A Message from Stuart

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our July 2019 PathStone Messenger.
One of the annual rituals of not-for-profit organizations like PathStone and our subsidiaries is the filing of form 990, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form entitled "Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax." The 990 provides the public with financial and programmatic information about the work of nonprofit organizations. The information provided on form 990 is public information and is available on our corporate website and on the website GuideStar.org .

With the leadership of our audit firm Heveron & Company CPAs , we have just completed our 990s for Fiscal Year 2018. The 2018 reports will be available on our website and on Guidestar soon after August 15.

The impact of our work across the seven states and Puerto Rico in which we operate is summarized by our lines of business in the 990. The results of our hard work, as enumerated on this government form, are impressive. I proudly share a few highlights of the quantified outcomes of our 2018 dynamic partnership with the thousands of individuals and families who experience new opportunities to achieve economic and social self-sufficiency under the leadership and trusted encouragement of our competent and dedicated staff.

  • Community Development: Through our affiliate, PathStone Enterprise Center, we create opportunities for people to live and work in thriving diverse communities from which they can create family assets and access robust community services. The enormous impact our organization has made in the lives of many thousands of individuals and families throughout the last 50 years is a direct result of the enterprising leadership, and determination of our volunteer Board of Directors, our talented and dedicated staff, our visionary funders and gracious donors and community partners. The Welcoming Face of PathStone Online

By now, you have all visited PathStone's corporate website. You haven't?! Tsk tsk! Go now and take a look. We'll wait ... Welcome back!  That lovely smiling face that greeted you on our website is the face of Margaret Rita Rozario, one of our housing community residents.

Margaret keeps photos of her children and grandchildren close by.
Margaret was born and raised in Comilla, Bangladesh. When she and her husband, Eric, immigrated to the United States in 2008, Margaret was a youthful 57 years of age. She and Eric were sponsored for residency by their son, Nelson who is a software engineer in Salt Lake City, Utah.
They also have a daughter, Maureen, who is a teacher in Toronto, Canada.

Margaret and Eric moved from  to Rochester, New York. Sadly, illness befell them both not long after they relocated. In January 2013, Eric died after a 2-year battle with renal cancer. A month later, Margaret was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She sought treatment at the comprehensive breast cancer treatment clinic at University of Rochester's Wilmot Cancer Center. It was there that Margaret met Martha Neubert, wife of PathStone's President/CEO, Stuart J. Mitchell. Martha, at the time, was a social worker for the breast care clinic. She immediately formed a bond with Margaret and became and integral part of her life. She was there to guide and support Margaret through the complex set of challenges that Margaret's diagnosis, her husband's passing, and impending homelessness presented.

In February 2013, Margaret underwent surgery then began a regimen of chemotherapy and radiation.  Martha's support and advocacy was steadfast throughout helping Margaret regain her health and independence and ensuring her basic needs were met. By November 2013, Margaret had recovered from surgery and successfully completed radiation and chemotherapy.  In August 2014, with Martha's help, Margaret made a home  at Pinnacle Apartments. "The Resident Services staff immediately noticed a woman full of energy, life and gracefulness, humbled and happy to have a home," explains Anabelle Del Valle Melo, family services case manager at Pinnacle.  Margaret speaks very little English, knowing some common greetings and basic conversational skills. Despite this, her gentle and warm personality won the hearts of her neighbors who absolutely love her and whom she always greets and asks how they're doing with genuine interest.
Martha takes Margaret shopping at Wegman's.
With help from the  Resident Services staff and Martha, Margaret is able to remain current with her housing and social security benefits, that her medication refills a placed and delivered, and her medical appointments are kept.  Martha stops by regularly to take Margaret food shopping at her favorite stores.

When asked what Martha means to her, Margaret broke down crying. "Martha is a good friend. Martha is an angel to me," she said through her tears. Martha too is crying and the two women look knowingly at each other. In that moment, it became apparent that a love had been forged between them and Margaret knows that her friend and angel will always be there for her.

More Help for Rochester Youth On the Way
On May 8th, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the state was providing $5.5 million in funding through the Workforce Development Demonstration Project for workforce and educational development  programs that provide at-risk youth with alternatives to gang involvement. Assistance will be given to youth who are significantly behind in basic skills.

PathStone was awarded $480,000 to  provide education, occupational skills training, employment services and leadership development to 80 young adults over the two-year grant period. The ultimate goal of the program is to engage the Monroe County and Rochester youth to prevent them from falling prey to gang recruiters or pursuing other negative activities that may result in justice system involvement.

PathStone is in the process of hiring new staff for the program. For more information about the program, contact Emily Sorenson at 585-802-5190.

YouthBuild Ramping Up in Puerto Rico
In January of this year, PathStone was awarded $1.1 million from the U.S. Department of Labor for a  YouthBuild project in Puerto Rico. The project will serve approximately 68 young adults, 18 - 24 years old, who live in condensed areas of poverty and unemployment located in several municipalities in the Northeast region of Puerto Rico. PathStone Puerto Rico will provide these young participants with opportunities to earn their high school diplomas and obtain an industry-recognized certification in the construction industry as well as training in locally in-demand industries beyond the required construction training, such as healthcare, information technology, hospitality and retail services, and logistics.

YouthBuild Puerto Rico will be headquartered at the  site of the former Canta Gallo school in Juncos. On June 27,  Senator Miguel Laureano Correa, representative for the Humacao Senatorial district in Puerto Rico, visited and toured the property and pledged his support of the rehabilitation of the old facility. Members of the PathStone team, led by the Regional Administrator, Blanchet Monagas met with Senator Correa and his Senate office's Director, Elliot Matos to discuss the rehabilitation needs of the school property.  Senator Correa said he will canalize a legislative donation and contribute to the reconstruction with workforce.

CIC Construction Group  will partner with PathStone and contribute to the reconstruction of the school. Vice President of Operations, Michael Pabón and Project Manager, Fernando Cruz discussed the rehabilitation efforts with  Albert Rivera , R egional Administrator of PathStone in Naranjito. "It is an honor to have this company collaborating and committed to this project which will impact the success of these young people who want to contribute to their community," said Rivera.

PathStone Puerto Rico is inviting businesses and other organizations to support YouthBuild Puerto Rico. Those interested in helping can call 787-672-7568.
