New to the One Health Conversation? Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

This initiative is intended to help those seeking One Health speakers for their events (conferences, academic lectures, interviews, student events, invited guest speakers, etc.) to network and more easily identify and reach out to potential speakers. Professionals from all disciplines, backgrounds, locations, levels of training and career stages are welcome to put themselves forward as available One Health Speakers. One Health Quadripartite Calls for next group of Experts to Serve
on the One Health High Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP)
October 6, 2023. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), collectively, the Quadripartite collaboration on One Health, established the OHHLEP in 2021 to provide them with scientific advice in their support of Governments to implement and scale up the OH approach…. The OHHLEP has just completed its first (2 year) term. See the Terms of Reference. Call for expression of interest to design the Terms of Reference of the Competency Package on One Health of the WOAH Competency-based Training Framework
In its Competency-based Training Framework, WOAH is dedicating one Competency Package (#11) to One Health, with the purpose to inform, design, and develop learning resources to promote a holistic and collaborative approach to health, acknowledging the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. The foundational document of this Competency Package, the Terms of Reference, will not only assist WOAH in enhancing the quality and consistency of training offered but will also provide WOAH members with the elements they need for development of their own training plans and for incorporating WOAH's One Health trainings into their programmes. One Health at the World Health Summit 2023 -
Theme: A Defining Year for Global Health Action
Berlin, Germany. The World Health Summit 2023 brought together stakeholders from all sectors and regions in over 60 sessions to discuss the most pressing global health topics under the theme. On page 11, in his Welcome Message, High Patron of the Summit, France’s President Emmanuel Macron made these comments: “If we want to be efficient in tackling health challenges, we have to accelerate our cooperation on other pressing global issues, climate change, conflicts, population growth, and urbanization. G20 Chief Science Advisors Round Table (CSAR) deliberates on One Health and highlights action items
August 28, 2023, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India.
As part of the inaugural track of G20-Chief Science Advisers’ Roundtable (G20-CSAR) under the Indian Presidency, the science advisors of G20 countries collectively deliberated and expressed their commitment towards common priorities during the Indian G20 Presidency. One of those priorities was 'Opportunities in One Health for better disease prevention, control, and pandemic preparedness'. The Advisors recognise that interdependent health threats to human, animal, plant and environmental health should be addressed collectively through the One Health approach. They emphasise the need for exploring virtual spaces for collaborations and capacity development for knowledge and technologies related to disease control such as disease modeling and epidemic intelligence, environmental and pathogen surveillance, and other critical tools. The GHSA is a group of more than 70 countries, international organizations and non-government organizations, and private sector companies that acknowledges the essential need for a multilateral and multi-sectoral approach to strengthen both the global capacity and nations’ capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious threats. To realize this vision, the GHSA leverages and complements the strengths and resources of multi-sectoral and multilateral partners to address priorities and gaps in efforts to build and improve country capacity and leadership in the prevention and early detection of, and effective response to, infectious disease threats.

Creation of a new LANCET Commission
on Prevention of Viral Spillover
The Lancet and the Coalition for Preventing Pandemics at the Source (PPATS) have convened a new Commission on Prevention of Viral Spillover. It will work to mobilise decision makers and implementers to take trans-disciplinary action to limit viral spillovers through research, policy, law, and practice—thereby reducing the risk of future pandemics while promoting a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable future. This new Commission will:
- evaluate and synthesise the evidence on the drivers of viral spillovers;
- identify and evaluate strategies and interventions to prevent viral spillovers;
- provide recommendations for research investigating viral spillovers;
- examine the equity benefits of viral spillover prevention;
- assess the co-benefits and trade-offs of viral spillover prevention;
- identify social, economic, and political challenges and opportunities for implementing viral spillover prevention
- develop recommendations for viral spillover prevention that can be adopted and adapted by governments and other stakeholders.

