Indigeneity
~ Rev. LoraKim Joyner

Every day is Indigenous Peoples' Day. There have been many days when humankind has failed, but that is only a part of what Indigenous Peoples' Day is about. It is also a time to change the narrative from, as Sam describes in The Lord of the Rings, "Stories full of darkness... you didn't want to know the end, because how could they be happy?" There is no time like the present, this day, and every day, to hold onto what is good in this world, by letting go of the burdens of oppression that trap us all. By decolonizing ourselves, we forge bonds of friendship with kind and kin and become an integral part of a great story.

“It's OK!”
~ Rev. Meredith Garmon

It's estimated that the number of people who have ever lived is about 100 billion. Of the approximately 93 percent who are no longer on the planet, the vast majority of them faced problems much worse than yours!

Volunteers Needed

The Hunger and Homelessness team is looking for people to make sandwiches for HOPE soup kitchen. Also, for next week, they need egg salad makers (boiling and peeling 15 dozen eggs, then adding mayo and celery). We provide supplies. Can you help? Contact: Steve Miller (obitsman@gmail.com) or Nicole Turygin (nturygin@gmail.com).
Doggie Play Date Wanted

Do you have a dog that loves to play with children? Omid (9) AND his brother Tawab (7), from one of our refugee families in New Rochelle, would love to spend time with a dog, as they did in Afghanistan. If you would like to offer your dog, a volunteer would be happy to drive the children to you for an outdoor playdate of about 20-30 minutes. Or can you pick the boys up and drive them to Ward Acres Dog Park, New Rochelle, to play with your dog there? Contact Jane Dixon (lilrhodie@gmail.com, 914-370-0760)

The 1619 Project

Save the Date: The 1619 Project - Session 4: "Mass Incarceration," Sun Oct 25, 4:00pm, Rm 7899
The 1619 Project at CUUC resumes with a new discussion based on the essay "Mass Incarceration" by Bryan Stevenson. Read the article and join us! Facilitators: Mary Lane Cobb (marylanecobb@gmail.com) and Jim Cobb (jamescobb450@gmail.com).
From the 1619 Project: Did you Know...

Did you know that by the eve of the Civil War:
  • the Mississippi Valley was home to more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the United States;
  • cotton grown and picked by enslaved workers was the nation’s most valuable export;
  • the combined value of enslaved people exceeded that of all the railroads and factories in the nation; and
  • New Orleans boasted a denser concentration of banking capital than New York City?

Learn more during the Sun Nov 1 worship service, when the Adine Usher and Joe Majsak from the 1619 Project will present special segments “Capitalism” and “Sugar.” Then join us after worship for a 1619 Project Q&A session at 1:30pm.

Reclaim Our Vote empowers community of color voters in 8 target states. They inform, mobilize, and help get voters safely to early voting and polling places so they can elect people who will fight for their interests. Because many of these voters live in rural areas, ROV puts up billboards and helps voters get safe rides - both proven effective strategies. Learn more HERE. Support Reclaim Our Vote HERE.

If you would like to nominate a recipient organization, please submit your application by Mon Oct. 26. Learn more HERE.

Share the Plate for Oct: PrideWorks
This month we share half our non-pledge collection with PrideWorks®, which was first organized to produce an annual conference for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) youth, their allies, and the adults in their lives. PrideWorks' mission is to inform communities about the realities of growing up along a spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities, to inspire respect and support for LGBTQ+ people, and to advocate for positive change.
