Smore Now Available for All Buildings!
Last year the district asked for feedback regarding Smore (e-newsletter distribution tool), and EC and elementary teachers overwhelmingly supported the purchase of a district account. Grade level accounts for each elementary building and EC were created and implemented last fall, and those are still available for use this year. Several secondary teachers have come forward asking for access to Smore. In response we have now added three accounts at RMS (6th, 7th & 8th grades) and three accounts at RHS (1st, 2nd and 3rd floors) to accommodate any secondary teacher who would like to use this e-newsletter service! An account for specials teachers along with extra-curricular activities are available as well.

An introduction email was sent last fall that included helpful information and directions on how to access Smore accounts.  CLICK HERE for that information. A video tutorial is included, but can also be found in Google Drive. Keep in mind, the video and original information was geared toward EC and elementary teachers, but is pertinent for any Smore user.
Lockout vs. Lockdown
To appropriately communicate various situations that could potentially take place  throughout the school year, two specific terms will be utilized: lockout and lockdown. These terms have very different meanings and very different procedures that will take place when implemented. Our goal is to effectively communicate what is taking place in our buildings during these various situations, and we felt these two terms most accurately will help in achieving this goal.

Lockout
A lockout will take place when there is an incident or situation where there is no direct danger or threat perceived toward students, employees, or school facilities. Business as usual will continue to take place within our school building walls. However, students are brought inside from any outdoor activities and
doors are additionally secured.

It is important to note that our buildings operate daily in near-lockout status. Perimeter doors are locked and visitors are screened at the building's entrance.

Example of a lockout situation: A neighboring district is in lockdown. As a precaution we may put our buildings into a lockout due to community unrest until the situation is resolved.

Lockdown
A lockdown will take place when there is a situation or the district has received information regarding a potential threat to students and employees. Internal procedures, which are practiced throughout the year, are implemented. Emergency personnel may be called on site to assist.

Grandparents' Night
We are excited to continue the tradition of welcoming grandparents and grand-friends into our EC and elementary buildings this fall! Below are the dates and times for these come and go events. BOE Meeting Recap
BOE meeting
At the August 23 Board of Education meeting the adoption of the agenda and approval of consent items ( found on BoardDocs) took place after the Pledge of Allegiance. The MSBA monthly report was also viewed, and the Board of Education discussed their plans to attend the MSBA Conference in September.

As per Section 67.100 of Missouri statutes, the board of education is required to hold at least one public rate tax hearing annually before fixing the property taxes for the school district. The hearing must transpire no later than September 1, so this took place during the August BOE meeting. The tax rates for FY 19 were set at $3.3454 (Operating Fund) and $0.94 (Debt Service Fund). This is a voluntary rollback of $.0495 (Operating Fund) and $.8002 (Debt Service Fund).

As the "Student Showcase" portion of the meeting, RHS Senior Mackenzie Tyson presented about her experience this past July in attending Girls State and Girl Nation. She was one of only two girls in the state of Missouri chosen for this accolade. For more, CLICK HERE

Elementary Summer SLAM administrators, Chris Lockmiller and Leanne Gove provided a recap of elementary summer school to the Board of Education.

Dr. Pearce, Assistant Superintendent shared about the district's progress regarding the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP). To see the full document, CLICK HERE

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Chance Wistrom provided a monthly update to the Board regarding facilities, state legislative activity, finance and district highlights. Full administrative reports can be found on  BoardDocs

The only action item on the agenda was the district tuition rate.  As noted in Board Policy JECB, the district does not accept nonresident students. However, there are some exceptions noted in this policy. As such, it is necessary on an annual basis to set the tuition rate for the year in the event that a nonresident student is accepted under provisions defined in the policy. The tuition rate is based on the Weighted Average Daily Attendance (WADA) calculation in the ASBR. The computation for the 2018-2019 tuition rate is $8,647, which was approved by the Board of Education.
The next regular meeting will take place on September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
