International Pronouns Day - October 20

From the UCSF Office of Diversity & Outreach, LGBTQ Resource Center

International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and education about pronouns commonplace.

Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people. Together, we can transform society to celebrate people's multiple intersecting identities. Click here to learn more.

Visit the LGBT Resource Center website to view educational videos on pronouns and for additional resources.

Our Division has ordered a batch of pronoun stickers from Parnassus that will be available in the upcoming weeks. More details to come.

2021 DPH Annual Compliance Training

100% completion of the 2021 ZSFG eLearning is the goal by November 1, 2021.

The Division is currently at 27% completion.

Access the SF Learning platform through the UCSF Dean’s Office at ZSFG website and click on the "SF Learning Login" button or log in to the DPH Staff Learning Portal to get started. You will need your POI number which you received via email. If you are a new employee, you should have received this information via e-mail from the DPH directly.

Cleaning the Refrigerators in Kitchen and Oval Office

Next Thursday, October 28, at 2 PM the kitchen and Oval Office refrigerators will be cleaned out.

Please look and make sure you have labeled all of your containers. Anything unlabeled or spoiled will be disposed of.

DEM Pumpkin Carving Event

RSVP to Attend Seminar Series, In-Person

The weekly seminar series will be hybrid for the foreseeable future. Please RSVP here if you would like to attend next week's seminar, in-person.

The current capacity is 22 people, but that is subject to change as new policies are announced. RSVP's will be cut off on the Monday of the seminar at 10 AM.

This form will be sent out weekly to allow everyone a chance to attend in-person.

Great California ShakeOut

On Thursday, October 21, UCSF is participating in the Great ShakeOut, a national earthquake emergency preparedness drill that involves millions of households, businesses, schools, and public agencies. As part of the official great ShakeOut event, which is scheduled to occur at 10:21 AM. UCSF Police Department will issue an alert using WarnMe across the campus and health system environments.

The ZSFG Nova12 Breast Cancer Disparities Walk

A message from ZSFG DOM Division of Hematology-Oncology

The Nova12SF walk was born to benefit the Breast Care Programs at ZSFG after the Avon39 walks ended abruptly in 2017. Since 2002, the breast programs have received over $14 million from the two-day Avon walks. Nova is Avon spelled backwards and the 12-mile walk represents the 12% of women that develop breast cancer annually.

The Fourth Annual NOVA 12 SF Walk will take place on Saturday, October 23, 2021. Please consider joining as a walker or volunteer or donate. Visit www.nova12sf.com.

UCSF Climate Survey

One of the goals at UCSF is to ensure that people in our university community feel empowered and valued in an environment that fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Chancellor’s leadership team continues to work on multiple fronts to create a culture in which faculty, staff, and learners from all backgrounds feel welcomed, supported, and respected.

To better understand how we are doing in this regard, the Chancellor's office invites you to share your perspectives and experiences about the environment in which you work and learn through the UCSF Climate Survey. On October 11, you received an email with a unique link to the confidential survey, which closes November 30.

Please complete this survey to help us build upon and enrich our diverse culture. Your feedback will help develop action plans to strengthen our community.

ZSFG Flu Clinic

This year, with COVID still circulating broadly in the community, it is more important than ever to ensure that everyone who can get a vaccine gets one as early as possible. Like last year, there is a SF Health Order mandating that all healthcare workers be vaccinated against the flu by October 31, 2021

Head down to the Cafeteria (Bldg. 5, 2D31, near Café 3) to get your flu vaccine, starting 9/27/2021! Flu shots will be available at the Cafeteria Monday through Saturday, 7:30am-4:00pm. Please bring your ZSFG badge when you come to the flu clinic.

This year, our goal is audacious: starting this week, vaccinate 90% of staff by October 31, 2021!

Additionally, UCSF also accepts outside flu shot records. If you receive your vaccination from your own provider, you can submit your record of vaccination to flu@ucsf.edu. Include your UCSF Employee ID number in the email when submitting.

UCSF COVID-19 Policy

UCSF Recovery Operations Center has updated it's guidelines. Though our events at ZSFG follow more restrictive guidelines, in DEM, we are preparing for the return of in-person meetings through the following:

To maintain the required 50% capacity and/or 6’ of separation, please sit 1 person per table and/or space your chairs out in the room.
Email ExperimentalMedicine@ucsf.edu with names of people who attend your meetings in-person in case contract tracing is required.
We will return to posting the weekly meeting calendar outside the conference rooms so you can see when the room is unavailable.

To reiterate, the ROC has stressed that Business & Morale meetings should, to every extent possible, be conducted virtually.

It has been a while since we have had conference room reservations and a booking process. Please take a moment to review the DEM Conference Room booking information so that we are all following the same process.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Resource

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion: New Criticisms and Challenges

"No area of higher education has changed more fundamentally in my lifetime of teaching than what once was called affirmative action and now is called diversity, equity, and inclusion. Starting from virtually nothing in the early 1960s, colleges have formed massive and typically powerful bureaucracies to assure that schools have learning and discovery communities are “diverse.” It is the academic obsession du jour.

In the course of a week of traveling last week to academic events in three states (Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Texas) I became more conversant with two dissenting voices on current policy initiatives in this area. In North Carolina, I encountered John Chisholm, Silicon Valley entrepreneur with close ties to his alma mater M.I.T. I also started reading A Dubious Expediency, a new highly critical assessment of racial preferences co-edited by a friend of mine, Gail Heriot, law professor at the University of San Diego and also a longtime member of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. Gail and I serve together on the board of the National Association of Scholars."

Aria Cell Sorter is Down

There is a service contract in place and CIL will be looking into repairs.

Aria Cell Sorter Replacement

Considering options for replacement, including a Fisher “Bigfoot” and Cytek “Aurora Sorter.” Will be requesting demonstrations and information for both. We are looking to align with Parnassus Flow Core and Gladstone sorters.

Call for Service and Error

Make sure your lab members call PFCC core AND email flowassist@ucsf.edu if any problems while running flow. A part-time flow core representative is on campus for maintenance and cleaning.

Adding People to “DEM Flow User List”

Email Justin and DEM General with the names of people to add to the list. The distribution list email is: ZSFGDEMFlowUsers@ucsf.edu. Tash will add non-DEM users and send Justin new names as they get trained.
