There are great things happening in career and technical education, and we invite you to learn more about the extraordinary work of our students and staff!
Greetings from Pat Lamb
During the month of February, the TBAISD Career-Tech Center is excited to celebrate National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month and generate awareness of the benefits career and technical training lends to student learning. CTE prepares secondary students with technical, academic, and employability skills for success in the workplace as well as post-secondary education. Our programs offer clear pathways to industry certifications, post-secondary credentials, certificates, and degrees, and we work collaboratively with local business and industry partners to prepare students to be both college and career ready.

Did you know that CTE students graduate on time from high school at a rate of 93%? Compared to the national average graduation rate of 80%* for all students, it is clear that CTE engages young people in meaningful learning. In addition, over the past thirty years, 91% of high school graduates who also earned 2-3 CTE credits while in high school go on to enroll in college.** Clearly, CTE is shaping the educational landscape in meaningful and beneficial ways for millions of young adults. Please join me in congratulating our TBAISD CTC students on their wise decision during National CTE Month.

Respectfully,
Pat Lamb

Agriscience/Natural Resources State Finalists
"Part of my job is understanding tree growth and having to make decisions about what's going to be best for them in the long term. Knowing when and how to prune young trees ensures that they're going to grow tall, strong and healthy. We planted 40 trees on 40-acres in 2019 and I'm very proud to report that we only lost two of them." Nick has his sight set on studying forestry and forest management.
Two CTC seniors recently received top recognition from the Michigan Future Farmers of America Association for their knowledge and skill in career fields related to agriscience and natural resources.

Nicholas Plamondon , Suttons Bay Virtual High School senior, is gaining experience through an internship with White Oak Timber Frames of Suttons Bay. His learning includes forestry and sustainable building practices while working on a barn restoration in Leelanau County. Through this experience, Nicholas was selected as a finalist of the Michigan Future Farmers of America (FFA) Proficiency Award in Forest Management and Products and earned top honors as the STATE WINNER in his discipline. Nick will be recognized at the Michigan FFA State Convention in March and has his eye on the National FFA stage in June.

Riley Filmore , Mancelona High School senior, is in her second year of work experience at Mancelona Veterinary Clinic and is learning many aspects of animal care. Pigs, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats have all been under Riley's watchful eye, and the extensive learning opportunities have solidified her determination to continue postsecondary education in veterinary studies. Riley was also a state finalist of the Michigan FFA Proficiency Awards and received a gold award for her learning in Veterinary Science.

"I have learned many different aspects related to veterinary medicine, including how to properly restrain a dog for a nail trim, how to roll a vein for a blood draw, and how to wrap "mittens" for declawed cats. I have been able to observe multiple K-9 spays and neuters, as well as growth removals, eye nucleation, and laceration repairs."

MASB Best Program Award
Congratulations to CTC Instructor Colin O'Brien and the Information Technology Program for being selected as one of the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) Best Programs for 2020 !
CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air Force Association to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation's future. In December, two CTC Information Technology teams saw success in the state competition, leading them to compete in the national semifinal rounds in January. A record-setting 6000 teams registered for CyberPatriot XI ; an indication that more youth are showing interest in cyber education and STEM careers.
