Center for TB - Researcher Spotlight
Paul Ogongo, PhD
Did anything surprise you while conducting your research?
We have taken a unique approach of monitoring T-cell responses to individual distinct Mtb antigens as opposed to Mtb antigen pools. What we have found exciting, yet unexpected, is our observation that a set of less studied antigens elicit a robust interleukin-17 (IL-17) responses while the more commonly studied antigens do not. This observation is important for two reasons; (i) it provides additional evidence of the existence of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) independent T-cell immunity in Mtb exposed individuals, and (ii) it demonstrates that distinct Mtb antigens elicit different T-cell responses, and we hypothesize that the differences in responses determine the outcome of Mtb infection. We are currently conducting experiments to test this hypothesis.

Center for TB - Faculty Update
Sara Suliman, PhD, MPH
Sara Suliman, PhD, MPH is recognized as an outstanding young TB investigator, having already made contributions to TB biomarker discovery, TB immunology, and human genetic determinants of TB risk. At UCSF, Sara will expand the work on candidate risk genes to dissect mechanisms of progression to active TB disease and validating better point-of-care biomarkers to determine risk of progression to TB disease. She also plans to study the immune responses to Mtb and SARS-CoV-2 in co-infected patients. Sara comes to us from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Sara will have her appointment in the UCSF/ZSFG Division of Experimental Medicine led by Dr. Joel Ernst. 
January 2022 CFAR Seminar
ESI Speaker - Rachel Rutishauser, MD, PhD
Rachel will be be giving a presentation on "Harnessing CD8+ T cells for HIV cure" at the January 2022 CFAR Seminar.

The keynote speaker, Larry Corey, MD, is a PI at HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) and a Professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and The University of Washington, Departments of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, and Medicine. He will be speaking on HIV Science - the NASA of COVID-19 Vaccines: Can the Gift Be Returned?

UCPath Notice: Important Year-End Tax and Payroll Reminders
January 10, 2022: Tax information deadlines
UCPath will begin to process W-2s in late January. To ensure the information on your W-2 is complete, accurate, and reaches you, please take the following steps by January 10, 2022:
  • Verify your personal email and home address on UCPath. Even if you signed up for an electronic W-2, it's important that UC can reach you.
  • Verify your dependents. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires UC to make reasonable efforts to obtain Social Security numbers for employees, their spouses/domestic partners, and dependents. To review or update your dependent information, log in to UCPath, then select Employee Actions > Health and Welfare > Dependent Coverage.
  • Sign up for a W-2 notification. You will receive a notification that your W-2 is available to view online on UCPath. To sign up, log in to UCPath, then select Employee Actions > Income and Taxes > Enroll to receive online W-2.
  • International workers: Verify your GLACIER account information. International employees may receive a W-2 or 1042-S (Foreign Person's U.S. Source Income Subject to Withholding). To ensure your tax information is sent correctly, verify that your personal email and home addresses match exactly on UCPath and the GLACIER tax database. You may also opt to have an electronic 1042-S through GLACIER. Learn more about Form 1042-S.

Campus Safety and Holiday Security
Over the past 2-months, there have been several reports of on-campus auto burglaries; vandalized vehicles; attempted bike thefts, and a car-fire that resulted from the vehicle being driven into the staircase of one of the campus buildings.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, and Sheriff's Deputies were able to capture the individuals involved in these incidents.

Increased campus patrols will be conducted to deter loitering and suspicious activity, and personal safety escorts are provided 24/7, by calling 415-206-8062 (x68063). Please provide a 20-minute lead time for escort appointments.

Traditionally, during the standard time-change and the holiday season, crime increases. Thieves prey on pedestrians walking alone, and vehicles left unattended with packages or personal belongings visibly inside. Most of these crimes are crimes of opportunity, which in many cases can be avoided.
