2021 DPH Annual Compliance Training

100% completion of the 2021 ZSFG eLearning is the goal by November 1, 2021.

Access the SF Learning platform through the UCSF Dean’s Office at ZSFG website and click on the "SF Learning Login" button or log in to the DPH Staff Learning Portal to get started. You will need your POI number which you received via email. If you are a new employee, you should have received this information via e-mail from the DPH directly.

Return of In-Person Seminar Series

Next week we will be testing out an in-person seminar series with Joel and Justin's presentation of the State of the DEM.

The conference room has been configured to maintain 6 feet of distance between each chair. We can fit 9 around the table and an additional 10 around the room. With a speaker, the capacity is 20 people. The room's capacity is subject to the guidelines provided by UCSF and the DPH which will change as policy and future updates are provided.

Since space is limited and interest in returning to an in-person seminar series is high, we will a have to set up reservations to limit capacity. We will be sending out an RSVP via a separate email.

UCSF Climate Survey

One of the goals at UCSF is to ensure that people in our university community feel empowered and valued in an environment that fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Chancellor’s leadership team continues to work on multiple fronts to create a culture in which faculty, staff, and learners from all backgrounds feel welcomed, supported, and respected.

To better understand how we are doing in this regard, the Chancellor's office invites you to share your perspectives and experiences about the environment in which you work and learn through the UCSF Climate Survey. On October 11, you received an email with a unique link to the confidential survey, which closes November 30.

Please complete this survey to help us build upon and enrich our diverse culture. Your feedback will help develop action plans to strengthen our community.

For Mac Users: Installing DPH Certificate for Wireless Network Access

The DPH Network Operations team has upgraded the connection security certificate on their Identity Service Engine (ISE) server to cut over to the newly-issued Entrust certificate.

Any Mac devices previously connecting to the DPHuser Full Access wireless network at the ZSFG campus will need to install the new security certificate in order to connect to the network.

Please follow the instructions here to install the updated Mac network certificate profiles.

ZSFG Flu Clinic

This year, with COVID still circulating broadly in the community, it is more important than ever to ensure that everyone who can get a vaccine gets one as early as possible. Like last year, there is a SF Health Order mandating that all healthcare workers be vaccinated against the flu by October 31, 2021

Head down to the Cafeteria (Bldg. 5, 2D31, near Café 3) to get your flu vaccine, starting 9/27/2021! Flu shots will be available at the Cafeteria Monday through Saturday, 7:30am-4:00pm. Please bring your ZSFG badge when you come to the flu clinic.

This year, our goal is audacious: starting this week, vaccinate 90% of staff by October 31, 2021!

Additionally, UCSF also accepts outside flu shot records. If you receive your vaccination from your own provider, you can submit your record of vaccination to flu@ucsf.edu. Include your UCSF Employee ID number in the email when submitting.

UCSF COVID-19 Policy

UCSF Recovery Operations Center has updated it's guidelines. Though our events at ZSFG follow more restrictive guidelines, in DEM, we are preparing for the return of in-person meetings through the following:

To maintain the required 50% capacity and/or 6’ of separation, please sit 1 person per table and/or space your chairs out in the room.
Email ExperimentalMedicine@ucsf.edu with names of people who attend your meetings in-person in case contract tracing is required.
We will return to posting the weekly meeting calendar outside the conference rooms so you can see when the room is unavailable.

To reiterate, the ROC has stressed that Business & Morale meetings should, to every extent possible, be conducted virtually.

It has been a while since we have had conference room reservations and a booking process. Please take a moment to review the DEM Conference Room booking information so that we are all following the same process.

Committee Updates

In order to capture the highlights of our various committees, we will be providing a summary and link to the minutes in the section below.

DEM Steering Committee (DEMSC)

RAB: A timeline was discussed. Please review the RAB website for additional information. To follow-up, the labs were asked to identify a champion for their lab to help with coordination. Additional details TBA.

Conference Room: It was brought to the committee's attention that the 505 Conference Room should be kept open during lunch hours to allow people another space to eat. The committee came to the conclusion that the 505 Conference Room would be blocked off for reservations from 12PM -1PM to allow people to eat lunch. The Collaboration Room 501, Oval Office 601, and Lactation Room 627 will be blocked off for lunch from 11:30AM - 1:30PM. If you would like to make a reservation in 501, 601, or 627, please refer to this link.

ModuleBio: ModuleBio is the UCSF Office of Sponsored Research approved sample inventory tracking system. It is currently the leading contender for DEM. We are scheduling a second demo. If you are interested, please complete the Doodle Poll.

Lab Managers Meeting

Monnit sensor order-each lab is to provide Isaac Thomas with the number of Monnit sensors needed and for which piece of equipment
Cleaning timeline for the new research and academic building (RAB)- each lab is to get back to Vanessa with any help needed for cleaning out documents (including shredding and scanning), specimen organization, chemical organization, and surplus of equipment and supplies no longer needed
Common equipment trainers-the list of trainers is posted on the DEM intranet.
ModuleBio-Labs are encouraged to attend the ModuleBio demo as this is the system DEM is considering for specimen tracking.
DEM intranet-Justin and Vanessa walked through the intranet with those present.
Navigating lab management responsibilities-Vanessa asked for any lab manager to reach out for help and support with any lab management responsibilities.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Resource

Addressing Structural Racism in the Health Workforce

One of the greatest challenges facing the United States are health inequities among racial/ethnic and other marginalized populations. The deep-rooted structural racism embedded in our social systems, including our health care system and health workforce, is a core cause of racial health inequities. Among many definitions of institutionalized or structural racism, Dr Jones best defines it as: “Differential access to goods, services and opportunities of society by race … It is structural, having been codified in our institutions of custom, practice, and law, so there need not be an identifiable perpetrator.” Dr Jones further explains that to set things right in our country, we have to address this type of racism that is embedded in all of our systems. Historical and existing structural obstacles have significantly reduced access to health professions education among marginalized populations in the United States.
