2019 Church Conference schedule announced

Click here for the 2019 Church Conference schedule.

Our District Superintendent, the Rev. Debbie Earthrowl, will be presiding at all of the conferences again this year. She is looking forward to spending time with you.

In most cases, Debbie will also be meeting with the SPRC (Staff Parish Relations Committee) immediately following the church conference.
2020 Clergy Compensation Materials

Please be aware that the Benefits Office no longer prints packets for clergy or SPRC chairs. All materials are sent by email to clergy and SPRC chairs and are also available on the conference website. This material will be sent and available in about 3 weeks.

This is another reason for churches to provide the District Office with an accurate Local Church-UNYAC Leadership Interface Form.

Please let the District Office know if you have had a change in SPRC chair within the last year, so that we can update the conference database.
Updated Council on Finance section on the Conference website

Your Conference Council on Finance and Administration (CF&A) has been working
on developing the CF&A section of our Conference website. Some new arrivals on that section of the webpage include handbooks. The topics covered by these various handbooks are:
  • Clergy Tax
  • Finance and Standards
  • Payroll
  • Clergy Compensation
  • Internal Church Audits
  • Ministry Shares
  • Two-part Handbook with multiple resources
You can locate these handbooks on the Conference website ( unyumc.org ), selecting "Finance" under "Resources" and then selecting Conference Council on Finance and Administration (on right-hand sidebar), where the handbooks are located.  CF&A takes all tasks seriously and hopes to be a resource for all. These handbooks are part of that.

Communicating with Millennials

Last year, the youngest of the millennials officially became adults. Next year, the eldest will turn 40.

They are the largest generation in the workforce and are projected to pass boomers in 2019 as the most populous generation in the United States.

The guest on the MyCom podcast is Jeremy Steele. Jeremy is a United Methodist elder, serving as the teaching pastor at Christ United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama. He's the author of a new United Methodist Communications eBook entitled "Reaching and Communicating with Millennials." To listen to the podcast, Click here

The church's respite ministry offers engaging activities, social opportunities, and care for those suffering memory loss from dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or stroke.

Does your church have a ministry with those who have dementia? Let us know!

It's all about forgiveness ...

"Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely idea, until they have something to forgive," C. S. Lewis writes in Mere Christianity. In Christ, we receive forgiveness of our sins. Yet when someone hurts us, we find the process of forgiving others difficult and painful.

"Forgiveness is the means by which we open our hearts and lives to those who might have wronged us or demeaned us and find a way to say, 'You are forgiven,'" retired United Methodist Bishop Melvin Talbert shares.

Why do missionaries wear an anchor cross?

When missionaries are commissioned for service, an anchor cross is placed around their necks, as a symbol of their call to mission service.  It identifies them as United Methodist missionaries and serves as a constant reminder of their covenant.  The anchor cross symbolizes the need for the missionary to be anchored in Christ and in the community they serve, and their call to ministry with all people, wherever there is need.

Exploring our heritage

What we believe

The United Methodist Church is a 12.6-million-strong global church that opens hearts, opens minds and open doors through active engagement with our world.

John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as "practical divinity" has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today.

Click here to learn more about our rich theological heritage.
Who we are

The United Methodist Church was formed when the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged in 1968. But we trace our heritage back to the movement begun in 1729 in England by John and Charles Wesley.

Training Opportunities Sought for Mission Work

If anyone in the Adirondack District is interested in organizing a training class, or in taking a class, please contact Carrie in the District Office (518) 480-4866. This request comes from Mike Block, the Conference Director of Missional Engagement.

As a conference, when compared to some, we are very fortunate when it comes to Natural Disasters occurring within our borders. We cannot say the same for many other conferences as the requests seem to be coming more and more looking for help. While our current ERT (Early Response Team) and VIM (Volunteers in Mission) folks are trained to help, it looks like we will need to add to the list of who is trained and available to help. Over the last 2 years there have been fewer folks from the Upper New York Conference willing and able to help our partner conferences.

We are looking to offer training classes on either ERT (Early Response Team) or TLT (Team Leader Training) within the next 2 to 3 months. The main purpose for being trained is to be ready in case your own district needs help, but to also provide an opportunity for those willing to go outside of the home area and help others.
Cleaning Buckets are needed

The intentional discipleship movement is already happening across the connection. More and more churches and leaders are recognizing that we must have a relentless focus on making and growing disciples, and move away from fixing churches.

New York State employers required to provide
sexual harassment prevention training

New York State employers must provide employees with sexual harassment prevention
training upon hire and on an annual basis. For this year, the training must be completed by all current employees and new hires by Oct. 9. Once the initial training is complete, the employer can decide the timing of the annual training (calendar year, anniversary date, or any other date). Employers are encouraged to track completion of training through attendance sheets or some other manner for audit purposes.

In addition to the sexual harassment prevention training requirement, each employer is required to have a sexual harassment prevention policy in place. This policy should be shared with employees prior to the training. If you have yet to create a sexual harassment prevention policy,   click here to learn more.

Oberammergau Passion Play tour planned for 2020

Since 1634, the most famous Passion Play in the world has taken place in Oberammergau. Back in the 1600's, the people of Germany suffered through a terrible plague in which many died. The people prayed and God released them from this plague. The people promised in thanks to God to perform the Passion Play every 10 years on the zero years. This tradition has been maintained for over 380 years and will continue for the 42nd time in 2020. The village of Oberammergau of 5,000 people performs this passion play with more than 2,000 villagers participating. Roughly 500,000 visitors will come to see this play in 2020. Educational Opportunities, which conducts tours to the Holy Land, is offering tours that include this passion play. Rev. David Schlansker is planning to serve as a host on one of these tours. If you or your church is interested in learning more., contact Rev. David Schlansker at 518-227-5535  or [email protected]
He has printed brochures that can be sent to anyone interested. David is willing to visit churches and share more information on this experience of a lifetime.
