Brilliant. Famous. Wealthy. Yet Apparently Ignorant...
re the #1 Driver of Climate Change
Bill Gates and other climate change "experts"
SOS #194 -- J. Morris Hicks -- (1-24-23)
This subject is frustratingly complex while refreshingly simple at the same time. My goal in this SOS Memo, as always, is to tell an important story that any high school senior could easily understand.

The frustration surrounding this topic is driven by all of the confusion that exists about the role of animal agriculture in climate change and many other environmental disasters such as ocean dead zones, species extinction, melting glaciers and the disappearance of ice in the Arctic Ocean.
I am doing my best to bring clarity to this most confusing topic in as few words as possible. That said, there are more words in this SOS Memo than most Earthlings "have time" to read.

Read it in two or three sittings if necessary.
But please read it. And share it.

As you may have noticed, I have decided to focus primarily -- almost exclusively in fact -- on the leading driver of climate change and what we must do about that leading driver, if we're to have a snowball's chance in hell of avoiding extinction.

Please understand that I am not using the word "ignorant" in the title as an insult. I am just suggesting that some of the world's most famous climate "experts" appear to be in the dark when it comes to understanding the leading driver of climate change.

  • Webster's definition of ignorant: lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject

I have used the slide below for the past few months as I try desperately to understand how and why these seven well-known and widely respected men remain conspicuously silent regarding the leading driver of climate change -- the driver that does more damage than all other drivers combined.
Of course, a huge part of the problem is the fact that the Food & Agricultural arm of the United Nations (the UNFAO) has never fully acknowledged the enormity of the role that animal agriculture plays in climate change. In fact, it's as if they have been trying to hide that important fact.

For your convenience, I have provided a timeline of the primary research on the leading drivers of climate change. I've also included a few easier-to-digest videos -- a list that includes a short one of my own the #3 position below.

This list has appeared in the Appendix of my SOS Memos for over a year. It begins with the first UN report on this topic that was published in 2006 -- concluding that animal agriculture was responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions.

The next paper was published by two World Bank researchers in 2009 -- concluding that the UN's number was woefully low and that the correct number was "at least" 51%.
Chronological timeline of climate change research
  1. 2006 UNFAO report, Livestock's Long Shadow concluded that18% of climate change is attributed to animal agriculture (far more than the world's entire transportation sector. After pressure from the massive animal agriculture industry, they even lowered their estimates to 14.5% a few years later.
  2. 2009 World Bank Group researchers (Goodland and Anhang) concluded that at least 51% of climate change is being driven by animal agriculture -- almost four times more powerful than the numbers being reported in the 2006 UNFAO report.
  3. 2012. What is the right food for humans to be eating? For our own health and for the health of the planet. Five-minute video with J. Morris Hicks
  4. 2019 Dr. Sailesh Rao peer-reviewed paper. This former member of Al Gore's environmental team concluded that 87% of climate change is driven by animal agriculture. His paper was recently featured in Forbes.
  5. 2021. A 19-minute video session with the producers of the new documentary, Eating Our Way to Extinction.
  6. 2021.The Animal/Climate Controversy? Dr. Gerard Bisshop, Director of World Preservation Foundation sorts out the various studies regarding the huge role that animal agriculture plays in climate change (9 minute video).
  7. 2021. This six minute video features Dr. Sailesh Rao, speaking candidly with Klaus Mitchell about the sad truths and commercial interests behind the leading driver of climate change. It will make you want to scream.
  8. 2022. Published in PLOS Climate (2-1-22) a paper by Michael Eisen and Patrick Brown, "Rapid global phaseout of animal agriculture has the potential to stabilize Gh Gas levels for 30 years and offset 68 percent of CO2 emissions this century." This image is on the cover of the paper.
Here's one highly relevant sentence from the
Abstract of the Eisen & Brown 2022 paper above:

  • "Here we quantify the full climate opportunity cost of current global livestock production, by modeling the combined, long-term effects of emission reductions and biomass recovery that would be unlocked by a phaseout of animal agriculture."
Item #9 in the Climate Timeline
In August of 2022, Dr. Sailesh Rao told Rip Esselstyn in this one-hour video why he resigned from Al Gore's climate team in 2012.

My own title for this very informative video is this key question:

Although I was already familiar with this sad story, it was disturbing to hear it being told aloud by my friend and colleague, Sailesh. He resigned because the former vice president lacked the courage to admit to the world that animal agriculture is, by far, the leading driver of climate change. It was in 2012 and it still is in 2023.