U.S. FDA’s new Animal and Veterinary Innovation Agenda
calls for modernizing regulations and enhancing
the One Health workforce
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a campaign to support innovation in animal biotechnology, veterinary products, and animal feed through greater “regulatory flexibility, predictability, and efficiency.” The Animal and Veterinary Innovation Agenda released by FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has four objectives:
- Support technologies and products addressing priority needs
- Align regulatory pathways to the modern landscape
- Enhance the One Health workforce for the future of innovation
- Address gaps in new technologies and emerging health threats

The One Health European Joint Program (OH EJP)
Final Report 2023
The One Health EJP Final Report 2023 is now available on the OHEJP website. The One Health EJP ended on 30th September 2023. The Final Report acts as a One Health EJP legacy document to benefit future One Health initiatives and programmes in Europe and globally. The report celebrates over five years of this programme's One Health achievements focused on antimicrobial resistance, foodborne zoonoses and emerging threats. It demonstrates how European stakeholders across food safety, animal and public health sectors have applied OHEJP science to their work. Washington State One Health Needs Assessment
Report released
In the state of Washington, USA, a One Health Collaborative is the primary coordinating platform for government agencies to connect with each other and with partner institutions. Participating state agencies include DOH, Washington State Department of Agriculture, and Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. ‘Global and One Health’ is one of five priorities in the 2022-2024 Washington State Department of Health (DOH) Transformational Plan. To address the priorities, a needs assessment workshop was held in March 2023 to promote One Health understanding; foster collaborations and partnerships; facilitate One Health conversations around pre-identified One Health topics; and prioritize One Health actions by assessing readiness and impact. Four case studies exemplified the topics of discussion. Five One Health actions were identified as highest priority:
- Addressing antimicrobial resistance in Washington through collaborative efforts, joint advocacy, training, and data sharing for improved antimicrobial stewardship and monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, and the environment.
- Optimizing cross-sectoral data interoperability through standardization and improved data sharing processes, ultimately developing a cross-cutting One Health data system for human, animal, and environmental health and inclusive of data from state, local, private, institutional, and tribal sectors to enable joint visualization and analysis.
- Moving preventive work upstream using a One Health lens to promote health equity through cross-sectoral relationship building, collaboration, and advocacy.
- Improving outbreak/pandemic preparedness and response through joint advocacy, public engagement, data sharing, and strengthened cross-sectoral collaboration, especially for zoonotic and vector-borne diseases.
- Conducting agency-level data and surveillance needs assessments and advocating for optimal data and surveillance for tracking and reporting.

Pak One Health Alliance Project Report

In Pakistan like other countries the routine/formal indicator based surveillance systems are fairly established and are functioning specially in the health sector. But no attention has yet been paid for the development and grooming of non-formal surveillance systems (e.g. Event Based Surveillance). Despite its huge potential for tapping low cost large amount of disease data from informal data sources (like print, social and electronic media) no attention has been paid for this.

“The proportion of students who did not know that many diseases affecting humans come from animals is 28.96% while 32.16% of them did not know what a zoonosis is. The circularity of the One Health concept related to the transmission of diseases from animals to humans and vice-versa is not understood from a large prevalence of the adolescents with 31.40 and 59.91% of wrong responses, respectively. Furthermore, rabies is not considered as a dangerous disease by 23.02% of the adolescents. After two theoretical-practical classroom sessions, the correct answers improved to 21.92% according to the different question. More than a third of the student cohort investigated showed a profound ignorance of the zoonotic risks and a poor understanding of the One Health concept. The French: Agence française de développement (ADF) is a French public financial institution that implements policy defined by the French Government. It works to fight poverty and promote sustainable development. The One Sustainable Health for All Forum in Lyon in early July this year examined ways to anticipate - and potentially ward off - future outbreaks of disease by improving international health surveillance networks. “An Introduction to Human Babesiosis”
New Course on the Tick-borne Disease
Hosted by Invisible International, this new, free, clinician oriented, One Health framed course discusses how to diagnose and treat infections caused by babesia, a malaria-like protozoan parasite that can be transmitted through tick bites, blood transfusions, and organ transplants, or congenitally from mother to fetus. The parasite babesia lives in red blood cells. The course also discusses the global distribution of babesia and a new species of babesia, B. odocoilei, which may be causing unrecognized disease. Babesiosis is an emerging infectious disease yet many clinicians have had no or very little training about it. This can lead to missed diagnoses and increased morbidity for patients The primary goal of this free CME offering is for clinicians to become aware and to include babesiosis in their differential diagnosis, when clinically appropriate. The Quadripartite-Led AMR Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform
The collaboration between the FAO, UNEP, WHO and WOAH – known as Quadripartite – has established the AMR Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform in response to the recommendation in the IACG report, No time to wait: Securing the future from drug-resistant infections, to “establish a constituency-based partnership platform to develop and work towards a shared global vision, goals and coordinated action on AMR. The Platform is an inclusive, international and multi-stakeholder venue that brings together actors across the human–animal–plant–environmental interface to assist in preserving antimicrobials as lifesaving medicines and ensuring their responsible use under a One Health approach. October 9, 2023 the Quadripartite announced the creation of a new Working Group on Youth Engagement for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) that will inform and guide the Quadripartite efforts to raise awareness and include young people in global AMR action….. The call for expressions of interest saw an overwhelming response. Fourteen members from 14 countries and representing 14 youth-serving or youth-led organizations were selected based on their backgrounds, actively considering the need for sectoral, gender and geographical representation. They will contribute actively to AMR activities and campaigns and help define strategies to influence a wider set of youth-led or youth-serving organizations in the global response to AMR. Their inaugural meeting was held from 5-6 October 2023. The members are:

Université Paris Cité One Health-Emerging Infectious Diseases Graduate School
Paris, France. Université Paris Cité is a public research university created by decree on 20 March 2019, resulting from the merger of Paris Descartes (Paris V) and Paris Diderot (Paris VII) universities. The Graduate School of One Health-Emerging Infectious Diseases offers a multidisciplinary vision on global health with an Emerging Infectious Diseases Master course (MIE), a PhD programme and continuing education. “Bats harbor many viruses that can spill over to humans. It’s time to leave bats and their habitats undisturbed. The evidence is clear: The Covid-19 pandemic can be traced back to a bat virus. The same was true for the 2003 SARS coronavirus outbreak. In such outbreaks, we are unlikely to be able to determine whether the spillover happened because someone ate or handled an infected bat, was exposed to a bat’s bodily fluids in a cave or some other way, or came into contact with another animal that had been infected by a bat. Even if human contact with a virus happened in a lab, the virus still would have originally come from a bat. What’s important is that we don’t need to know all of the details in order to take meaningful action.”

Preventing Pandemics through the Rule of Law: Strengthening Countries’ Legal Preparedness for Public Health Emergencies
Issue Brief released by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO).
To support timely and effective action, countries must be prepared well in advance, including legally, to ensure that systems for preventing, managing and responding to public health emergencies (PHEs) are in place and well-functioning. The rule of law provides guidance and tools to strengthen States’ legal preparedness for PHEs. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, IDLO has supported low and middle-income countries to strengthen a rule of law-based response to public health emergencies. This issue brief elaborates on the key rule of law building blocks to guide countries to better prevent, prepare and respond to public health emergencies.

New One Health and Planetary Health - framed Resources for Health Professionals
Launched by the Stanford School of Medicine Center for Innovation in Global Health and the University of Washington Center for One Health Research. This is an Open Access collection of clinical case studies supporting health professionals in providing effective care for patients on a changing planet. Collated from clinical encounters around the world, these case studies assist health professionals in recognizing and treating a variety of health challenges impacted by environmental stressors. They reveal the value of physician-veterinarian communication/collaboration and of recognizing animals as "sentinels" of shared environmental health hazards. The cases span infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, malnutrition, heat stress, physical trauma, mental health concerns, and more calling for an expanded approach to taking a patient’s medical history. Clinicians are already trained to look out for social determinants of health – considering occupation, lifestyle, and other key factors. Now, in a rapidly changing environment, clinicians must go a step further – considering how environmental stressors, such as extreme heat, wildfires, food access, widespread pollution, and more, are impacting a patient’s health. COVID-19 has demonstrated that the coordinated actions of individuals and decision makers can make a difference to the outcome of a grave threat to society. This review paper presents a meta-analysis of the literature demonstrating how land use change, environmental degradation and climate change increase the risk of emerging infectious diseases, which can seriously impact human health and society. This paper provides evidence of how a focus on economic growth without sustainable production and consumption processes has led to higher risk of future pandemics. While many previous studies have pointed at these risks, we propose that recent experiences with COVID-19 present the potential to turn society toward more socially, economically and environmentally sustainable ways of production, consumption and landscape management.

