The River Mile Mission Statement
To foster investigation and understanding of our watersheds and to promote watershed health

The River Mile is…
…a network of educators, students, resource managers, scientists and environmental educators in the Columbia River watershed and beyond sharing what they know and learn about best practices, lessons learned, examples of participation, links to resources and collecting and sharing real world scientific data.  It is a participant-driven approach to learning, researching and exploring the watershed health of the Columbia River and beyon.

Students and teachers are engaged in the practices of scientists and resource  managers as they become intimately familiar with their  outdoor classroom by spending time in the field inventorying, monitoring, analyzing, investigating and researching site discoveries.

Using Free ArcGIS Online to Collect, Analyze, and Share Data

Meet NGSS & Common Core Standards with Crayfish/Freshwater Studies & More!

A Joint Education Training Opportunity

Presented by:

The River Mile Network, Lake Roosevelt Forum, Environmental Protection Agency, Engaging Every Student, The Reach Museum

Co-Facilitators: Janice Elvidge, M.S. The River Mile, Rick Reynolds, M.S.Ed. from Engaging Every Student and The River Mile network (TRM)

Grades: Targeted to grades 4–12; adaptable for all non-formal and formal educators

Please bring: Your own laptop, filled water bottle.

Join us for this free hands-on workshop where we will explore how to use ArcGIS Online to collect, analyze, and share data. We will step you through how ArcGIS can be used to engage students in real-life science investigations and meet the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards.

Learn how TRM’s network of educators and students have been helping biologists and wildlife managers by collecting and presenting data on native and invasive crayfish, as well as water quality, and how ArcGIS can be used to implement countless other scientific inquiries with students. Participants will create ArcGIS Online maps and add information and data layers to them, in addition to utilizing other digital and non-digital data collection/analysis tools, such as those used to measure water quality.

Join the Study and Contribute Valuable Data!

Ever wondered if there are crayfish in a lake or stream? Have you seen crayfish near you? Help scientists by locating and identifying crayfish, then sharing your data through The River Mile's Crayfish Study!

The River Mile Network has teamed up with the University of Illinois and the University of Washington scientists! Data from this project will help inform researchers about the species distribution throughout the Columbia River Watershed and beyond.

After this training you have the ability to join the study and state research permit.  Without the research permit, data may be collected May 1 to October 31 in Washington with a valid state fishing license and in waters open to crayfish fishing.

Anything you can do to help researchers will be of benefit!
