In January, we reviewed our inaugural in-person Leadership Skills Retreat on November 17, 2023, with about 60 midcareer faculty attending. Our speakers were Mary Shapiro on “Understanding and Optimizing Your Leadership Style,” Melissa Brodrick and Lisa Neale on “Conversations that take Courage,” and Sareh Parangi on “Skills for Successful Leaders.”
In February, we focused on the OSFA Faculty Transition Series, introducing the first four scheduled monthly sessions: “Successful Transition to Retirement While Balancing Continued Engagement at MGH”; "Crafting Your Next Chapter- Reframe, Revitalize, and Reinvent”; “Health of Your Wealth: Retiring against a backdrop of change”; and “Retirement Nuts and Bolts."
In March, we publicized our second in-person Leadership Skills Retreat. Topics did not overlap but complemented those from the November session. Speakers included Josh Goldstein on “Shift from Mentoring to Sponsorship”; Andy Nierenberg on “How to Give a Talk”; Normella Walker (who replaced Anna Brown) on “Building Diversity and Avoiding Unconscious Bias”; and Sabrina Paganoni on “Building and Managing Teams.”
In April, we summarized the March Faculty Transition Series session with Nora Yousif and reminded faculty of the upcoming session on the Nuts-and-Bolts of Retirement.
In May, we introduced our initiative to offer ongoing connection to MGH faculty moving to part-time work or retirement: voluntary participation in projects related to clinical care, research, or mentoring. Faculty can access a signup link to indicate interest in being contacted about any relevant opportunities.
In June, we announced a fifth component to the OSFA Faculty Transition Series, “The Nuts and Bolts of ‘Partial’ Retirement.” This panel was offered to faculty stepping back from full-time research or clinical careers but not ready to fully retire.
We hope that everyone is staying cool during this hot spell and that everyone is taking some well-earned time off.
