District Confirmation Retreat: Are you interested?
The Rev. Phil Richards of the Plattsburgh UMC is interested in putting together a District
Confirmation Retreat in the Spring of 2020, location yet to be determined. This would be a District ministry for youth to explore their faith and find their place in the local church. This retreat would include: History of the UMC, Mission and Service, Worship and Sacrament, Spiritual Journey components and Discipleship Training. This would all be geared to youth Grades 6 through 12.
He would like to recruit leaders who have a passion and gift for connecting with youth. He is looking to see if there is an interest on the District to offer this opportunity. Please get back to him by August 25 if your church has an interest in participating, along with approximately how many youth in your church might come to this event. This would be a great supplement for Confirmation Classes. Please contact Phil at
[email protected] or (518) 563-2992.

New York State employers required to provide
sexual harassment prevention training
New York State employers must provide employees with sexual harassment prevention
training upon hire and on an annual basis. For this year, the training must be completed by all current employees and new hires by Oct. 9. Once the initial training is complete, the employer can decide the timing of the annual training (calendar year, anniversary date, or any other date). Employers are encouraged to track completion of training through attendance sheets or some other manner for audit purposes.
In addition to the sexual harassment prevention training requirement, each employer is required to have a sexual harassment prevention policy in place. This policy should be shared with employees prior to the training. If you have yet to create a sexual harassment prevention policy, Click here
to learn more. This is not optional. Everyone must comply. Please make sure your church SPRC and employees are aware of this.

Caring for people and pets
Nearly seventy percent of U.S. households have at least one pet. Cats and
dogs may grow up alongside our children or become important companions for those who live alone. Churches recognize the bond between people and pets and United Methodists believe in
care for all of God's creatures. Many churches offer annual
blessing of the animals events.
This reflection looks at a few of the ways churches care for people and their pets.

To everything there is a season ....
Time is precious, and required for everything.
Time for
school. Time for
work. Time for
church. Time for bed. We spend time researching exciting ways to spend our time, ways to make the most of our time, even
ways to acquire more time to spend. We want to ensure everything runs smoothly and according to plan-our plan. But God has a time and a purpose for all of life's experiences, and we are called to find comfort in what we have in the present.
You are encouraged to share or download this video to use in Sunday School classes, before or during worship, or with your friends and family.

What is Ordinary Time?
The Christian year includes two central cycles focused on major events in the life of Christ: the Christmas cycle (Advent-Christmas-Epiphany) and Easter cycle (Lent-Easter-Pentecost).
Each of these seasons begins with a time of preparation and anticipation followed by a time of celebration. Ordinary Time follows each cycle.
The word "ordinary" here does not mean "routine" or "not special." Instead, it refers to the "ordinal numbers" (first, second, third, etc.) used to name and count the Sundays (such as the Third Sunday after Epiphany). This term comes from the Latin ordinalis, meaning "numbered" or "ordered," and tempus ordinarium, "measured time."

United Methodist missionaries serve in more than 65 countries around the world, including, clockwise from upper left: the Rev. George Miller, Germany, 2017; Miracle Osman, Philippines, 2018; Emily Everett, Brazil, 2018; and Francine Mpanga Mufuk, Côte d'Ivoire, 2018.
|
How many United Methodist missionaries are there?
"Missionaries serve as agents of God's transformation. They do not go and fix problems on behalf of others - they go to be in ministry with the local community. They go to learn, listen and serve as witnesses of God's transforming grace and power," says Judy Chung, executive director of Missionary Service for the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.

The Book of Resolutions of The United Methodist Church calls us to work for a world free from mass killings.

What can we do in response to mass shootings?
When we hear the tragic news of a shooting, United Methodists mourn with the victims and families of those wounded or killed. We turn to God in prayer, longing for a day when violence will cease.
In addition, many people consider what actions we might take to prevent something similar from happening in the future. So, what can we do?

Finding God's comfort when times are bad
Sometimes, watching or reading the news can be depressing. We attempt to follow the biblical mandate to find and think about whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing, commendable, and worthy of praise (
Philippians 4:8). The stories dominating the media, however, often make us sad, frustrated, or angry. To read more,

Mission Central HUB needs summer assistance!
While summer is a season when natural disasters aren't as widespread as they are in the spring or fall, the sad news is that many people near and far are still in need of help from the past spring flooding and ongoing natural disaster occurrences. This time of year, when donations to the UNY Mission Central HUB are drying up, disaster relief demand hasn't. The UNY Mission Central HUB needs your help. Here's how:

Training Opportunities Sought for Mission Work
If anyone in the Adirondack District is interested in organizing a training class, or in taking a class, please contact Carrie in the District Office (518) 480-4866. This request comes from Mike Block, the Conference Director of Missional Engagement.
As a conference, when compared to some, we are very fortunate when it comes to Natural Disasters occurring within our borders. We cannot say the same for many other conferences as the requests seem to be coming more and more looking for help. While our current ERT (Early Response Team) and VIM (Volunteers in Mission) folks are trained to help, it looks like we will need to add to the list of who is trained and available to help. Over the last 2 years there have been fewer folks from the Upper New York Conference willing and able to help our partner conferences.
We are looking to offer training classes on either ERT (Early Response Team) or TLT (Team Leader Training) within the next 2 to 3 months. The main purpose for being trained is to be ready in case your own district needs help, but to also provide an opportunity for those willing to go outside of the home area and help others.

Cleaning Buckets are needed
Is your congregation interested in assembling UMCOR cleaning kits? Do it the right way by avoiding some of the common mistakes people make when putting the kits together. For example, air fresheners and insect repellents cannot be aerosol.

Intentional Discipleship
The intentional discipleship movement is already happening across the connection. More and more churches and leaders are recognizing that we must have a relentless focus on making and growing disciples, and move away from fixing churches.
Engagement involves initiating and building relationships. Engagement seeks to ensure that outreach and evangelism efforts become a vital part of an intentional system of discipleship.

Oberammergau Passion Play tour planned for 2020
Since 1634, the most famous Passion Play in the world has taken place in Oberammergau. Back in the 1600's, the people of Germany suffered through a terrible plague in which many died. The people prayed and God released them from this plague. The people promised in thanks to God to perform the Passion Play every 10 years on the zero years. This tradition has been maintained for over 380 years and will continue for the 42nd time in 2020. The village of Oberammergau of 5,000 people performs this passion play with more than 2,000 villagers participating. Roughly 500,000 visitors will come to see this play in 2020. Educational Opportunities, which conducts tours to the Holy Land, is offering tours that include this passion play. Rev. David Schlansker is planning to serve as a host on one of these tours. If you or your church is interested in learning more., contact Rev. David Schlansker at 518-227-5535 or [email protected]
He has printed brochures that can be sent to anyone interested. David is willing to visit churches and share more information on this experience of a lifetime.