An uptick of confirmed leprosy cases in Florida [USA] is resparking the debate of the disease's possible connection to nine-banded armadillos, USA Today reported Oct. 3. In August, the CDC said leprosy, or Hansen's disease, could be becoming endemic in the Southeast — where armadillos often reside. Breaking Barriers: Advancing the One Health Agenda with a Focus on Environment
Organized by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, the Quadripartite Collaboration on One Health, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the German Agency for International Cooperation and the International Alliance against Health Risks in Wildlife Trade. In 2019, representatives from governments, civil society, and scientists from around the world, came together at the “One Planet, One Health, One Future” conference in Berlin, to collaboratively develop an updated framework for the One Health approach. A key outcome of the event were the Berlin Principles, which reaffirm the importance of undertaking an interdisciplinary approach to health, underpinned by a shared understanding that healthy, intact ecosystems provide a critical foundation for present and future health and wellbeing. Following the Conferences of the Parties on climate (CoP27) and biodiversity (CoP15), momentum must now be built on these conferences by garnering commitments for global collaboration and action, and meaningful integration of the environmental perspective in One Health initiatives. Film Screening of Documentary “Stopping the Next Pandemic” and Post Screening Panel Discussion’
The St. Louis Zoo hosted a screening of the Cannes World Film Festival January 2023 Winner for Best Environmental Film, "Stopping the Next Pandemic." This film highlighted the work being done globally as scientists race to prevent future outbreaks following the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has made acutely evident how all environments are interconnected and interdependent — the premise of One Health. We live in a connected world, and now even diseases that start in remote places present a concern for global health. A 45-minute panel discussion followed the film, moderated by Dr. Kelly Lane-deGraaf of Fontbonne University in St. Louis. Panelists included Dr. Sharon Deem of the Saint Louis Zoo and Drs. Hosted by the International Alliance against Health Risks of Wildlife Trade. Prof. Dr. Jan Felix Drexler, Charité virologist, discussed the animal origins of zoonotic viruses and anthropogenic changes facilitating virus emergence. Dr. Drexler has worked as a staff scientist and professor in Brazil, Germany and the Netherlands. Xi'an, Shaanxi province, China. Under the guidance of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, this summit was held by OAE Publishing Inc. and was supported by One Health Implementation Research (OHIR) of OAE Publishing Inc., Science in One Health (SOH) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Elsevier, and Chinese Consortium for One Health. The summit aimed to gather outstanding Chinese scholars and young researchers who focus on zoonoses and ecological health to discuss advanced knowledge and research results, and to promote the implementation of the One Health approach to public health. There is a need for the primary prevention of pandemics through the implementation of preventive measures against both natural spillovers and spillovers from research-related activities. The prevention of natural spillovers would require a One Health approach—an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of people, animals and ecosystems495—including the strengthening of veterinary services, the regulation of trade in domestic and wild animals and of wildlife and livestock rearing, the prevention of deforestation, and the enhancement of pathogen-surveillance systems in domestic animals and in humans.496 Such measures are likely to be highly cost effective and would complement investments in the strengthening of national health systems, the development of vaccines and therapeutics, and other outbreak response strategies described in this report. Strategies to prevent research-related releases should include stronger international and national oversight of biosafety, biosecurity, and biorisk management, including the strict regulation of gain of function research of concern.
