HIGHLIGHTING ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDERS
“Zooming Through Pregnancy and Parenthood”
By: Laura Weill, CNM and colleagues
This APP driven program shows the adaptability of our providers to the new health care landscape of the COVID era, and the innovation of our APP colleagues.

The midwives of UCSF spearheaded a program titled “Zooming Through Pregnancy and Parenthood” to address the changing prenatal landscape of the COVID era. The program is a series of webinars addressing topics that are often covered in traditional childbirth classes and evolved to cover additional topics to make prenatal visits more efficient.
The series is offered free of cost and all sessions were recorded and are accessible on the UCSF Women’s Health Website. The series has reached 1800 viewers in live and recorded sessions. The response from both patients and providers has been overwhelmingly positive.

Awakening the Heart of Humanity

Posted on  June 11, 2020  | by  Doc Childre and shared by Kelly Johnson, CNO BCH

Although the pandemic and global protests have created unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety, an awakening of the heart has also taken place. More people are realizing we cannot return to the old normal, rather we need to co-create something new. There are many levels of awareness and perceptions throughout collective humanity. Our minds may be different based on beliefs, upbringing and life situations, but our hearts can find harmony with each other in a shared existence, if we desire this.
It’s in the heart that we access the core qualities of love, compassion, care, kindness, forgiveness and appreciation that lift us above separation, judgment and blame. More people than ever have been experiencing and expressing an abundance of these enriched heart qualities over the past few months, recognizing that this is who we truly are. Through intentionally demonstrating these heart qualities in our lives, we have a unique opportunity to continue an awakening of our heart’s natural, compassionate care and desire to create the future together in harmony. Yes, it takes a little energy to practice, but not as much as it takes to recoup from the stress and health problems that accrue from not including our heart’s qualities and guidance in our interactions and choices.
Many people are feeling convinced that if we return to the old normal, then life’s stepped-up challenges and restrictions will become the new norm. However, more and more people are inclined to believe it’s highly possible that we can create something new. Increasingly, much of humanity is feeling in their hearts that we need to start treating each other and our Earth with more care, compassion and respect. This could become our newest discovery in energy economy (once understood).
There are enough people awakening to prevent attitudes and perceptions from receding all the way back to where they were before the virus. It’s our individual and collective responsibility to maintain this heart momentum and let it become our baseline for creating and thriving in a world of increased peace, fun and fulfillment. Love can create such things, yet we have to choose it.
Let’s each commit to a practice of replacing standard reactions of judgment, blame and separation with compassion, kindness and cooperation for the good of the whole – and our own peace. Managing our mental and emotional energies, moving with foresight, and putting out more compassion and kindness at this time will help to continue the activation of increased heart energy throughout humanity – a key purpose of the shift that is occurring. Together, let’s seize this obvious, unprecedented opportunity to co-create a new normal – a world in which it’s common sense to be benevolent and cooperate with each other for the highest good of all.

A departure from UCSF Health and the APP Advisory Board
Lissa Gray, NP began her nurse practitioner career at SFGH and was transitioned from a SF County NP to UCSF NP. She began working on the inpatient Hem/BMT service in March, 2001 and has been in CIP at UCSF Health as a research NP in Hematology/Oncology since 2016. She has been the chair of the APP Advisory Board for the past year and has accomplished several things, most notably the creation of Board organizational structure with dedicated Committees that report to the board covering several aspects of APP recognition, education, communication, promotion, and professional development. We wish her well as she departs to private industry engaging in targeted therapies for hematologic malignancies at Oncopeptides, a small pharmaceutical company. Thanks from us all Lissa for your dedication.
Introducing the new Nurse Practitioner 3 Cohort
I want to first thank the APP Advisory Board for their diligence in reviewing and screening the candidates for promotion. Improving the Work Experience at UCSF
Issue 117
To make our True North "Our People" efforts more visible at UCSF, this communication provides a highlight of one enhancement, story or tip intended to improve the work experience for clinicians and faculty at UCSF Health.

Honoring Juneteenth
Today marks the anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States. This date of June 19th, 1865 came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery became official, when the message of freedom finally reached those enslaved in all states. Learn more about  Juneteenth. As hard as our history is to face, it feels that much more important that we understand it in order to dismantle the forces that perpetuate how things are. In our unwavering commitment to "not look away," b elow are several resources and movies streaming for free this month that help us confront how we got here and what is needed to move forward. Thank you to all of you who are critical to this movement as  we continue in our shared work to achieve justice and equity for black people.

James Baldwin delivers his famed 1965 debate speech at Cambridge University’s Union Hall. A writer and playwright, Baldwin is known for his exploration of racial and social issues and especially for his essays on the black experience in America.

A thought-provoking documentary about the 13th amendment. Scholars, activists and politicians analyze the criminalization of African Americans.

1619 represents when the first enslaved people of African descent arrived on the shores of Virginia. "The goal of The 1619 Project is to re-frame American history by considering what it would mean to regard 1619 as our nation’s birth year. Doing so requires us to place the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are as a country."

Selma is a 2014 historical drama film based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches initiated and directed by James Bevel and led by Martin Luther King Jr., Hosea Williams, and John Lewis.

“Our film Just Mercy, based on the life work of civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, is one resource we can humbly offer to those who are interested in learning more about the systemic racism that plagues our society. … To actively be part of the change our country is so desperately seeking, we encourage you to learn more about our past and the countless injustices that have led us to where we are today.”

Book:  How to Be an Antiracist  by Ibram X. Kendi
" An essential book for anyone who wants to go beyond an awareness of racism to the next step of contributing to the formation of a truly just and equitable society."

ALL APP STUDENTS AT UCSF HEALTH FACILITIES
All preceptors are required to ensure all students from ALL educational institutions have been vetted by UCSF prior to any educational activities, including employees. UCSF has many parts of the organization involved in this process. Their school needs an affiliation agreement with UCSF, they need health screening to be completed, they require online training for Health and Safety and APEX, and sign a HIPPA form.

Laura Frahm in INEX is leading the effort to improve the on-boarding of all students and is building a portal that all schools and students must work through.