Why would Mr. Gore not tell the world the complete truth about such a crucial topic? My guess is that he knew that such a stance would be so unpopular that it would cost him his lofty position as perhaps "the world's leading environmentalist" -- a reputation that he earned with his blockbuster film in 2006, An Inconvenient Truth

If my guess is true, I consider his silence to be one of the most deplorable cases of inaction in the history of humanity -- the fact that he is not loudly broadcasting to the world the complete truth about our best possible chance to slow, stop or even reverse runaway climate change.
What if Gore had come clean in 2012?
The other six men pictured above -- might now be telling the world the complete truth about climate change.
If Gore had come clean in 2012, even the UN & the IPCC might be telling a much more accurate story today.

What about the UN? Aren't they supposed to be the world's truth tellers on crucial matters like this? A little background: The United Nations was formed in 1945, the year of my birth. Their stated mission:

  • The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization whose stated purposes are to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations.

Throughout the first 68 years of my life, I greatly admired the United Nations and have always been grateful that there was such a fine, global institution looking after common interests of all eight billion human residents of this wonderful planet.
But my opinion changed sharply in 2013 when I first heard about Goodland & Anhang's World Bank climate research paper that was published in 2009.

Sadly, just as I was getting to know Robert Goodland via email in early 2013 -- and understanding the enormity of his findings, he passed away following a hiking accident in the Himalayas. From his obituary in The Guardian on February 4, 2014:

  • "In 1978, Robert started working as the first full-time ecologist at the World Bank in Washington. Over the next 23 years, in various senior positions, he developed environmental and social policies and procedures, and, more importantly, persuaded the bank to implement them. They gained recognition and were adopted by several other development agencies."

After attending Goodland's memorial service in February of 2014, I realized that there were some improprieties occurring in the "Food & Agricultural Organization" of one of the world's most respected institutions: the United Nations.

While in Washington, I met Jeff Anhang, Goodland's co-author of their 2009 landmark research paper. Since then, Jeff and I have communicated often. Here is an image of their paper that was first published in worldwatch.org in 2009.
Back to the question at the beginning of this section: Should the world believe the UNFAO's numbers when it comes to the primary drivers of climate change?

The short answer is no. That's because I have reason to believe that we have a situation somewhat like the "fox guarding the henhouse" that I will explain below. But first, check out the 2019 paper by Dr. Sailesh Rao.
Exactly ten years after the Goodland & Anhang paper in 2009, Dr. Rao published a new, peer-reviewed position paper in the Journal of Ecological Society, pictured above: Animal Agriculture Is the Leading Cause of Climate Change.

Dr. Rao concluded that animal agriculture was responsible for 87% of climate change -- even more than the "at least 51%" that had been reported by Goodland & Anhang in in 2009.
Watch Dr. Rao talk about his 2019 paper in this powerful six-minute video with Klaus Mitchell in 2021.

A personal factoid. I may quite possibly be the only person on the planet who knows both Jeff Anhang and Sailesh Rao personally, and I greatly respect the work of these two esteemed colleagues.

To me, Rao's 2019 paper further validates the findings of the 2009 paper by Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang. The primary reason behind the difference between 51% and 87% is the manner in which Rao treated the massive deforestation that has taken place since 1800 -- to support animal agriculture.
Primarily due to deforestation driven by animal agriculture, in the past 10,000 years, we have lost roughly half of the six trillion trees that nature had in place before the arrival of Homo sapiens.

This clever 15-minute video tells a story in a way people of all ages can understand -- about what happened to all of those trees -- the loss of which has contributed mightily to the rapid heating of the planet.

To help clear up the confusion, I recommend this 2021 video entitled The Animal/Climate Controversy. In just 9 minutes, Dr. Gerard Bisshop (Director of World Preservation Foundation) clarifies the info in a way that most can understand easily.

Here's the way I see it...
Whether it's 51% or 87%,
Animal Agriculture is, by far, the leading driver of climate change -- larger than
ALL other drivers combined!
And the really good news is that animal agriculture is the ONLY primary driver of climate change that it would be possible to completely eliminate in less than one decade.

Possible, but not very likely. Why so?

The entire developed world has been in love with eating meat, dairy, eggs and fish for a long time. Plus, millions more people in the developing world are trying to eat those kinds of animal-based foods just as soon as they can.

Also, as alluded to earlier, we have a lot of "foxes guarding the henhouse" -- consisting of a partnership among the many entities whose livelihoods depend on maintaining -- and promoting growth in industries that produce animal-based food.

Guess what that "partnership" is called?
L.E.A.P. -- the UNFAO's
Livestock, Environmental,
Assessment & Performance
PARNERSHIP
It's all spelled out right here on their website:
This list should be called the powerful group of foxes who are guarding the henhouses.

They are the world's gigantic, Earth-wrecking, deforesting industries who, collectively, are doing more to drive climate change than all other drivers combined.

Here are the UN's "partners" in promoting animal-based foods, the industries who prosper when people eat more animals.
Back to Bill Gates
& the Not-So-Magnificent-Seven
Why am I picking on Bill Gates and not the other members of this group? After all, none of them are telling the world the complete truth about the leading drivers of climate change.

I am writing about Gates because he was just in the news last week -- featured in this latest story in Apple News. I will feature some of the content along with his image below.

As for the entire Not-so-Magnificent-Seven pictured above, I am most disappointed with Al Gore as I stated earlier in this SOS Memo.

As alluded to earlier, he knows that telling the truth about the wildly popular, typical western diet's outsized role in promoting climate change would not be received well and, that doing so, would likely lessen the widespread admiration that he now enjoys on the world stage.

I have documented the failings of Mr. Gore in earlier SOS Memos such as the two in 2022 that are referenced here:

Back to the recent Bill Gates
article on Apple News about this topic, entitled:
Bill Gates optimistic about future of fake meats, plant-based foods
He was asked his opinion on the climate situation and plant-based diets during his annual Reddit AMA.
Gates said he backed several fake meat companies, despite predicting many people won't opt to be vegan. "I think eventually these products will be very good even though their share is small today," Gates said.

In the statements below, Bill appears to be in favor of a gradual shift away from animal agriculture. Unfortunately, a gradual shift is not going to bode well for our future as a species.

In fact, what he is suggesting would virtually guarantee that we will NOT downsize the animal agriculture industry to any significant extent for forty or fifty years. In other words, what he is suggesting would virtually guarantee the extinction of humanity well before 2200.

He also fails to even mention the ability of whole, plant-based foods to totally reverse most chronic diseases, including type2 diabetes, heart disease and many cancers. Lab-grown meat will be no more healthful for humans than the flesh from pigs, cattle, chickens and sheep.

Apparently, he owns stock in some of the "fake meat" companies -- and he makes it crystal clear to me that he has no clue whatsoever about the outsized role that animal agriculture is playing in climate change.

Hardly anyone is talking about the main problem associated with animal agriculture -- the ongoing loss of forests to make room for growing feed or grazing of the billions of farm animals.
Mr. Gates also does not seem to appreciate the outsized role that whole, plant-based foods could play in downsizing the massive and mighty (nearly ten trillion dollar) global "disease management" industry that prefers to go by the name of "health-care."

From the article: "Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates weighed in on the future of meat alternatives during his annual Ask Me Anything session on Reddit."

Here are nine of his comments, none of which are going to make a bit of difference in saving our species (SOS). It is almost laughable to read what one of the smartest, richest men in the world has to say about the most important topic in the history of humanity.

The 67-year-old billionaire fielded questions about a variety of topics from Redditors, including the climate and veganism -- prompting Gates to share his optimism about plant-based meats.
  1. "There are companies making 'beef' in new ways and people working to still use cows but reduce the methane emissions."
  2. "I think eventually these products will be very good even though their share is small today," he added.
  3. Gates said he has backed meat alternative brands Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods, and Upside Foods (formerly known as Memphis Meats).
  4. However, the billionaire said he was less hopeful about the likelihood of the general public turning to veganism to save the climate.
  5. "For people who want to go vegan, that is great, but I don't think most people will do that," he wrote.
  6. The philanthropist concluded his answers to climate-related questions by emphasizing he believes it all comes down to cost, no matter which industry is being discussed.
  7. "The key on climate is making the clean products as cheap as the dirty products in every area of emission — planes, concrete, meat etc," Gates said.
  8. "This is the only way we can ask all the countries in the world to change. If it costs a lot extra we won't succeed."
  9. He went on to name "climate innovation" as one of the four things he's excited about for 2023.

As suggested earlier, with the exception of Al Gore, all of the other well-known male leaders in the photo below are just suffering from the same condition that Mr. Gates suffers from:

Ignorance of the true impact of animal agriculture
on our lives, our children's lives -- and our
impending demise as a species.
The un-informed six men in this photo are no more guilty than most of the so-called leaders in the world today.

They all grew up eating meat, dairy, eggs and fish -- and have truly believed the myths that they have been told all their lives. I actually feel sorry for them.

Most of us alive today were born with meat being an integral and emotional part of our society, a topic that I wrote about a few weeks ago.

It's still not too late for Al Gore to come clean and tell the world the complete truth about climate change. Sadly, I don't think that he ever will.

Finally, I am hopeful that the women listed below can turn
this dismal situation into a brand new opportunity for all of humankind. And I would dearly love to help them get it done.
The Bottom Line
The seven feckless men should be replaced
with nine women of courage & integrity
Let's figure out a way to connect with one or more of these nine women and many others who share their unusually high levels of courage and integrity.

Many of you reading this SOS today may know people who know people who know some of these nine influential women with courage and integrity. Let's fill up their in-box and make their cell phones ring. If you know them, call them. If not, send them this link to today's SOS Memo:

I'm happy to go anywhere, anytime -- to further our chances of inspiring these powerful women, and many others like them, to join together and rally the entire world around the truth.

The future of the world's children is riding on that truth being embraced by influential world leaders ASAP.
After Greta, Jane, Kate and Sylvia further enlighten Oprah, Michelle, Angela, Melinda and Liz -- regarding the miracles of plant-based eating -- they will all know what to do!

And they will do it with grace, dignity & constancy of purpose. I will gladly assist whatever team emerges that is focused on maximizing the chances that humanity will survive. That process should begin with something like this assessment that comprised a chapter from our 2020 book OUTCRY:

Ending today with a new video from the UK and a final word from our creator
The first (just five minutes) is entitled: "Would You Go Vegan for A million pounds?" It was produced by Klaus Mitchell of Plant-Based News in the UK and was posted just four days ago in England.
Once again. Our creator gets the final word in this conversation with her after a 50,000 year absence.

And she ain't happy. A very revealing and entertaining 15-minute video. Watch it and share it with everyone you know.
Finally, are you among the rare group of humans who are taking the direct connection between food choices, your own health and climate change seriously? If so, I would love to collaborate with you. Contact me and tell me your story: jmorrishicks@me.com.

Here are handy links to my five most-recent SOS Memos (in chronological order) on this same theme. It's always the same theme...as long as our children's futures are in peril.

FREE: Two "Big Picture" Books
Our health. Our planet. Our future as a species.
Here is the first book we are now offering FREE to the world public: a quick and easy read that I published with Stuart Scott in 2020. Just click below for individual links to every chapter.

To our knowledge, OUTCRY is the only book ever published that features a summary of "outcries" from the natural world, along with consensus conclusions of nine big picture scientists regarding our dilemma — AND an envisioned sustainable civilization of the future, using today’s technology.

We also call this book the "User's Guide for Planet Earth." In mid 2022, we began giving this book away free of charge.

We are giving it away because of this troubling fact that was stated by Jeremy Rifkin early in this recent 15-minute video:

"the most important info in all of humanity
is going undiscussed."

We're talking about the crucial information regarding how we can possibly slow or stop climate change within a few years.

Want to help relieve the desperate situation in which we find ourselves, read OUTCRY as soon as you can and send it to everyone you know. Just click on the book cover above.
Here is the 2nd book that is now free: a quick and easy read that I wrote with Dr. Kerry Graff in 2015.

Using the Power of Food
to Heal Ourselves and Our Planet

This compact book is still highly relevant, focusing on helping people take charge of their health and reverse chronic disease by urgently shifting to a whole-food, plant-based way of eating.

A fringe benefit of their efforts is the steady downsizing of the leading driver of climate change: animal agriculture. Merely suggesting that the masses cut back on their meat, dairy, egg and fish consumption will accomplish very little.

We want everyone to completely eliminate all animal-based foods from their diet. Yes, that includes cheese, eggs and all forms of seafood

For your children and grandchildren, just do it!
Please share today's timely SOS Memo with everyone.

What about the "preservation" of civilization?
To clarify, we're not trying to preserve civilization as we know it. Because what we have now is extremely wasteful, harmful and grossly unsustainable. It's an incredibly reckless way of living that is now threatening our very existence as a species.

We're talking about replacing it with an entirely new, ultra-green civilization of the future -- and we do our best to paint a picture of that envisioned way of sustainable living in OUTCRY. For what one Ohio State professor emeritus of history had to say about that book on Amazon, click here.
As for making our stand on the only planet in the universe capable of keeping us alive, our "Big Picture" section below will provide you with handy reference materials on this most crucial of all topics.

