I run to the Father...again and again...
Have you ever found yourself with a song stuck in your head? This past week, the following song was playing nonstop in mine: “Run to the Father,” by Matt Maher. One of the things I’ve learned to appreciate as I have gotten older is paying attention to the lyrics of a song. The music itself might sound uplifting, but the words are so very important.

In this particular song, the words are very powerful, especially the refrain which goes like this: I run to the Father, fall into grace. I'm done with the hiding, no reason to wait. My heart needs a surgeon, my soul needs a friend. So I run to the Father, again and again, and again again.

It’s a wonderful reminder of just how much I depend on my Father in heaven to strengthen me in my day-to-day life. These words help recall our need to be near God, who alone can heal us of our infirmities. Not just those stains on our soul, but physical and mental ailments as well.

The words, “My heart needs a surgeon,” describe that well. We need that Great Physician to heal us! To cut right into the dark of the matter (sin), and, like a surgeon, not just stopping at the surface level things (temptation), but going deep to the root of the problem and cutting it out of our lives.

Not only that though, the following line, “my soul needs a friend,” reminds us that our Father desires to do this because He is true to His love for you and me. Many people are unwilling to stay by our side when we need someone to help pull us out from the depths, but always, in our Father, will we find Someone Who will be there for us.

As the song ends, the refrain changes slightly but in a most profound way. Where my heart “needs” a surgeon, and my soul “needs” a friend, now becomes, “My heart found a surgeon, my soul found a friend.”

My dear brothers and sisters, let’s run to the Father, again and again, and again and again. Seek the Sacraments, especially Reconciliation, these free gifts from our Lord, and let Him into your life to heal you.
