of new enrollment initiatives for the fall 2022 semester, there are two efforts I want to highlight this month. First, based upon a review of our service area socioeconomic data and feedback from the community, we will expand our ESOL program to our Greenspoint location. This program has had strong enrollment at our Fairbanks site, and we believe we can replicate this success by expanding it to also be offered at Greenspoint.

We are also moving our Business programs to our LSC-Houston North Fallbrook program. This location has eSports, which is a concentration of Business, as well as our Logistics Management programs. After this move, individuals interested in being business owners, accountants, managers, or in the case of Esports, agents, will be able to get all of their education at this site.

Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL)

The Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL) is a membership community that offers free and low-cost classes, events and activities for adults age 50 and older. As part of the Be Well initiative, we are hosting our first ALL class this February at our Victory location covering the topic of nutrition. This class covers provides nutrition tips as well as lessons in creating healthy meals using modern appliances such as air fryers. Special thanks to M.D. Anderson, for through their partnership, this class is free to attendees from the Acres Homes community.

Second 8-week classes Begin March 23

One of the most successful initiatives at Lone Star College-Houston North is our 8 week classes. Students that have enrolled in all 8-week classes have continually achieved high completion rates. With that noted, our next 8-week term will begin on March 23. Please reach out to HN-Info@lonestar.edu or call 281-260-3500 if you are interested (or know someone interested) in attending classes this March.

On another note, I want to thank each of you that have promoted our college. This spring, we grew by just over 2.5%. While we would have liked a higher percentage of growth, your assistance helped us become one of the only institutions within the state that have experienced any growth. Even with COVID, LSC-Houston North has now had three consecutive long semesters:

  • Spring 2021 (+35.1%)
  • Fall 2021 (+13.7%)
  • Spring 2022 (+2.9%)

I want to end by once again expressing my appreciation for each of you. It is my belief that anything we accomplish is a direct result of the support provided by our service area communities.

Sincerely,

Quentin Wright, Ed.D.

President, Lone Star College-Houston North

Upcoming Campus and Community Events

We want to express our appreciation to everyone that has contributed financially to our college. Note that 100% of donations go directly to support students through emergency funds, food/technology assistance, or tuition/textbook support. Every contribution helps. See below to see examples of how certain donations amount are used.

  • A $50 donation allows us to have groceries delivered into the home of a student in need.
  • A $60 donation will pay for six months of Internet service for a student living in zip codes supported by the Comcast Internet Essentials program.
  • A $300 donation will cover the tuition for a student to attend on course at LSC.
  • A $1,200 donation will cover a 12-hour semester (four courses) for a student.
  • A $6,000 donation will cover the full tuition costs of a student to complete a 60-hour degree.