Five World-Changing Films
That People Everywhere Must See
Film #1 in 2014
In 2014, Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn produced their first documentary film Cowspiracy. Executive producer is Leonardo DiCaprio, it runs 90 minutes and has been on Netflix since 2015. In 2020, I met Kip and Keegan in Sedona where I was honored to be able to speak at the same conference with them and other great leaders in this movement like Dr. Sailesh Rao and Dr. Michael Greger.
Film #2 in 2017
Also on Netflix, Kip and Keegan teamed up again in 2017 to produce What the Health, which is also on Netflix. It runs 92 minutes and may be the best documentary ever that focuses on the health reasons for choosing to eat plant-based. Click here to watch the short trailer. You can also watch the full movie for free on Vimeo.
Film #3 in 2021
In 2021, Kip Anderson teamed up with British filmmaker Ali Tabrizi, to produce Seaspiracy, an 89-minute film that vividly and alarmingly reveals what is at stake when it comes to the crucial importance of our oceans to our future as a species. Most people have no idea regarding the environmental horrors of commercial fishing -- a disgusting industry that kills dolphins by the thousands and tosses them back into the ocean. It runs 90 minutes on Netflix. Click here to view the trailer.
Film #4 in 2021
As our situation becomes more desperate, the documentary films become more terrifying. As alluded to earlier, we are literally Eating Our Way to Extinction, a process that is vividly covered in this 2021 film (81 minutes). Narrated and produced by Kate Winslet, you can watch this great film on Amazon Prime or on YouTube for $3.99. The great ocean scientist and former head of NOAA, Dr. Sylvia Earle lends powerful credibility to such a crucial topic.
Film #5 in 2022
This new film (89 minutes) features a young activist who travels around his country, New Zealand in an effort to find out the truth about the horrors of the dairy industry in his native land.

The film uncovers alarming information about the environmental and health impacts of the industry -- leading up to the discovery that we are on the edge of the biggest global disruption of food and agriculture in history. This new film is now available for $2.99 on Vimeo.
Grasping the "Big Picture"
These 2 films will help in understanding
our unprecedented dilemma.
This 83-minute documentary is all about the findings that were documented in Dr. Stephen Emmott's 2013 book. TEN BILLION.

He brilliantly describes the grossly unsustainable way of living that has brought us to the emergency situation in which we find ourselves. Since I met him in London in 2013, he has become much more serious about the need to abolish the practice of eating meat, dairy, eggs and/or fish at almost every meal.

Just click on the hourglass image. Dr. Emmott delivers a very compelling message from the stage of a theater in London. This 2013 film is still relevant and will certainly help more people grasp that all-important "big picture."
Finally, this half-hour video was published in November of 2021. It was produced by Michael Dowd, a non-scientific researcher like me who does a very fine job of explaining the many facets of the obstacles standing between us and our survival as a species.

As do practically all researchers, Dowd focuses entirely on the problem; not the solution. I prefer to focus on both.
What else can you do?
Probably a lot more than you think
  • Start with the new documentary (Film #4) mentioned earlier -- Eating our way to Extinction for $6 on Netflix. Watch it often with your friends and family.
  • Share this SOS Memo widely: Certainties, Uncertainties & Priorities by J. Morris Hicks.
  • Get an e-copy of OUTCRY. Visit Outcry page on Amazon and get a much bigger understanding of the situation in which all humans find ourselves.
  • Inform all the young people in your world that you are deadly serious about this topic. Urge them to read these SOS Memos and our latest book, OUTCRY.
  • Completely stop eating meat, dairy, eggs and fish today and tell everyone why you are taking such a "radical" step. You're doing it for the innocent children of the world.
  • As noted above, do yourself a favor and make sure that your plant-based meals of the future consist of whole plants -- the kinds of foods that prevent or reverse most chronic diseases AND enable your body to effortlessly seek its optimal weight.
I am confident that if a few million people carefully read and digested this book that there would be a more robust conversation around the world regarding our grossly unsustainable way of living in the developed world.

To my knowledge, OUTCRY remains the only book ever published that features an envisioned, totally-green, ultra-sustainable, super-desirable, future way of living for humans -- along with ideas for how we might get there as quickly as possible.

The links below to earlier SOS Memos will help you understand how these ideas unfolded since 2018.
