Welcome to virtual worship for this, the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost

You can access the texts for Sunday by following this link:

This week, we delve into the apocryphal work, the Wisdom of Solomon - not in either the Jewish or Christian canon though it is found in the Septuagint, and, no time to explain, but thanks for asking - for our first reading since about now we could all use some wisdom. We continue reading from Paul's letter to the Thessalonians - which the preacher confesses will be little more than a footnote in the sermon - and finally, we land in Matthew's gospel and the familiar parable of the ten virgins, also known as the parable of the five foolish virgins, OR, the parable of the five selfish virgins who refused to share their oil... (Didn't see that coming, eh?)

As always, we will open the worship space at 9:45 AM to give everyone a chance to do a little greeting before the service begins at 10.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Advent 2020 “Saturday Night at the Movies”

Advent calls us to “trust in the slow work of God.” Its themes include anticipation, preparation, prayer, expectation & hope.

Join the Regional Deacon for 3 movie nights this Advent that touch on these themes. We’ll gather (virtually, of course) on 12/5, 12/12, 12/19 beginning at 7 PM to watch a movie & hang out afterwards to discuss. Details for participating will be announced closer to 12/5.

12/5 – “The Bishop’s Wife” (1947), starring Cary Grant, Loretta Young, David Niven – a sweet, humorous story about an Episcopal bishop’s prayer for help & God’s unexpected response.

We’re still looking at options for the 12/12 & 12/19 features. If you have a favorite film that touches on 1 or more of these themes, please let Lisa+ know (DeaconLisaSoMD@gmail.com). It doesn’t have to be strictly Christmas-themed, but should be 2 hours or less running time.

Peace,
Regional Lisa+
Photos are needed to finalize our new and improved website that is COMING SOON! The Connections Commission is looking for photos related to All Saints' Parish community and outreach activities (especially with Parish members included) as well as Parish events and worship at All Saints. We are looking for high resolution images, preferably at least 1500 pixels wide.

If you have images that we can use, please email them to allsaints1692connections@gmail.com by Nov. 15th. We appreciate any photo contributions that you can send our way. If you have any questions, please call Deb Shupe at 410-231-8150.

The last harvest of the Spudnik Garden for 2020 was on November 4. With that last 11 lbs 14-1/4 oz of produce, we donated a record 635 lbs 3-7/8 oz of fresh vegetables to local food pantries this year, despite all of the challenges. We also installed a shed and constructed a Children's Garden.

We started the year with a very good group of volunteers: 14 teens, 6 children and 10 adult volunteers. Their early work in February and March laid a good foundation for success. At the end of March, because of COVID restrictions, we were forced to greatly curtail volunteer involvement. I want to thank all the volunteers who helped us get the garden started this year. I want especially to give a great big "shout out" to the Dickson-Burke and McCauley families for their hard and indispensable work in keeping the garden going, resulting in our best harvest year in the 5 years of Spudnik. I particularly want to commend Paul Dickson; Mary Burke; their sons Ryan, our teen president; and Jack, who came back from college because of COVID and returned to Spudnik. Without their dedication, we could not have kept the garden going. I want to commend also John and Kristi McCauley and their son Alex and daughter Evie who worked with us in the garden and were a great help. The McCauleys are our neighbors and a Catholic family. Their involvement with Spudnik over the last two years illustrates the ecumenical and community nature of Project Spudnik.

A very important emphasis of Project Spudnik is educating children and youth on environmentally sound gardening practices using the medium of container gardening. Unfortunately, we were unable to follow through with the educational component because of COVID. We pray that this scourge will soon pass and we can fulfill the all the objectives of Project Spudnik once again.

Trivia Friday evening, November 6 at 7 PM is the time and date for our next Trivia showdown. This month's contest is entitled "What Just Happened...?" which may or may not delve into anything current and will certainly not offer any insights or answers to any lingering questions... but it will give license for us to try to find a friendly and challenging distraction from whatever just happened...

So, in the spirit of good health and safety and bipartisan trivial pursuits, we hope you will join us for our monthly quiz.

As always, the game room will open at 6:40 so you have time to register your team or individual 'trivia' name and do some last minute posturing and/or trash talking with your opponents.

Here is the link to our Quiz:

On your laptop, pc, or other smart device, click on this link:

If you are joining over the Zoom app, enter the meeting ID and password when prompted:
Meeting ID: 854 2143 1414
Password: 018091

Feel free to invite friends and family to play. Please have them contact us at allsaints1692@allsaints1692.org so we can identify them when they arrive for the quiz.
And, before the game, please check out the specials at the Scorpion in Owings - our partner in trivia for going on six years. Nothing like a friendly growler and some exotic food truck offering to get you ready to rumble. Through our monthly contests, we have raised thousands of dollars in support of youth leadership development in Calvert County, and also money to feed hungry families and individuals in our communities.
Skills Extravaganza

Join us for two special Skills Extravaganza presentations on holiday decorating.
For the first at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov 7, Patti At Lee will help enhance your Thanksgiving celebration with unique decorations.

She will show us how to create three different centerpieces:
  • a pumpkin design with flowers;
  • a pumpkin cut-out with flowers arranged inside; and
  • a cornucopia basket with squash, pumpkins, and other vegetables.

For those who wish to follow along and work under Patti's tutelage, here's what you need to have handy:
  • ornamental squash,
  • small pumpkins white and orange,
  • medium-size pumpkin (with lid cut off and seeds removed),
  • cornucopia basket,
  • whole medium pumpkin.
  • flowers: mums: various colors and kinds. Or two bundles of flowers from the store and some greenery.
  •
Patti's Dec 5 Christmas designs presentation will focus on your Christmas decorating. More information coming soon!

Brighten your holiday season with your own creations, thanks to Patti's guidance. We have so much to be thankful for, especially as God is bringing us through this pandemic and closer to each other.

I Am Thankful For....
We will celebrate Thanksgiving very soon. (Can it be that Thanksgiving is less than 2 months away?) Even though this year has been difficult for all of us, we have so much for which to be thankful. Giving thanks is a part of our daily lives, but it plays a major role in any Thanksgiving celebration. This year at All Saints', we would like you to share with all of the parishioners some things that you are thankful for. click https://conta.cc/3hKpaPe to find out about the parish-wide project that the Parish Family Life Commission has in store for us!
Thanksgiving Baskets

A time-honored All Saints tradition is to provide “Thanksgiving Baskets” to individuals and families who would not have a bountiful Thanksgiving meal. If you would like to join in this tradition, please send a check to our Treasurer at the church address, or make a donation via Easy Tithe at the Parish website. The amount for each basket is $50. Whether by check or online, please note that the contribution is for “Thanksgiving Baskets”.
PLEASE NOTE AND RESPECT
Parish buildings are not open now. Only individuals specifically authorized for an essential service may be in them (e.g., Heartfelt food packing). Those authorized individuals must wear masks, must practice social distancing and must sanitize touch areas as they enter and as they leave. This is not a matter of personal choice and applies to everyone including volunteers, business suppliers, and contract personnel. If you note a deviation, you may politely remind the individual. If you are not comfortable doing that or doing so doesn’t correct the problem, please contact a church officer. A sign in sheet Is at each entrance. Please fill it out with your name, date and time in/out of the parish hall. Thank you.
Reminder From the News Team. Info and flyers to be published in the December monthly newsletter needed to be received via email by Tuesday, November 24. Please send information to allsaints1692@allsaints1692.org AND allsaints1692connections @gmail.com. This allows time for editing and clarification when needed. Please submit your event in the form you wish it to appear and complete. Example: If it's a cooking show, please include the recipe with the copy.
