LORRAINE HANSBERRY & "RAISIN IN THE SUN"
GLIMMER IN NEW NUANCE WITH
"IN THE EVENING BY THE MOONLIGHT"
Culture and Arts Editor for the San Francisco BayView Newspaper speaks about the new work featured at the SFBATCO New Roots Theatre Festival.

Set in 1963 at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, In the Evening by the Moonlight imagines a magical moment in the life of award-winning playwright and activist Lorraine Hansberry. On this night, at her Waverly Place flat in New York, Lorraine shares a rowdy scotch filled evening debating, confronting fears, and celebrating the hope of revolution with her two close friends- the incomparable musician Nina Simone and the prolific writer James Baldwin. This original play by co-creators Margo Hall and Traci Tolmaire is an intimate portrait of Lorraine Hansberry. Despite her looming illness, she and Nina prepare for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) benefit concert at Carnegie Hall and welcome Jimmy home from Paris after the horrific assassination of Medgar Evers.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMA NORA

NORA HENDERSON OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA WOULD HAVE BEEN 123 YEARS OLD TODAY!
GRANDMOTHER OF MY FATHER, SP5 WYLEY WRIGHT JR., SHE TAUGHT "RIGHT IS RIGHT AND RIGHT DON'T WRONG NOBODY" AND ALWAYS GAVE UNQUESTIONABLE EXAMPLES.

CALLED MS. NORA OR MOMA NORA BY EVEN NON-FAMILY MEMBERS, SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF THE FLORAD NEIGHBORHOOD BABYSITTING FOR YOUNG MOTHERS AND THE RED CROSS, COLLECTING USED CLOTHES, WASHING AND IRONING THEM TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO PEOPLE BURNED OUT OF THEIR HOMES.

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICE STARTED AT HOME. THIS QUOTE BY A FRIEND THIS MORNING MADE ME THINK OF HER.. AS SHE REINFORCED BY MOTHER, OUIDA FAY WRIGHT’S CONSTANT DECLARATION, “CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME AND SPREADS ABROAD.”

...Thoughts flowing from long time friend and fellow thespian, an understudy in Othello, who kindly, introduced me to Paul Winfield, who was playing the title role at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre while I was a University of Georgia Drama student. Mr. Winfield kindly allowed me an interview for my journalism class. Thanks Malik Purley.
