Banned Books Week
Banned Books Week is September 27th through October 3rd! This annual campaign, promoted by the American Library Association (ALA) and Amnesty International, celebrates the freedom to read and draws attention to banned and challenged books, and highlights persecuted individuals. According to the ALA, Banned Books Week is held each year "to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society." To celebrate, stop into our library and checkout a banned book, or visit one of our free online streaming services like Hoopla or Libby and download one today!
Large Art Installation Has Begun!
Muralist, Atalie Gagnet, has started the painting process this week for the large art installation on the library's exterior wall facing the alley that is shared with Coldwater Café. Stop by and watch the magic happen! Turn the Page Dayton Literary Peace Prize Event
On October 1, from 7-8:30 p.m., join us on Zoom for the first segment of Turn the Page brought to you by the Dayton Literary Peace Prize (DLPP). Each segment will bring two DLPP winning authors together to discuss a subject their works have in common. Gilbert King, a DLPP Honorary Advisory Board member, the 2013 DLPP Runner-up for The Devil in the Grove and the Pulitzer Prize winner for the same title, will moderate the segments. This first Turn the Page event, "The American Dream: Whose Myth? Whose Reality?," will feature a conversation between Min Jin Lee and Viet Thanh Nguyen. Inhabit Yoga Virtual Program
Molly from Inhabit Yoga introduces fundamental yoga breathing, postures, alignment and core muscle engagement to support your lifelong yoga practice. Whether you are brand new to yoga or a seasoned veteran, you will benefit from getting back to the basics! Join us on Facebook Live on our Facebook page for this live program. You do not have to have a Facebook account to view any of our library's virtual programs. The next virtual yoga session is scheduled for this Friday, October 2 at 11 a.m.

Virtual Book Club
Catch up with our library's Virtual Book Club this week on our library's Facebook page. This week, we focus on the novel A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle.

A Wrinkle in Time follows two children who, upon finding out that their father has been captured, set out to rescue him. In a race against time, the children must travel to another planet to save him in the ultimate battle of good vs. evil.

Events Planned for the Whole Family
New Preschool Storytime Dates Added
By popular demand, the Children’s Department at our library has announced two more dates recently added in October for the successful Storytime in the Park series for preschoolers that started in September. Miss Heidi and Miss Julie will be at Tipp City Park for a dance party on Tuesday, October 6 at 10:30 a.m. near the tennis courts. On Tuesday, October 13 at 10:30 a.m., join Miss Heidi and Miss Julie at Kyle Park near the Shelter House by the soccer fields for stories, songs, and a take-home craft. In case of inclement weather, the program will move to the Thursday of the same week at 10:30 a.m. No pre-registration is required, but you will be asked to sign-in when you arrive at the park. Adults are asked to wear masks and bring along lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on.

Come and see Miss Heidi and Miss Julie at Kyle Park next to the Shelter House located by the soccer fields. During these storytime sessions, enjoy audience participation stories, songs and demonstration of a craft that children can take to do at home.

Free Children's eBooks to Help Explain Coronavirus
Parents and teachers looking for resources to share with children that explain the Coronavirus will find the list of FREE eBooks created by the New York City School Library System very useful. This list of eBooks from around the world is in multiple languages and contains hundreds of eBooks geared towards young children. The list includes books about germs, washing hands, front-line workers and why it’s important to social distance. These free downloadable books are also a great way to open up discussions with children about their potential fears developing in our everchanging world. If you are running out of creative things to do, here is a fun project to try on your phone or device and share with your friends! JigsawExplorer.com is a website created with the intent on providing jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts with a great selection of high quality, family-friendly online jigsaw puzzles. There are thousands of puzzles available to build on-line and new puzzles being added every day.

The fun really begins when you send them your own photo to create a custom jigsaw puzzle that can be easily shared with family and friends via email and social media. Just enter the web address of your image file, click the Create button and your puzzle is ready! You do not need to worry about uploading your photo to their website because they do not store or copy your photos, nor do they use, publish or distribute the image link or resulting puzzle. It is your jigsaw puzzle and only you will decide who it will be shared with.
