Dear TBAISD staff,
Amazingly, so many of our TBAISD staff throughout our organization have been engaged in the book study of Dr. Brene Brown’s work,
Dare to Lead
. Thank you to those who have been following the text and participating in discussion surrounding the concepts of leadership. “Daring leadership is ultimately about serving other people, not ourselves” (page 69). Staying true to those words, I am blown away by the countless examples of our staff demonstrating “daring leadership” in our classrooms, schools, centers, homes, and communities.
Dr. Brown reminds us that leaders must invest a reasonable amount of time attending to and
listening
to the individuals they serve in order to positively move an organization forward. To that end, I am grateful for our
SAIL Climate and Culture Committee
who have engaged in a number of strategies and activities to invite staff to meet and reflect on the wonderful happenings within our organization and suggest areas that we might improve.
One such activity is
Coffee with the Superintendent
. We have had three sessions to date, and I am grateful to those who have attended. Thank you for your candid comments and supportive remarks. It is clear, we have incredibly talented individuals who care deeply about the success of TBAISD and the students we serve. If you have not attended a session, consider one of the following dates:
- February 28, Administration Building, 3:00 p.m.
- March 5, Traverse Heights Elementary, 7:30 a.m.
- March 10, Oak Park Elementary, 7:15 a.m.
- March 17, New Campus School, 2:45 p.m.
If these sessions do not fit in your schedule, please reach out to me next time you see me in your building, or stop in and let’s talk if
you find yourself at the Arnell Administration building
!
In addition to TBAISD’s value of
Listening
, we also want to highlight the value of
Excellence
. Two of our many amazing programs recently received state and/or national recognition:
- CTC Information Technology Program
- Adult Community Experience YouthWork Corps
The
2020 MASB Michigan Best Program award
went to CTC instructor Colin O’Brien and students in the Information Technology program. The Corps Network named YouthWork Corps as one of four Projects of the Year and formally recognized Child & Family Services and our own Mimi Kinney, Transition Coordinator, and students last week in Washington D.C. We are so very proud of our staff and students for demonstrating
Excellence
in serving our community. Way to go!
Respectfully,
Nick Ceglarek, Ed.D.

Community Needs Assessment
We are working with the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA to conduct a community needs assessment. We would like your input. To design services focused on the community, the Y would like to hear from the entire region, and we have agreed to distribute this survey to our constituents. Based on this community needs assessment, the Y, in partnership with others, will design and deliver new programs and services that address critical issues in the areas of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

will take you to a short online survey. Survey responses are not individually tracked and are kept confidential. The assessment should take no more than five minutes to complete, and the results will be compiled into an executive summary that will be shared with our organization and others partnering with the Y in this effort.

Project of the Year
YouthWork Conservation Corps Partnership
Child and Family Services' (CFS) YouthWork Conservation Corps is one of four programs nationwide to be awarded the 2020 Project of the Year from The Corps Network in recognition of their unique partnership with Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District (TBAISD). The Corps Network, the national association of Service and Conservation Corps, presents this prestigious award on an annual basis to Corps that have undertaken especially influential or innovative initiatives.
TBAISD transition coordinator Mimi Kinney works closely with CFS, TBAISD, and local district staff to identify students throughout the five-county region who may be eligible to participate in this project. The end goal aims to help young adults with cognitive impairments develop skills for life, social experiences and careers. Learn more:
