Dear Valued Community Partners –

I hope this update finds you safe and well after the recent severe storms our area experienced. We've had an eventful and rewarding month engaging with our wonderful community.

A major highlight was participating in the 16th Annual Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade, where I had the tremendous honor of serving as a Grand Marshal. To be recognized by this historic community on such a symbolic day is an accolade I will forever cherish. Words cannot express my gratitude.

Following the parade, our annual Juneteenth celebration at Lone Star College-Houston North Victory was a resounding success. Over 650 community members joined us for BBQ, snow cones, lively Zydeco music, and activities for kids.

We would like to give a special thanks to Mayor Emeritus Sylvester Turner, State Senator Molly Cook, State Representative Jolanda Jones, HCC Trustee/Democratic Primary Candidate for State Representative District 139 Charlene Johnson, and Lone Star College Foundation Board member Dr. Alton Smith for joining us at the celebration along with fellow Grand Marshals Janice Weaver and the family of the late State Representative Al Edwards who is known as the “Father of Juneteenth”.

Most meaningful to me were the individuals who expressed interest in pursuing higher education, with one remarking, "It's been thirty years since I was in college, I think it's time for me to come back and get my degree." Impacting lives through education is our core mission.

Additionally, we launched a new cohort for our Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) nutrition class in partnership with Be Well Acres Homes, a MD Anderson initiative. Community members are learning to create nutritious meals using air fryers. ALL programs provide enrichment opportunities tailored for adults aged 50 and over.

Lastly, through collaboration with the City of Houston, we began our first Empowering Solar training cohort. This free program equips students with skills to install solar panels on residential and commercial properties under the guidance of our newest esteemed instructor, Professor Caelan Aubourgh. Another cohort will follow this fall.

In the coming months, I look forward to highlighting exciting upcoming initiatives, including the launch of club sports, our inaugural Phi Theta Kappa chapter, and the expansion of our Victory location.

Thank you for your continued support as valued community partners. It is an honor to serve alongside you.

What is the C.A.R.E. Center?

At Lone Star College-Houston North, we believe that with the right structure, and the right support, our students can be successful inside and outside of the classroom.

Our Panther Pact Emergency Fund is a safety net for our students, with 100% of the proceeds helping them directly.

We are the most diverse Lone Star College institution and our locations exist in the lowest-income sections of our system’s service area. However, for the past three years, our students have continually had some of the highest completion rates within the system.

We invested a lot of time into developing partnerships so we can help students in a cost-efficient manner. We've helped students remove barriers such as food insecurity, clothing and toiletry needs, textbook costs, as well as a technology divide.

Your contribution will directly support a student in continuing their legacy.
