Lifelong Learning

Connect with a Classic Banned Book:

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Mon., Feb. 3, 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Steinbeck's 1937 novella describes the experiences of two displaced migrant ranch workers as they move from place to place in California seeking jobs during the Great Depression and is based on Steinbeck's own experiences working along migrant farm workers in the 1910’s. The book appears on the American Library Association‘s list of the Top 100 Banned/Challenged Books. Instructor Kathy Allman will help us to understand elements such as theme, symbolism, and character development, as well as some of the notable passages. Join us for a robust discussion of this American classic.

Make a plate of delicious chocolate-dipped fruit for your sweetheart (or yourself)! Tiffany Lewis of Milk Me Treats will teach the group how to make chocolate-dipped strawberries and other seasonal fruits. Enjoy snacks and sparkling wine during the class and go home with a plate of goodies!

Eleanor Roosevelt: American Politician, Diplomat, and Activist

(3 parts) Thursdays: Feb. 13, 20, and 27, from 10 – 11:30 am

Historians consider Eleanor Roosevelt the most active and progressive thinking First Lady with her accomplishments as social reformer, voracious writer, and fearless advocate for civil rights. The First Lady advocated for immigrants; created after-school care for working mothers; originated the first commune for homeless mineworkers in West Virginia; and worked directly with African Americans regarding civil rights legislation.
