It's Tofurky Trot Time Again!

Raising money for local animal sanctuaries

by Gail Sears

Thanksgiving morning at 9:00 AM, hundreds of kids, dogs, and grown-ups of all skill levels will converge on Oaks Park to run or walk the Tofurky 5K course. This is Northwest VEG's biggest fundraiser of the year and profits are shared with numerous local farm sanctuaries.

Need more reasons to come out and enjoy this spectacular event? How about hot drinks, vegan treats, and a costume contest with prizes to be awarded by Seth Tibbott, Tofurky's founder. You can register by clicking below. While the race participants have a lot of fun, so do the many volunteers who come out to support them. We still have a number of openings for course monitors, who cheer the walkers and runners on and make sure everyone stays safe. If you can help with this very important job, please sign up here.

See you on Thanksgiving!

The Traveling Vegan

Eating Around the World

By Louise Harmon

We recently enjoyed a wonderful 23-day vacation visiting Norway, Scotland, Ireland, England and Iceland. Our travel group included my husband (an omnivore), my son and his partner, Beth (both vegetarians), and me, a vegan. My son and I are also gluten-intolerant. We traveled by plane, cruise ship, car and foot. During the 11 days we were aboard our cruise ship, breakfasts and dinners aligning with our dietary needs were provided for us. However, when we were in port and needed something to eat, or traveling through countries on our own, how did we manage to find food that worked with all our specific dietary needs?

Turkeys Are Friends, Not Food

Photos and text by Beth Lily Redwood

“May we create compassionate Thanksgiving rituals that reflect the fact that neither our values nor an animal have to be sacrificed in order to celebrate this holiday.” –Colleen Patrick-Goudreau

We are a nation of so-called “animal lovers” and yet at Thanksgiving we contribute to the horrific suffering and mass slaughter of 46 million innocent, young turkeys. Each individual was someone who wanted nothing more than to live in peace, safety, and maybe to share a sweet hug with a human friend.

It doesn’t have to be this way. With countless ways to give thanks for the blessings in our lives without depriving someone else of theirs, we can choose a plant-based holiday roast, veganize traditional recipes, join with friends and family at compassionate Thanksgiving gatherings—like Northwest VEG’s potluck on November 24. We can also support a farm animal sanctuary where rescued turkeys live happily with kindness and respect, and they show us the many reasons why turkeys are our friends, not food.

Plant-Based Recipe of the Month

Vegan Shepherd's Pie

By Linda Tyler, the Gracious Vegan

Plant-based shepherd’s pie makes a great Thanksgiving main dish. Packed with lentils, mushrooms, aromatics, and a flavorful blend of herbs, this recipe tastes great and delivers the goods when it comes to nutrition. High in protein and fiber, lentils serve as a perfect stand-in for meat, while a creamy layer of mashed potatoes adds that familiar, cozy texture we all love in a shepherd’s pie.

Chances are good that omnivores will love this pie, so grab your helping first!
